Help You cant install non-market apps?

Not really a big deal IMO. I know a lot of people like to bitch about it, but realistically why not just submit your app to the Market? I'd imagine that there definitely are situations where that's not optimal, but for the majority of users I don't think it's a big deal.

All the same the phone will likely be rooted at some point giving you access to non-market apps.

Not really a big deal, BUT, installing already downloaded .apk's can save a ton of time (for instance, after a wipe/re-install/update, etc). I like to keep all my programs' installers archived for quick re-installation.

Seriously AT&T really is beyond stupid sometimes...thought they learned a little bit of lesson with the backflop fiasco...now releasing this baby phone and still no sideloading... Sorry AT&T I really dont want to be babied, if I buy a phone I want it to be my phone, not a loaner from you.

Noob question here, how do you get your installed apps to save their .apk's (presumably to flash)? I'm assuming there's an app for that. I'm looking for a recommendation.

sheeeesh do a little research... there is already a work around, takes about 5 min and allows you to install non market apps. I tried it out and works like a charm. Honestly if you cant do that you shouldn't be installing non market apps anyways.

I was able load the Swype Installer without an issue using adb, however, when Swype attempted to install I got the error message saying:

Install Blocked
For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not sourced in Android Market.

Any ideas?

It sounds like from adb you're using "adb push <swype installer.apk>", which will merely copy it to the SD card. You want to use "adb install <swype installer.apk>".

I used adb install from the command prompt. The program had no issue loading onto the phone. It was when I attempted to run the program from the phone. Its the Swype Beta. I'm asked to input my registered username and password and then it begins downloading. At the point, I received the error.

Weird, guess the swype installer you got just downloads a new version. I wonder if you can get your hands on a newer version, or if someone here who's installed swype can point you in the right direction.

I'm thinking the same thing. The version is installed is for the Beta. I must need a currently running version to install correctly.

this is my first time posting. so bear with me.. i have an inspire i have been trying to root it. not having any luck found a one click link to a inspire root apk it said download to computer move to the phone then install. i did that and it went on the phone fine but when i tried to install thru astro it said for security the phone wont install non market apps... how do i get around this.

All of these companies take their lessons from Microsoft and Apple.
They will make you pay for the hardware or software but they control it.

I feel for you that your needs are more than most but I understand your wanting the phone to be restriction free. After all you paid good money for it.

I upgraded my phone (HTC Aria) to Android 2.2 (Froyo), and then didn't have the ability to sideload, which made my backups pointless. I noticed in lots of forums that AT&T could send you a push and that would then give you that option of: Unkown sources - allow installation of non-market applications. However after nearly an hour and 4 different AT&T techs telling me that this wasn't possible, I finally found one that actually listened and was able to get it done. So, if you're having trouble with the techies, this is what I was told she did to get this corrected....

Ask them (AT&T tech support) to log into the XDM system, and under connection settings, they'll be able to find "HTC - allow unknown sources - true." Then they send that push to your phone. You restart your device, and voila.
