Switch from iPhone to Incredible?

I'm currently an iPhone user, and I have been thinking about switching to the HTC Incredible for about a month now. The iPhone 4 really didn't impress me too much, and my contract with AT&T is up within a few months. So I figured now would be a good to switch phones (and carriers).

My question to the forums is, has anyone here switched from the iPhone to the Incredible? Have you regretted the switch? I have played around with the Incredible at my local Verizon store. Since I'm so familiar with the iPhone OS, it would take a little getting used to the Android software, but it's not something that would hold me back from purchasing the phone.

I am familiar with Verizon's network since I owned a BB Curve before I switched over to AT&T to purchase the iPhone.

I didn't see any topics similar to this here, but I apologize if there are numerous threads that I might have missed in relation to this thread.

I'd say half my friends have had an iphone (many have switch to Android in the past 6 months) and I have played with it a lot over the past few years and I found it very boring and bland like it was designed for a small child or a senior citizen. I felt very confined and limited with it. Not so with Android. Hell even Windows Mobile 6 and 6.5 gave me more options and freedom.

If you enjoy tech stuff, Android is amazing and fun with unlimited possibilities. If you are not a tech person and like a highly controlled dummy proof experience then the iPhone might be better for you.

And be hard to get an honest answer in this forum because if you say any thing negative about the incredible or remotely positive for the iphone you will be bashed and ridiculed because you have a different opinion about something. If would like to know what my experience was with the incredible for 3 weeks before returning it, send me a private message here and be happy to share.

Again, not saying it was bad phone in the least or the Android market is bad, but it wasn't for me. As why I still check forums, Im getting ready to sell some of my accessories from the incredible so seeing if worth while, and also was curious to see any reactions about engadgets report on the screen coming apart.

It all depends on what you expect from your phone. Iphone is very appealing if you are looking for something that is a "no brainer.. even your grandma could use it".. type device. Droid has a few things which to me are huge selling points..

1. Seamless integration with Google services.. including their spectacular (and free) google navigation.. which will definitely sweep you off your feet.. get it pin point your location and search for a home depot or grocery store nearby.. and presto!.. it not only tells you the nearby search result but with a few simple clicks, you can get it to navigate you there.

2. Very fast processor.. everything is lightening fast...

3. Verizon network. I got 3G connection all the way from southern california to northern california when I was driving. Fast network with Verizon makes for a very satisfactory user experience since most of the phone's ability is tied to the network connection. Very fast searches, very fast gps link ups.. etc..with the help of a fast processor.. all make for a very good experience.

Some things about the Dinc which may not be very appealing..

1. Battery life: HTC dropped the ball on this one. If you are in an unknown town and use gps navigation and searches etc.. it will barely last you half a day. Sure you can use extended batteries.. but the current options are not very appealing (god awful 2150mah!)

2. App Market: a third of Iphone.. but still very satisfactory to me.

3. Android , especially with HTC sense is nice.. but I wouldn't call it the most intuitive (as the iphone). I love the way it works though.. but if you are a grandma.. you are better with an iphone probably.

4. Display: The OLED display is gorgeous.. that is.. if you are not outside on broad daylight... The display is good even inside cars in the afternoon.. but in sunlight it's pretty bad.

I personally haven't switched, but one of my coworkers (die hard Apple fan - I mean die hard lol) switched from his iPhone to the Incredible. He loves it, he said it was fast, multitasking was great

I'm in the process of checking out the Incredible, have an iPhone 3GS. The Inc is fast and Android is very customizable. If you're looking for ease of use, then stick with the iPhone, but if you like to tinker and customize your phone, I would say go with the Inc.

If you were unimpressed with the iphone 4, you may just want to wait for a while. The iphone 4 is not "magical" or "revolutionary", but it is an impressive device.

Quick answer:
Android is suited for gadget people.

Iphone is for everyone else.

I look at it like this. The iPhone OS is like WinXP, good OS, stable and safe. Android is like Win7. Good OS but with all the bells and whistles.

Great first post!!! Welcome to our forum! I want to apologize for the rudeness of some here. That is NO WAY reflects the true camaraderie we have her in our forum, nor does it reflect how we treat new people. Personally, I would like to encourage your post and I will probably have that rude post deleted.

One thing I would like to chime in on, regarding your post is what is for me the most important factor in choosing a phone. The service. Plainly put? VZW is the best when it comes to data and call coverage. I never have to worry that a business call of mine will be dropped. I never say, "can you hear me now?"

