Help Google Talk/AIM

So maybe I'm misunderstanding how things work here but how do I setup Google Talk to work with my AIM account? I'm a Mac user so as far as I can tell there's no Mac-based Google Talk app and there doesn't seem to be anything within the Droid that allows you to add accounts?

iChat works with google talk, you just add a new account and change the account type to "google talk".

I don't use AIM but if you sign into gmail on your computer and click the options button at the bottom of "chat" you have an option to sign into AIM.

Ahh, so maybe my understanding of Google Talk is incorrect.

I assumed it was kind of its own IM engine with the ability to connect AIM, MSN, etc etc in one tool. And that with the Droid I would be able to use Google Talk as my AIM client.

From your post it sounds like its an independent IM client that can use AIM within Gmail, but not within the Droid?

Google talk is google's own chat implementation based on the jabber/xmpp protocol but they give you the option in gmail to sign into aim. Since I don't use aim I'm not sure if enabling it in gmail enables it anywhere else.

There are third party AIM clients in the marketplace that you can download though. Meebo seems to be a popular one...

It does not.

One thing to remember, if you're new to Google/Android. They have separate teams for every version of a product.

The Gmail PC/Mac/Web Browser is one team.
The Gmail Mobile Web Browser is another team.
The Gmail Android App is another team as well.

The upside is that with different teams these different versions can exist,and can employ specialists who can refine and innovate their particular version. The downside is that a feature that exists in one version (AIM in gmail's GTalk) does not exist in others (the Gtalk Android App). However, don't be too discouraged, features do cross over. When android first came out last year the gmail app did NOT have multiple select for deleting/archiving/marking emails even though the mobile web and regular web versions had it. With cupcake they added that feature just a few months ago. So the features you want in one version can, and often do, cross over. Just takes time and it also takes feedback to Google so they know what people want.

Thanks for the help guys, I just went ahead with Meebo but hopefully as you say it can be implemented in the future. I'm new to Android/Google apps so I've still got a lot of issues I'm working thru (ical, address book sync) Thanks for the help!

im really hoping they incorporate aim into google talk on droid. I use gmail for gtalk and aim I hate having to have hi aim installed since it isnt as smart as gtalk and it always turns itself off!

You can use a transport protocol like jaim.at to link your aim contacts to your gtalk account. I noticed gtalk was always running in the background anyways, so why not use it?

Implementation is easy enough, and you can just follow the directions on that site. You only need to set it up once, and then continue to use the talk app from hereon out.

Wish I could help you out, but I just went to the site and it's only showing a graph. Also something you should note: your credentials are saved to an external server, so be sure you feel safe with that.

I stopped using it long ago because I never felt 100% safe with that idea. Plus, I stopped talking to the one contact I had on Yahoo! Messenger (it also works with other protocols).

Edit: You can also try something like PSI. It does the same thing, but can link up to other servers. You only need to run it once (from your desktop), and you can uninstall it after if you like. Google "transport protocol" and "psi" for more info.
