The day had finally come...

Thanks again. I have had a "little" play with it (her in doors has put her foot down. She says I pay more attention to gadgets than her...lol).

I feel like a caveman with a laptop on my knees...just don't know what to do with the bloody thing. I have come from a Nokia E71 (which I thought was a smart phone until I started with the desire). So I will take it very slowly and make mistakes, then come on here and beg for help ;)

Don't rush into installing loads of crap apps.

Stick with the google goodies (maps, navigate, goggles, voice search, etc.).

The default HTC apps are perfectly good enough for most, and generally better than a lot of stuff out there in the market.

You should maybe get 3GWatchdog if you're worried about going over your data allowance.

It's Google that makes the phone great IMO. Sure there are loads of "cool" apps like Swype and 3DGallery, but do you really need them?!!

In my very humble opinion, you would need some amount of 3rd-party software to make the experience good. The stock apps are okay, but it's far from a complete PIM suite.

If you are a total newbie to smart phones in general and Android in particular, I can understand the desire to "go slow". There certainly is a huge amount of crappy and ephemeral apps that you can do without.

But having said that, you would definitely benefit from a minimum of 3rd-party apps to improve the basic capabilities, such as backup management and profile management.

:) Personally, I just find it reassuring to know that Toggle Settings automatically puts my phone into silent mode every monday through friday from 9am to 5pm, and that Titanium Backup keeps an updated backup of all my apps and settings.

Definitely. I dont use titanium back up, but I have my own back up proceedures in place anyway.

You definitely need some apps on there. Unless you install and uninstall apps, you really wont know what you want or need.

Things do become apparenty though, as time goes on.

Some of my favourites (excluding games):

Astro (great file manger - a must)
Barcode Scanner (good for downloading apps from your pc screen (androidzoom.com)
Cab4me (find local cab company wherever you are, and call directly from app)
ExUninstall (good if you can uninstall things from market)
Hullomail (visual voicemail - still in beta testing)
Orb Live (new one for me - stream audio and video from my home network)
Shake 'n' not stirred (alarm clock where you shake to snooze)
Shh! auto Silencer (scheduled silent mode)
System Panel (monitor resources, match app cpu usage with battery drain)
Tunewiki (wikid audio player)
WaveSecure (lock, track, wipe phone remotely if stolen - back up etc)
