Root SPRecovery vs. Clockwork ***Poll Added***

Why are we all moving into clockwork territoryaway from SPR? (besides ROM manager, i mean). Of course, they're recovery images. No reason to have a bias towards either one; they both do what they're supposed to do, and they're both doing it well. I've slowly seen all the devs go from SPRecovery to clockwork, to the point where the new BB doesn't have an SPR version. What's the reasoning behind it, or is it just the ROM manager support? I don't like the pricetag on rom manager, and I never will. I support my devs directly and I know for a fact that I am supporting as much as I can, but this is an open source community. Shouldn't pricing (or lack thereof) be treated as such? Now that everything is clockwork, I can't just use my knowledge to download anything and update.zip that shit into my phone. I need to pay someone 5 bucks to simplify the process? Not cool. Why did the open source community stray away from non-profit? I'll buy you a beer or two or thirteen if I think you deserve it. I'll be the first one to donate. But forcing payment seems very un-android.

Crucify me if I'm getting things wrong, please. I hope I'm just being dumb and over looking something, but I don't think so. comments?

edit: i was so wrong for everyone reading this thread late. clockwork just makes things easier, i'm also on the rom manager bandwagon now too. stay gold pony boy(s).

Personally i was using SPrecovery then flashed the clockwork to use the rom manager for the download updates etc... But either way you don't need to use it and download and continue to use sprecovery to install. I guess i don't see the big deal. People that want to shorten the steps will pay the 3.99 for it which is cheaper or the same price of a beer in many places.

And yes, I've tried CW. I just don't like it. Because I'm allowed to not like it.

SPRecovery always works, I've never even flashed Clockwork, all the options seems convenient, but there is so much more room for error.

How hard is it to rename a file to update.zip anyway?

I recently started using CWM in conjunction with ROMManager. The thing i DON'T like about it , is sometimes when you try using install from SD Card and you reboot and do the process...nothing ends up happening...

SPRecovery can be a bit tedious having to rename each ROM to update.zip, and flash install but i m already used to that. BUT, im willing to give CWM a try, its just i used CWM when going from V0.1 - V0.2 and thats when i started having the reboot issue...maybe its not CWM maybe it is...bottom line is when i used SPRecovery it didn't do that when switching rom...anywhoo my 2 cents.

Also to the OP, don't look at it as taking away choice. Sure, its great to have this many custom options and whatnot, BUT, remember, sometimes you have to cut some corners in order for devs to be able to develop in a timely manner as these 2.2 Froyo custom rom updates are coming...and fast! So, on one hand i understand you, but on the other hand you gotta understand Pete/Fab, sticking to just one makes things easier on them thats all, no political , pigeon holing reason as to take away choice, just makes it easier on them i believe...again, just another theory

I'm going to express an opposing view here, although I think everyone is entitled to their choice. I LOVE ClockworkMod and it has absolutely nothing to do with ROM Manager. In fact, I never use ROM Manager to install anything. Rather, I download the ROM I'm going to use from the OP of the dev on the forums, the theme and a selection of kernels to try (because my phone is very picky about kernels and the same kernels don't always work with each ROM) -- none of these through ROM manager, but always from the forums. I name them descriptively so I know exactly what they are, then I store them in folders on my SD card to keep them organized and easy to find.

Then I reboot into Clockwork recovery, make a backup, wipe all my partitions (data, cache, system and boot) in the partitions menu, then go to "install zip from SD card" and "choose zip from SD card" and navigate to the correct folder and select the ROM (which I don't have to rename) and install it. Then I do the same thing to install the theme, then the kernel and I then hit reboot (I can do all of this in one reboot cycle). If the kernel puts me in a boot loop, I just pull the battery or use Pete's reboot recovery keys to go back into recovery and choose another kernel from my folder, again without having to rename.

This just totally works for me and it doesn't require ROM Manager premium.

I relate CWM closely with Rom managaer; I didn't think people used CWM without rom manager. i suppose the thread title should be "why i hate the idea of rom manager premium"

I believe you still have to hold "x" when it reboots itself to access the menu right for CWM right? or does it automatically i don't remember right now

I did not have a problem in spending the money for ROM manager premium mainly to support Koush who is constantly putting stuff out there for free. But like they say, to each his own.

No question here for me. Clockwork Recovery is superior.

1. You dont have to rename to update.zip its a convenience thing and I am lazy
If I want to install a rom and a kernel I can without having to reboot into recovery a second time or mounting my sd card.
2. Ability to format /system and /boot without using adb.
Its just a lot easier to be sure that you are starting with a clean slate
3. Clockwork has the ability to toggle on or off whether zips need to be signed.
I make changes to roms a lot of the time before I install them saves me time not having to worry about resigning them
4. Rom Manager is a GUI for clockwork. Despite that fact that most in this thread seem to hate it Rom manager is nice and easy to use. I can download and install a rom while at a stop light in the car if I want. Not something you could not easily do with SPR and browsing forums.
Rom Manager also makes it easy to rename, and delete backups. For those complaining about the price the free version is very functional and $3.99 or whatever it costs is not much. If no one purchases stuff from devs then how long before they move onto something else.

5. Clockwork has actual support from the dev. If you have a problem koush will help you out and update the recovery. When was the last update to SPR?


For those saying they hate when it doesnt boot into recovery. Thats cause of a screwup during the flashing process. If you flash either an old CW or SPR then flash back to CW it will work. I have the same problem when I flash SPR i can no boot into recovery most times.

I totally agree with this OMJ. I also paid for ROM Manager premium because I wanted to support the dev and I use it all the time for things like fix permissions, flashing recoveries and managing and restoring backups (I like the option to name my backups before I make them, so I use that function constantly). I wasn't intending to say that I don't like or support ROM Manager; I was merely stating that the reasons I love ClockworkMod are independent of ROM Manager.

oh yea thought of another thing. Most people use clockwork so its more widely supported. There are a lot of zips that are made for phones like the nexus one that work in clockwork and dont work for SPR. The superuser 2.1 zip is a good example of this.

i resisted CW for quite a while, but the update.zip thing is what finally converted me. i flash so many different ROMs and so many different kernels, the organisational logistics using SPR just got out of hand. i don't have to worry about that anymore with CW since i can keep everything in directories with appropriately named .zip files.

that being said, the one thing that still irritates me about CW is how long backups take to do. i think that was supposed to be fixed in the recent release (no progress bar mode), but i don't know how to do it.

In ROM Manager, hit Menu, then Settings and check the item at the bottom (Quick Backup and Restore).

This this and THIS! I too resisted CW because it was different and I was used so SP. But when I started flashing kernels, basebands and roms I just couldn't keep up with the naming to update.zip. I have changed my kernels and basebands several times a day to get the right combo for my phone/location. Unfortunately while SP served me as a Root n00b CW is just much more advanced. Also with CW you do not need to keep everything on the root, you can install roms/kernels/basebands from any folder on your sdcard which help with organizing everything.

I don't think Rom Manager has anything to do with CW really, there is no reason why you NEED to pay for RomManager. I have been using the free version for months without any limitation. I like pulling my roms off of forums and reading what other people have to say about it, not just randomly selecting a rom in rom manager.

I will say that SP seems to have a better backup system as sometimes when I restore from CW not everything comes back correctly (swype).
