how do you make a speed dial

Yeah, you can Press and hold on an open space in your Home Screen, Add a Shortcut, and like it to a Contact. That's about it.

It boggles my mind what is left out of this thing and how much they depend on third parties for features that are pretty standard on other phones.

I hope Apple doesn't get that Mac guy and PC guy to point this stuff out.

OTOH and sure is addicting.

How does adding a contact to your home screen constitute as "depending on third parties for feature?" Not saying I disagree with you, but the lack of a "speed dial" feature is not exactly an example of this since I'm pretty sure "speed dial" has been obsolete for years and I think the OP didn't seem grasp the concept of contacts. The functionality the OP was looking for is built in to the phone.

im gonna chime in because i'd like to see this as well.

speed dials have generally been holding down one of the number keys on the dialpad and having that directly dial a number. most of the time, the 1 key is set for dialing your voicemail (and it is on the droid). sometimes, holding the 9 key dials straight in to 911- sometimes it doesnt, just depends on what phone you're using.

so... why the hell cant we at least use the 2-8 keys to set up some speed dials? my only complaint with the droid so far.

I'm all for short cuts on the desktop. I didn't think of the folder idea, but did use one of my home screens as a special purpose speed dial.

Favorites seems to work OK, too.

I was a little bummed about no speeddials until I found that I could place an icon right on the desktop. 1 click - that's it. No need to enter the phone app or anything, tap the icon and the phone's ringing.

I totally agree on a true speed dial. the favs and the other options are great to be part of an advanced device but a simple seed dial on the keypad is a key 'phone' feature.
This things is really failing me as a great phone and contact manager. lots of missing key basics.
It plays a bunch of crappy games great and has overall a very nice UI and a quality build.... but.....I use over 3k minutes a month on a cell phone. speed dial is important.

want to really speed up your speed dial for voice mail its much safer if you are driving and checking without BT enter this for the phone number in a contact called voice mail and shortcut it to the homepage. *86,,xxxx,,1 where xxxx is your mailbox pin number it will call, enter your pin and select 1 for messages all with the right delays to hear number of messages enjoy.

Dude, how is it speedier to click the phone icon, then click and hold a number (or click a number and click send) versus simply clicking a single icon on the home screen and being connected???

Plus that icon is named, so you don't have to remember number associations, and there is no limit to the number of speed dials if you use a folder (which, of course would increase your number of clicks to 2)

If you're really hung up on apparent lack of speed dial (I say apparent because it's not really lacking, it's just not implemented in the traditional sense, since this isn't a traditional phone), then you're really just adverse to change.

Does this work, or are you suggesting they SHOULD make this function work?

I think it would be hilarious if they did make a commercial in that Android and Mac OS's are both Linux/Unix based. Ain't no PC involved.

I have the Q1 blueant bluetooth headset. I cannot setup speed dial on numbers 2-8 because the droid doesnt have that capability. But I enjoy my Q1 because it informs me of what caller is calling me without looking at my phone and it has the speed dial commands, but I cannot use that function. So I would love to be able to assign speed dial by the numbers so I can use that command.

The main problem w/home screen shortcuts, unless someone knows a trick I don't, is that if you change your home screen you lose all the shortcuts you've setup. Pretty frustrating...I've been playing w/a number of homescreens, and have gotten tired of setting up shortcuts only to lose them if I move on.

Once I've settled (assuming that will happen) I may create some more shortcuts.

In the meantime, Easy Dialer is a nice compromise...allows you to set up large, single-tap speed dial buttons, including multiple pages of them if you like.

That combined with SuperDial (T9 dialer that automatically searches/narrows down contact list as you type on the phone number/letter buttons) make the Droid about as easy use in most ways than my BB was...and more flexible overall...I do like the option to create my own experience on the Droid, rather than having to accept what is provided.
