Is the Droid still worth getting?

So I just canceled my contract with Sprint because of lousy coverage and am returning the EVO today. I'm now looking to get into a one year contract with Verizon and get the Droid.

But I was looking at the specs, and it seems about half as good as many other Android phones on the market (none of which belong to carriers that have coverage here, or have questionable build qualities).

So, is the Droid still worth owning for another year, or is it an outdated product and I should wait for something better?

To give you an idea of what I'd expect from my phone, these are the apps that I was using on my Evo:

I'm not interested in gaming on a phone, aside from the occasional SNES game. The most demanding thing the phone will have to do is probably using Google Nav and Last.FM at the same time.

Edit: On second though, the most demanding app I'd run would be Google Earth. Anyone wana talk about how it runs on the droid?

In my honest opinion ... with the official release of 2.2 Froyo being just weeks away, the Moto DROID is still the coolest/best phone to get.

Yep, froyo is the reason i'm still considering the Droid, what with it's JIT compiler and other optimizations. Also I really like the way the Droid feels when using it, I'm just worried about buying outdated tech.

Go out and buy the latest and greatest phone that is coming out next month, wait six months and it will be outdated...... but to answer your original question, IMHO, yes the Droid is still worth it. If you root and overclock, and mod it, it will run everything close to as fast as the new coming out.

If you're interested in rooting and roms definitely get the droid. If you just want a phone you can use, I would wait for droid 2. They will both have 2.2 eventually, and droid 2 will expectedly have a better processor

Alright, one more question. Does Motorola/Verizon cripple updates?

It seems that 2.1 on the Droid is much different than the real 2.1 (as seen on the N1). For example the Droid kept it's 3 desktops and kept the old the old app drawer, while the default 2.1 has 5 desktops and has a new app button.

I'm assuming the differences are superficial and were only made so users didn't freak out when their phone looks different after an update.

I still love my Droid! And if your worried about VZW taking away anything from it, u can always root. And BTW, I'm hitting faster speeds on quadrant with my Droid than any other phone out right now.

Unless I was going to root it, or I wanted a physical keyboard, I would not get a Droid. That being said, once rooted the Droid is still the best phone Verizon has and possibly the best Android phone out right now.

If you can wait for the new Motorola phones I would do so as they look pretty nice. The Droid X (Coming out July 19) compares well to the EVO other than no forward facing camera. The Droid 2 should be very similar to the Droid except better in every way but that will be coming out some time after the Droid X - no release date for it yet.

from what I see with updates is they are pretty standard.

now if you are looking at the DInc then thats different. Dinc has HTC sense so that takes a long time to update. hell eris just got 2.1 about a month ago.

when the moto droid gets 2.2 it will be the same as it is on the N1, I think

I've learned from past experience that you never HAVE to have the biggest and baddest, plus a Droid can be had for as little as $20 right now. I just want google NAV, and to run the SNES/NES/GAMEBOY emulators. Any prob with any of these apps on Droid?

Droid runs these things fine and is probably the best for emulators because of the physical keyboard, especially if you get a Home (game-gripper)

Amazon or Walmart.com have em for 19.99 with a new 2 yr. I'm just worried about buying it from Walmart, such as if the warranty still goes through Verizon or if i have to go through walmart to get it fixed. Any input on that?

I agree with nstallion: a rooted Droid is a beast to be reckoned with. But there are better phones than a stock Droid. I can't wait for our illustrious devs to cook up some ROMs built from Froyo source - THAT, is going to be ridiculous.

The new issue of PC World ranks the Droid as Verizon's number 2 phone, right behind the Incredible. That should speak VOLUMES for a phone that's over 8 months old, which is forever in the phone world.

With each update and ROM, it's like a brand new phone over and over again... it keeps re-inventing itself! The Droid truly is a one-of-a-kind device, and there is nothing on the horizon that would impel me to even consider trading it in.

Just want to reaffirm what everyone else said. Unrooted, the Droid is nothing special and is bested by the EVO and Incredible (except for the physical keyboard, which is completely necessary in my opinion). But rooted, the Droid blows away these phones in every way except the camera and the EVO's larger screen.

Also... I just realized that the EVO has a 2.5mm headphone jack. Why!? Every Android phone and its mother has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack and they made the biggest Android phone on the market have a smaller headphone jack.

Just wait for July and they will introduce the Droid2 and Droidx...even then I'm sure they'll be handing out the Droid1 like candy. With the recent specs saying the Droid2 actually is 1ghz I think it's worth waiting for plus the 8gb internal space helps with apps(I've run into storage issues with mine due to measly space on the D1).

Better yet try out the Droid now..and return it within the 30 day limit and trade up. That's what a TON of people do.

Yeah, I'd say get the droid. Root then woot! And thought they say the HTC Inc is pretty great, already folks are glad that the Droid2 (or is it Droid X) is NOT getting the snapdragon.

On a side note, hey chief, how's it? I see you found another home. Not only that, you fell off the wagon and rooted and everything!
