got it today from amazon! already did the ota update and am loving it. i have noticed that it is a bit slow and laggy but i might root it later tonight to help the speed and battery out. any other ideas to speed it up a bit? all help would be appreciated because i'm a total android noob!

Can you still root after doing the OTA update? I thought the newest OTA update closed the rooting ability.

It basically gives you admin access to the phone (and the ability to screw a lot of stuff up). Yes, technically it voids your warranty.

That being said, rooting isn't a bad thing. Just be sure to read everything before you do it and triple check to make sure you are doing things made for our phone (not the GSM hero).

what does rooting do? does it change the images and layout of your phone? when you do that does it ruin the phones warranty?

It doesn't actually change the layouts and whatnot, it just gives you the ability to do so, among other things. To change your layout you need to install a custom rom such as Fresh. That link i posted will give you the full scoop on how to do it, and then search for how to install custom rom's after rooting.
