Wifi tethering and such

simple explanation......

tethering: hooking your computer to your phone via usb and using the phones internet connection on the computer (anyone can do this using pdanet)

wifi tethering: your phone becomes a wireless hotspot.... you can wirelessly connect to the internet through your phone with multiple computers (you cant do this unless youre rooted)

So can VZW detect that your using wifi tethering? Does it use DATA?

Yes, definitely uses data.

I've seen opinions posted both ways regarding whether they can tell (and care). Many say that they can only detect your high data usage (and who cares since you are paying for unlimited anyway?). I've yet to see anything stamped official from VZW saying you can't / shouldn't (but hey, did everyone read the fine print that came with their phones...I didn't :), so maybe it says in there...).

Its funny that I was "dissuaded" from using a video camera viewing application for home security monitoring when I purchased my phone ("that's not really a good idea"..."too much data..."...blah-blah-blah). I do use it though :D.

Well im okay... as far a data goes. I used only 300mb last month, and I don't wifi tether much. I was getting my car fixed today, and I looked at my DATA before that, so we'll see how much data was used in that 30 min i was sitting.

I researched it after I posted it and EVERYONE has a different opinion. I'm sure if someone gets caught, we'll hear about it on this site

I do have another question. What are the workings of wifi tethering? To be more specific, what are we doing while rooting that is allowing us to wifi tether? I guess the reason why I'm asking is, A.) Friend of mine is using a blackburry curve and says he can do it just by downloading an app, b.) isn't froyo standard with it? That would mean they could do it without root...

Yeah, wi-fi will be available/standard with FroYo IF your carrier allows it to be. Wi-fi needs access to system-level calls/routines (radio/network, etc.) that are locked-down / restricted unless you have root (keys-to-the-kingdom) access.
