Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

I think this only relates the Benelux Heroes, but still encouraging for this week.

Technically, yes, but I think that this, along with the predicted Germany update on the 18th, is a sign that we're very close to this mysterious 'preparatory' update.

We'll see how our European cousins get on over the next 5 days...

will this update fix my constint dropped call issue ive been having since day one? i have terrible service with telus' hspa network and i frequently loose data and cell signal throughout the day regardless of my location.. i have a friend with an iphone on the same network and has had zero problems.. starting to hate this phone.

You should, i do.
convinced telus to scrap my contract and get me an iphone.
Reception on iphone is fantastic, full bars everywhere, including inside. Can't say the same with 3 different htc heros, not to mention many dropped calls.

I am finally seeing the benefit of this new telus network.

We've had to wait the best part seven or eight months to get 2.1 on the Hero and it looks like the Desire might just get FroYo before we finally get updated!...
Just goes to show what a crap job hTC did with the Hero originally and or how they've just decided to say 'screw'em' about those that bought the phone early, before the market was flooded with competition.

I noted this morning at 0830hrs that my hTC was convinced it was 1130hrs on the 7th June 2010; a new tactic by hTC to lenghten June by a week to try and hit their latest due date??

I've said it before and I'll say it again, HTC's biggest mistake was making the decision to bypass two milestone releases (1.6/2.0).

Seriously, I've heard so many excuses, rumours, Chinese whispers that anything could be possible :D

I think it a bit harsh to Blame HTC quite so strongly, they made a mistake with the android licensing on the Hero which is one reason it has taken so long.
i think they should have been more open about the 2.1 Upgrade and then people would not be quite so upset about it.

as long as the do deliver it in the end and it works then fair enought i say, they could have said it's too much work to upgrade the Hero and not done anything about it at all!

also worth remembering that Fragmentation is currently a major Android Issue that google are working on and it's not the Hardware manufactures fault that Google have very quickly brought out newer version of the OS.
Google will after 2.2 slow this to 1 major release per year which will reduce frangmentation and give manufactures more time to adapt custom software to new version before they are released.

also unlike ISheep users we can install custom Version of the OS to get round the problem.

Which is the main problem. Their communication has been pretty poor all-round regarding this issue, further more, when you have excellent tools like Twitter and Facebook to keep people informed they choice to use them for posting numerous announcements about parties and corporate awards.

Then they wonder why people get irate!

They're not a small company running from someone's garage, they've clearly got plenty of PR/Media relation people issuing statements, yet they can't give the occasional status update.

Yer i totally agree they, I just get the sense that some people think HTC are just treating Hero owners badly for no good reason, when i suspect that they are working really hard to get the 2.1 Update working and satisfy the terms of the Android license.

if they would just tell us that I am sure most of us would be a lot happier.

I follow HTC on twitter and all they ever talk about is what awards they have won and what show they are attending next and never answer questions that you ask them :(

very poor.

Well guys, besides the BT stack you don't miss out on anything important.
Pros
It feels maybe a bit smother, has pretty much the same boot time, has a new home screen function where, when you are at home screen and press the home button it now shows all the 7 screens together for you to choose from, and it has some new graphics and wallpapers.
Cons
The camera app is pretty much fracked (crashes all the time), youtube app is changed (no more pan-scan full screen button WTF they removed this?!? there is also an HQ video option but i think video quality was always HQ in the older player), other apps don't work all that well due to the update. It does NOT support live wallpapers, you can download them from market just fine but you CANNOT use them at all :(. Root access is still forbidden (not so much as new but it is a con).

Some minor changes are also in order (usb connection, sounds, profile graphics and others probably)

And that's pretty much it from what I've seen so far.

Mr_Coates,

The firmware is still v1.5 and the build number is 2.73.110.91. No idea if the build number has changed (I assume it has) and what the previous build was.
Incidentally, the new option (System Software Update) seems to be a scheduler for checking for updates. Unfortunately it doesn’t state how often it checks but does have a butting for checking for updates your self. Needles to say I will be pressing this button periodically just in case the scheduler is set to some ridiculously long time interval!

It would be nice to hear if any other UK T-mobile users on this forum have received this update as well
