*sigh* (looking around) uh, you're not supposed but people do it--I used to but I had a situation that I won't detail here happen that keeps from being distracted by my phone. Prior to getting my EVO I had a Blackberry 8330 that installed an email reader on so I could listen to it. Good luck if you're doing it but it is dangerous...

....dude... I hope you get a ticket.

Tapatalk. Samsung Moment. Yep.

Unfortunately it's not illegal everywhere, yet.

I tried it once or twice but it was to tough to pay attention to the road and drive so I gave up. I wouldnt suggest doing it.

I would think this could easily fall under the "wreckless driving" category.

I text a lot while driving.... no different than messing with your radio, or your GPS. hell back in the early 1900's, there was a push to ban another item that was being blamed for causing distractions to drivers, and thus causing wrecks..... WINDSHIELD WIPERS

windshield wiper history ban - Google Search

so until you're ready to give up your radio, a/c and heater controls, cruise control and everything else that can distract drivers, STFU about me and texting/surfing the net on my phone.... so get off your politically correct moral highhorse

So your seriously suggesting an interactive activity that both mentally and visually distracts you for 10-30+ seconds at a time is comparable to switching a radio, or ac/heat, which in most cases can be done without looking or any kind of mental distraction? I guess hitting the window switch or turn signal is the same to as texting + driving too.

People like this need their drivers licenses stripped permanently.

You see IOWA, you are failing to realize that the poster's texts are of the utmost importance, and are directly related to saving people's lives...those acts clearly outweigh any life which may be taken in the process.

As an avid cyclist, who was hit by a car while track standing at a stop light , there are enough poor drivers on the road who's skills are exponentially diminished by simply talking on a phone, let alone browsing the web or texting.

The radio is not nearly as interactive as the internet, climate controls are just knobs (or switches), and I don't have cruise control on my car. But I'm sure its not distracting either. I do a lot of dumb things, but texting/web browsing while driving isn't one of them. Because that's just STUPID. The most I ever interact with my phone while driving is hitting next for the next song, or the dialing pad for making a call.

Flawed arguement is flawed.

10-30 seconds????!?!?!!? wow, I'm not staring at porn here, I'm glancing/reading, then responding

Perfect driving record
no tickets of anykind anytime
no wrecks

I stare longer at my droid programming my music than I do for texts.... and I can text with both hands on the wheel.

It's only when I drink, drive, and read android forums do things get tricky....

(I kid, I kid) lol

I think you highly underestimate the distraction.

Even 2 - 3 seconds is enough to make a difference between avoiding an accident and a fatal crash.

2-3 seconds is what it takes to change a CD

if you want to ban texting, then also ban other things that distract you for 2-3 seconds at a time.... changing CD's - banned
messing with GPS - banned
eating
drinking (non-alcohol)
kissing

Hell, I'll venture to say driving with KIDS is more distracting than my cell phone.... I say ban all kids from cars.....

or

you let freedom of choice that we have in America play out....

you choose your dumb things to do, don't get upset at the dumb things I choose to do...

Your still comparing apples to oranges here, chief.

No matter what you say, what your doing is unethical, and generally illegal no matter how you try to slice.

Yeah, we all do dumb things, but my dumb things don't involve putting other people's lives/property at risk, or even death.

Your wrong. Plain and simple. Chief.

Oh, and my driving record? 100% clean. Even tickets that have been written,(most from teen years due to profiling and police harrassment) have not stuck.

Try again. Not to mention I've logged more road hours/miles than most people on this forum. 95% id say. Now that's sayin something. (Cab driving to work my way through the end of college, and before that, delivery)

All that in the hustle & bustle of Chicago streets, which are amongst the hardest to drive in around the united stated. Definitely in the top ten hardest list.

Try again.

And enragement, na, just stating facts here, pal. although your the type of person I'll intentionally brake check just to give a good scare.

until you can prove to me my 2-3 seconds of distractions on texts are any MORE dangerous than your 2-3 second distractions like changing a CD out for example.....

go preach your sliding scale of ethics somewhere else.....

well, it wasn't exactly directed at you, but definately didn't exclude you, that's for sure.... But in case you are confused as to who I was speaking, please refer back to who I quoted when I made that statement....

still, unless you have LESS tickets/wrecks than me, your advice matters not to me.... it's like telling Jesus the best way to save souls.... I think he's got it figured out, he doesn't need your help.

so, tickets are cleared up, what about wrecks? ANY wrecks, your fault or not, cuz I'm clear on that too.... 100% and yes, wrecks caused by other people also count because believe it or not, if you defensive drive, you can avoid those wrecks, even if that means you have to stop when you have the right of way, etc.

again... hate my driving habits all you want, but very few can argue better results

Wait, what? Your argument is because you haven't had an accident yet, it must be fine for you to text and drive?

I've been driving 2 years now, not long but I've not had any tickets or any other motoring offences.

Just because you only look at your phone for 2 or 3 seconds at a time, it's still dangerous. Like you said, other things take 2 or 3 seconds, but it's only once. When you text, you're looking at your phone, quickly glancing up, and back to the phone, multiple times, unless you need to do something more complex like turn a corner. And you still need time to focus on the phone and resume the word you were typing/sentence you were reading.

Like IOWA said, it's wrong, no way round that.

I also glance at my rearview mirrors constantly, and focus on it, then have to refocus to the road in front of me....

I didn't say it was OK for everyone, I said it was ok for me. Listen, if you don't think you can handle it while driving, DON'T.... I think it's more dangerous for an 18 y.o. to drive than a 35 y.o. driving and texting personally, but you don't see me waging a campaign to take your license away now do you?
