Please help... do I have a dud?

I want to start by saying that i'm a complete android fanboy... at this point would never get a bb or iphone... and as my first smartphone i've been really impressed by everything the evo can do (i can control the torrents on my computer with my phone? it's the future!)

I'm worried my phone is a dud or something though because I've been having problems.

First is battery life, I've been searching to forums and trying every trick everyone recommends but nothing seems to help. I've done a battery pull twice, i tried the extra charge battery trick, i tried turning off the GSM searching thing, changed the wifi sleep policy to never, turned off data roaming, i've cut back on most syncing services, live wallpapers are off, have been monitoring my running services to make sure there are no rogue application, i keep 4g and gps off when not in use and nothing seems to help!

I've noticed it's getting extremely hot when just sitting in my pocket when not in use so something must be going on... i don't have a flickr account set up i know that was a problem for some people, i even uninstalled the nytimes app and astrid to do list because i noticed they were showing up under running services...

I know I shouldn't have to completely cripple this phone just to get 8 hours of battery life (right now i'm averaging 5)! I get that it's not going to last forever and that if I'm using it a lot the battery is going to drain... but for instance yesterday the battery was a little less than half full... i sat down and watched a movie for 2 1/2 hours and did not touch my phone and when i pulled it back out it was flashing and had 10% left.

Other random problems
- the glass is moving and there is light leakage
- the phone keeps resetting itself randomly... it completely reset three times today while just sitting on my desk and not being touched
- the 'people' app has force closed like 5 times when i was just clicking the widget to text a friend.

The one thing I haven't tried is a factory reset. I am avoiding it because I would rather not lose all of my settings and texts and junk but I guess that's the next step.

Anyone have any ideas of what I'm doing wrong? Maybe the phone or battery is just bad? At this point I'm thinking about returning it before my 30 days is up so I can get a Droid X or Samsung Galaxy S. I really do like my evo and would love to keep it if I can just get it to actually work!

Thanks in advance for all of your constructive advice :)

I have not had any of these issues at all since I got my phone on June 4th. I do have a tiny bit of light leakage along the bottom but only noticeable in almost total darkness and it does not bother me one bit. Yes the battery time could be better but its not awful. My phone has been great! Back your handset up and do a master reset, it could only help you.

Just do the hard reset. I did it after a few days with mine and my battery life tripled. Also worth noting I did the hard reset after my phone randomly reboot 4 times in a period of 20 minutes. My last 5 phones have all been HTC and for some reason it seems I always have to do a hard reset when I first get the device. No idea why. As far as the glass moving and light leakage it sounds like you might have one of the ones with the screen separation issue. Do a search for that and you will find others with this issue. If that is what is happening definitely exchange your device.
