Root 2.1 out of the box, hboot 1.49 and root question

I got my eris 2 weeks ago so 2.1, and it has hboot 1.49 (can someone tell me wht that is/means?) was already on it. I've found out that the hboot is why I can't root. Has anyone came up w/ a workaround yet?

I only want to root to be able to use the Eris as a hot spot for my itouch, so if there is another way to do that, I'm all ears!!

What does this mean?
I did try search, but thanks for pointing out that thread.

So, my out of the box 2.1 is the same as the phones that got 2.1 OTA, right?

Yes and NO.

It has the same OS on it as the OTA-2.1 ... but a different bootloader (1.49 S-ON)... the one that prevents rooting with the currently known method. Older phones that only received OTA updates still have 1.46 or 1.47 bootloaders on them; and then if the owner ROOTs the phone, that process installs a 1.49 S-OFF bootloader.

So, you have the most up-to-date software from HTC/VZW, and your phone will get further updates if there are any more of them.

But no, you can not root with currently known methods if your phone has the 1.49 S-ON bootloader on it.

Any news on the work around yet? i saw they got an (i believe) incredible or 2 rooted using a race, and i know that its only been a few days but i dont want to be stuck with OTA 2.1

And, Stupid question i know but, So if my 2.1 with 1.49 is not OTA-2.1 does that mean that they sent me a phone in a new box, that was referbed because people tried rooting with the v3 leak and it suddenly got the "sound death bug"? Or, is the new 1.49s-on bootloader in fact what they intended on releasing?

Stop asking this question. If and when it happens, there will be a Sticky post at the top of this forum, in a giant 55-point font, which will shout out "LEAKERS REJOICE!" You will know if and when it happens. In the meantime, chill out, or start trying to root the phone yourself.

If you have software on your phone which came from HTC/VZW, and your Software number (Settings -> About phone -> Software Information -> Software number) is 2.36.605.1, then what you have is identical to OTA 2.1.

Really, who knows what HTC/VZW are thinking? Unless they issue a press release, it's all speculation. There have been a number of people who have speculated - after observing that HTC/VZW have never changed the Eris' bootloader during an OTA, that they did this to avoid the hazard of bricking customer devices. For new phones or refurbed phones, that's not a hazard, since there is no customer issue with a phone in the factory or refurb site. So, yeah, they probably would like everybody to have 1.49.0000 S-ON, but they didn't want to take the risk of installing it as part of an OTA procedure.

That and upgrading the bootloader wipes the phone, so all those "average" Eris users out there that had 1.5, who have no clue what root, HBOOT, or just about anything else we discuss on these forums would have had their phones completely wiped without knowing it. Instead, the OTA was done so that everything remained as it was, just the OS was upgraded.

I rooted my replacement phone which came with a 1.49 hboot in five minutes using this thread at xda [WORKING] ROOT for all Eris' - xda-developers

I already knew the lingo from rooting my old phone though... anyway, it's even easier (less steps) than the old method. I'm not sure if all 1.49 hboots are S-ON or not. Maybe mine was not, which is why I had such an easy time...

But you violated the first rule of Android Forums. call newbies losers and expand your superior intellect umbrella to shade you from the God of the Techno Sun.

??? ???

I don't see where Dana used any such language or made any such implication. The way I read her post (today and back in July when she posted it) was to refer folks to wag3slav3's excellent new root method and thread over on XDA.

If I have mis-read or mis-understood your post, I apologize.

Scary, I was in-artfully praising while taking a shot at "the experts". Sorry to be unclear.

No worries... Didn't know if there was some other stuff going on that I couldn't figure-out...the time gaps between recent posts in the thread just made me think that Dana was being singled-out (she seems nice enough to me :)).

Appreciate your response re. this.
