Root Which ROM is right for me?

Please forgive me if this has been answered but a search for "which rom" and other simple combos returned no results...

I am considering rOOt'ing my Eris (or Droid - havent decided between the two yet) and I am wondering which ROM is right for me. I'm a relative noob to this, though not to technology in general. I have read that some ROMs have issue with GPS or Facebook or WiFI etc. I need some specific items to work:

Regular phone functions
GPS/Navigation
WiFi
Email
Text Msg
and if possible Facebook/Twitter

Beyond these requirements everything else is vanilla. Is there a ROM you would recommend?

Thanks!

PS - entirely possible I am using the term ROM in the wrong context! lol... I just mean the software package like Evil Eris or Sense-able. Etc...

As far as I know, Ivan's does all of this. When you are done flashing, you will wonder if you have 2.1 OTA - it looks just the same. However, there are no issues with it (that I have discovered), it is faster, it doesn't load a bunch of the bundled apps in the background, and it seems to have better battery life. I'd try that first.

+1 to doogald -- I've had zero problems w/Ivan's Eris Official 1.0 w/OC (very close to stock 2.1 but supersized with root :D).

Read-up on the list of ROMs available here on AF:

or here for a starting point for various ROMs:

Known Droid Eris Roms, Patches and Hacks - UPDATED 05-11-2010 - xda-developers

You'll also find whole threads listed on the xda site (Droid Eris Android Development - xda-developers) that I think the prior link should point to.

Good luck and happy ROM hunting! :)

What would be the best rom to use if I want to use Launcher Pro... it wouldn't make sense to have a sense (no pun intended) based rom, because then its just running in the background. I just want to use LP and optimize my battery use

Right now I'm using xtr and that already has sense removed for the launcher. Or you can install any of the other ROMS and delete "Rosie.apk".

You might get crashes when you delete Rosie, so you have to also get rid of "HTC Widget Download Manager(process com.htc.RosieUtility)".

Instructions on how to do that are found here: http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/90874-how-remove-senseui-enable-jit.html

You can also use Root Explorer to erase them in \system\app

+1. I installed XTR last night and I'm running it with LauncherPro. I'll give it a few days, but I may stay with this one full-time. Ivan's finally gave me the Eris 2.1 reminder bug yesterday (for me what happens is two things - first, some reminders fire well after the start of the event; second, it fires a reminder, but there is nothing in the notification bar and it keeps repeating every 5 minutes, as if you keep snoozing it. This was the the thing that pushed me over the edge to root in the first place.)

I have also run Senseless and I really like that one as well - it's stock 2.1 Android, with stock messaging, dialer, contacts, etc. But I think that it's still missing a few things - MMS, GPS location. I haven't run it since last week.

[ROM]-[5/25/2010] CyanogenERIS v1.1 + Senseless[JIT/Overclock/Vanilla!!!] - xda-developers (note: I am talking about Senseless 1.0, not CyanogenEris, which I have not tried.)