Having said that? I LOVE my Incredible. It is true to its name. I hope you make the right choice for you. Again, Welcome!!!!

I owned an iPhone up until a month ago and I was the person that thought it was the best thing ever. I got my Incredible about 2 weeks ago and seriously regretted it at first and considered returning it. I'm very glad that I didn't. You can do much more with the Incredible and Verizons service is so much better.

I'm telling you, you will love the Incredible, it just does more.

The ONLY thing I do not like is the fact that the Incredible feels lightweight and cheap to me compared to the iPhone, the iPhone is just very solid but I would rather have my Inc.

Friend's Mom, which is a grandma, not only figured out tethering on android, but also how to install and use skype.

I'd say your take is an exception, not the rule. I'm really sick of the "simplicity" aspect of the iphone that fanbois tout. It's so simple that it becomes mundane and outdated.

I went from an iphone to a few winmo phones, and they functioned much better. I finally got a Moto Droid and it brought the whole user experience to a NEW LEVEL.

I didn't like the MD bulk, so I bought a DI, and WOW, it elevated to another level!

Iphone, even the 4, will be playing catch up for years! You even get the SAME interface from years ago in the apple corner. It'll be nice when they actually do something innovative, or something new that they don't steal or buy. Haven't seen any of that from apple in years!

I switched from the iPhone 3G to the incredible. Here's what you'll miss:

- The app store. The android market is nice, but don't expect every app to be there. Also, the Android versions aren't as good as the iPhone ones. (Example - Facebook and eBay)
- Cut, Copy, Paste. Android's isn't as good as iPhone's and doesn't work everywhere. (Example - you can't copy from the Mail app)
- iTunes Syncing.
- As other's have said, this screen is terrible in the sunlight
- Accessories. The iPhone has tons of cases, car mounts, docks, ect. The Incredible has some, but not the same selection as iPhone
- Updates. When Apple puts out an update, you get it right away. Android updates go to different phones at different times. For example, the Nexus One has Android 2.2 and you will be buying an Incredible with 2.1

Here's what you'll love:

- Having service. I had no signal on my iPhone about 1/3 of the time. I'm loving Verizon
- Widgets are nice. There is everything from Toggles to calendar to weather ect..
- Speed. this phone is FAST!
- Camera quality is great.
- Sense UI ties everything together nicely
- Google services. Contacts, Gmail, Maps & Navigation are great.
- The option to tether. It can be done through Verizon or buy buying an app in the market.

Other Thoughts:
- Some people, including myself, experience random reboots. Mine happens once ever 2-3 days... I have no idea what causes it.
- The stock battery didn't cut it for me. Sedio makes a great extended battery. It took almost 2 weeks for my battery to "break in". My battery lasts all day now. (56% after 14 hours, light use, was in class most of the day)

I'll be honest, it took some for me to get used to this phone. If I had the option of iPhone 4 on Verizon or the Incredible, I'd stick with the incredible.

I switched from having a line of iPhones.. 3G and then the 3GS. I do not miss them. The iPhone does have some pretty cool games that played well on the 3GS. I, however, would rather have a phone that I can customize and have more control over. I found the iPhone lacking in what you can do with it. Even with jailbreak, it still seemed not as customizable.. The only thing I miss from my 3GS is Bejeweled. ha

I'm a software QA working with a bunch of SW engineering living in a open source environment. Most of us had iPhones. They were the best option in smart phones before Android. They still are great for those who are somewhat tech challenged, but for those with some tech abilities, Android is both an open platform and a more robust platform.

When Apple brought out their new developers agreement a few months back, the engineers I work with started switching. After the first two, the rest of us took a good look and agreed. It's just more robust AND it's open source.

I switched three weeks ago. Much much MUCH better service. I went from two to three dropped calls a day to never. I actually have reliable service at home in San Francisco.

The only thing I miss is the ability to use both voice and data simultaneously. Hopefully as Vzn moves to 4G they'll enable that.

My brother just purchased the HTC Evo, and I played around with it today, and although it's a bit big for my taste, I loved the UI of of the phone, and I know the Incredible has that very same UI. But I am very much leaning towards the Incredible, but I know before I make a final decision, I will try out in person the iPhone 4.

The Incredible, as you probably know, is a little smaller than the EVO, so you should'nt have a problem wiht the size. It's actually pretty similarly sized to the iPhone.

