I've been using Sprint for almost two months now. Had a hero and now have an evo. Okay I've noticed that sometimes there is a delay in receiving a text message. Doesnt happen all the time but enough to be annoying.

I am a heavy texter. Im currently Texting ten people now. Sometimes the delays in text are like minute or two long and then sometimes I will be Texting A bunch of people and then there will literally be a half hour delay and sprint is too dumb to know why.

Does it happen to any users.

Also are you guys having mms issues as well. For some reason I can't send mms all the time. They will just keep trying to send but I can always receive a mms. I just took some pictures just now and trying to send them to my friend. Maybe its cuz he has Verizon :-(

Sent from Carmen's HTC Evo

yeah I had that problem on my Pre also. There was a point to where the texts were 5+ hours later. I was driving with a friend of mine and she suddenly turns to me and said "hey I just got a text from you" and I had sent that one about 8hrs previously...almost missed a show because of delayed texts...no bueno

yeah its near instant most of the time and then sometimes its like 5 mins to like an hour or two(the worse i;ve seen with sprint in the past 2 months)

I wonder does it have anything to do with the amount of text i send and receive....

I also send alot of pictures out with mms.

All in all, i send like 2-3,000 out(double what i did on my hero due to lag) so i wonder is it having a hard time keeping up

This has been an ongoing issue with Sprint for a many many years now. It has occurred with all Sprint phones I've never had. It was royally pissing me off and that is why I wound up leaving Sprint for my 1 year AT&T experiment.

I tried to do some digging into it a few years ago and had a very difficult time finding anything except sporadic complaints by other Sprint users. As I recall, the only answer I could find at the time was someone talking about how it was a fundamental infrastructure issue with how Sprint/Nextel implemented SMS.

Go Google "Sprint SMS Delay" and you'll see what I mean. Years of complaining on numerous platforms, but next to no answers.

So unless something has changed in more recent years, we're just stuck with it.

Wow you text 10 people at the same time? You got skills lol. Anyway, I understand what you're saying. It only happened once to me. I get a text message a half hour late. Maybe it was the area...who knows. It's been smooth sailing since then though.

I haven't had an issue yet. It can happen on other carriers. I just came over from ATT, and I had lags of DAYS with texts and voicemails. It wasn't all the time, but it was sporadically frequent enough that both my wife and I noticed it. Caused me a lot of issues when I showed up late at a train station, but the good news is she was in the car with me two days later when the text finally came in so the doghouse turned immediately into a "You're right, we have to switch carriers" that got us to the Evos and Sprint now. I see the screen issue as HTC's problem though - not Sprint.

Even if the customer service and network speed are pushes compared to ATT, we got 2 Evos, insurance, 3000 shared mins, unlimited data on 3G & 4G, and way better network availability for far less $. Was never able to keep a call with my wife on NJ Transit but now I can, and that's worth gold.

lol i just got what u said :)

But yeah i mean it doesnt happen a lot. Its usually random when it does.

I use Handcent but I like chomp.

The thing i hate about chomp is the fact that the pics are in slideshow and it won't allow me to view.

so i close chomp and go into stock.

I would use stock app for sms but it won't allow me to send more then a 160 characters and it doesn't have that blacklist feature i like.

overall i do love sprint tho

It doesn't happen too often to me but it did happen with all of the phones that I had with Sprint: Evo, Tour, Pre & 8830. Usually it happens when I am texting someone with Verizon... not sure why...

Ditto. My GF is on Verizon and either hers are delayed to me, or mine are delayed to her. I think it's Verizon. I had T-mo before and the same thing happened.

I use to hate Sprint back in the day when they had the old logo lol. I vowed to never go back. And I've kept that promise for over 7 years until......well the EVO lol.

I've had the same problem. I think it is just poor coverage signal from Sprint. Which you end up with no signal in some places, and you don't get your messages when you should.
I use to have an Instinct. I know I know..its a piece. lol But I noticed I'd get my messages always with only two bars of signal. With my evo I need at least three...which I don't get from my room. I get three bars everywhere in my house but my room. Of course...lol
In a way it is the Evo, and Sprints fault. Evo has trouble picking up signal, and Sprint, well....it's Sprint. They wont do anything. Lol So keep an eye out and watch your bars to see if you have the same problem as me. Oh and by the way, I always get my messages when I'm outside with signal. When I go into my house (in the city lol) my signal gets worse. So yeah, Evo and Sprint's fault.

since getting the evo i have had a lot of issues i did not have with the diamond. I get a bunch of sms message was not able to be sent and i have to resend. Even though it says this sometimes it is sent, got that message five times in a row the other day so i kept resending the messages and my sister said i was sending everything twice. Also have had network busy come up while trying to make a call about 4 times since i got the evo, never had that happen before in about 6 years that i have been with sprint. So not sure if it is the radio in the evo or a problem with sprint.

Well its good to know i am not only one that was having this issue.

Perhaps, Iowas right in another post that maybe i was blaming Sprint when it could possibly be an HTC thing.

Your issues sound pretty similar to mine.

I can deal with the SMS being late(to a certain extent) but its really annoying when it said it would send but it never made it to their phone.

Lol the delay reminds me of texting a nextel or boost phone...Idk why but nextel/boost phones take FOREVER to send and receive a text

also with the mms problems you have been having, make sure you are not trying to send 8mp pictures, those will always take forever or never go through. This happened all the time with the diamond and that was only a 3mp camera, i just took pictures at a lower res if i was going to send it to someone and never had a problem.

well as of now i no longer have sprint anymore
but i took 8 megapixl pictures all the time and i was able to send them.

I had heard that a lot of people were downgrading the quality of the pics to send via mms
but i take a whole lot of pix(lol took like 30 today)
on my new cell, my droid and they sent fine...no more longer than usual.

But i will say when i upload the pix to facebook they are HUGE

This happens across all carriers.

SMS is sent through the control channel. This is responsible for making your phone ring, location/signal strength, etc. When the network gets congested, SMS have the lowest priority and therefore get delayed. Hence the delay in the SMS.

This can and does happen on the receiving and sending end of the messages in question. So if your sending multiple messages, and some people receive them right away, and others don't, the people that experience the delay are usually the ones being delayed(their specific network/tower is congested, causing the delay), and the sender is fine(no delay). Making SMS, Phone calls, etc work is a very complicated process, and they need to work flawlessly in tandem for anything to be even close to real-time, and, during congestion, Phone calls take top priority, followed by data. SMS is pretty much dead last on the list. So they will be and are the first to receive any kind of delay/degrading of service, and the last to regain top notch service.

This is exactly why text messaging should never be used for real time communication. I believe there should be a push towards data based text messaging(like gTalk) for more reliability, speed, and convenience(no pesky 160 char limit).

Also, when cross sending from GSM/CDMA carriers back and forth, there is an additional delay, although mostly minimal, because it needs to go through a gateway that acts as a "translator" of sorts, since the SMS technologies between the two are generally completely incompatible.