If you want to order your phone through Verizon, I woudl suggest ordering now. It won't arrive until mid-July if you order through Verizon due to high demand and a shortage of Samsung AMOLED displays. You can still purchase your phone from Best Buys, if any near you have them in stock, and sometimes Verizon kiosks at the mall have them. Otherwise, you're in for a long wait.

Some people have no problem buying through Best Buy - that's what I woudl have done, but I upgraded early (11 months into my contract ) and couldn't get it from them. Some prefer to order through VZW. Just a heads up. Nothing wrong with BB; if you decide to get the Incredible, my advice is to call the ones near you, and if they have one in stock, ask them to reserve it for you and run down to the store!

Ex iPhone 3G (jailbroken) owner here as well. I haven't looked back. I did keep my iphone though, but it's just an iTouch now I guess. The Incredible, is well, Incredible. i love it.

I recently switched from iPhone to the HTC Incredible (I refuse to add the "droid" marketing buzzword to the phone name), and although I was disappointed at first at how convoluted Android can be at times, it's growing on me quickly. I consider myself a gadget kind of guy, but my phone has always been something that I counted on to just work... I never really wanted to tinker with it too much. With Android, be prepared to tinker.

I also still don't like that there is nothing even in the same ballpark as iTunes to manage your multimedia. As a mac user this is especially glaring because your phone will just show up as an external drive, and it will take several Android apps working together to get your music, videos, pictures and audiobooks synced up. I know someone will respond with the obligatory "Doubletwist does everything iTunes does", but it doesn't... not even close.

Anyway, don't know if this helps you with your decision, but overall I'm much happier with my move than I was a week ago, and I can tell I'll be even happier with it next week than I am now. For call quality alone, I say to go ahead and dump AT&T and make the move to Verizon. Good luck!

I just switched from my 3G to the Incredible, mostly because I wasn't happy with ATT, and partly because the Incredible is just so sexy. Haven't looked back since. I'm a geek anyway, so switching to Android wasn't a big deal at all, but I find Android with Sense UI to be quite intuitive.

The only bad part of the phone is the stock battery, which to be fair has been quite a bit better lately, and I've had the phone about 3 weeks.

P.S. The browser, among many other things, is light years ahead of similar features on the iPhone 3G/3GS.

I dumped my iPhone 3G for the Incredible about 5 weeks ago and haven't looked back since. VZW's data network performance in the Tampa, FL area is far superior to what I had been suffering under AT&T, many times I would test the AT&T data network and get results in the 50-100 kbps range in both direction, simply pathetic!

Add to that the fact that I had grown tired of Apple's walled garden with the iPhone OS and the switch to Android has been a VERY positive experience for me. I actually bought TWO Incredibles, one for me and one for my wife who had been using a dumbphone for years, and haven't experienced any buyer's remorse at ALL.

As a former I-phone user I will agree with pretty much everything here. I will also add that you will miss I-tunes. There is no replacement (IMO) and unless google develops something we will have to get used to eat.

The battery IMO is much worse. You can get a replacement battery but again that is a little bit of a pain in the ass IMO.

Google Voice is pretty damn cool.

I do like the customization but in reality it's not THAT big of a deal.

Incredible is Just as fast, most likely faster but not that noticeable.

Agree with someone else that it is not as durable. I went forever with the I-phone naked and dropped it several times and nothing went wrong. Incredible I would no way take that chance.

Dumped my 3Gs back in December, and got my introduction to Android with the HTC Eris. Loved the Eris, but the screen was too small for me. So, when the Incredible came out, I got one.

I could not be happier. Reliable phone calls on Verizon, Average 2.5 mbps 3g download speeds, and the ability to customize the OS to my heart's content.

I still like the iPhone, and the upcoming 4th gen. iPhone looks very nice....but I could never to back to AT&T's pitiful coverage and overloaded network, or Apple's iron fisted grip on the OS.

I switched from the Iphone to Verizon a year ago because of TOO MANY DROPPED CALLS. Since i use my cell about 3-4k minutes/month for work this was clearly unacceptable. I originally got the ERIS, which made me hate android. Ultimately i rejoined AT&T to keep using my Iphone on a month to month basis for all the stuff that was great about it for me (games, some apps not on android, integration with itunes etc.)

Then i got the incredible and replaced my eris when Apple announced the new phone but not going to Verizon....i threw my iphone in the trash...the hardware improvement with android was a game changer for me. I really like this phone a lot....plus the verizon call quality is simply amazing PARTICULARLY INSIDE BUILDINGS.

That being said, iphone goes to verizon, i am getting one (assuming they produce one that can change batteries).
