Soft keys - are they supposed to light up?

I'm on my 3rd Eris - replaced each one for the silent bug. This one hasn't gone silent yet, but the soft keys (home, menu, back, and search) don't light up. Major PITA when using the phone at night. When I took it back to Verizon, they said the buttons aren't supposed to light up. Now I'm second guessing myself. So, can someone with an Eris check it out on your phone and see if the buttons light up? Is there a setting for this that I'm missing? Thanks.

BTW - This last replacement shipped with 2.1 installed and hboot 1.49.

The soft keys are definitely supposed to light up. Mine light up about 2 seconds after the phone wakes up, anytime except when the phone is in very bright light (sunlight or a very well-lit room). You should also ask for a statement credit for your trouble, since Verizon lied to you and made you drive to the store an extra time.

PS - I think it's likely that this particular store's Droid Eris floor model has broken soft key backlights as well, hence they don't believe it's an included feature. Have them open a new one to prove it.

yes, they light up... sometimes at what seem to be random intervals. For instance, when the phone is about to shut the screen off for being idle for 1 minute, the soft keys light up when the screen first dims.

I'd actually rather have them not light up... I know which key does what even in the dark

this was a huge thing for me with 2.1... in 1.5 the soft lights used to pop on as soon as coming out of sleep. now they lag quite a bit, idk if its another one of 2.1 "power improvements" lol but i hate it. doesnt matter now that im rooted tho lol
This just sounds like you think because you rooted you are better than those that haven't.

Unless of course you can explain why rooting makes a difference if/when the soft keys light up, then I may retract my comment.

lol and this just sounds like to me you're a little jealous. Either way I could care a less. haha. When did I ever say that rooting makes a difference if/when the soft keys light up. i said there was a difference between 1.5 and 2.1 soft keys lighting up. if people weren't hating I'd be doing something wrong. hater.

You actually didn't, but it was implied. And if that's not what you meant, why even make the comment about being rooted if it has no bearing on the thread issue?

lol because the point of posting is giving information about my experience. I had nooo idea someone such as yourself would take it as though I think I'm better than anyone. haha is all I have to say. I don't think I am any better than anyone. I have soo much to learn and I love learning new things about my phone everyday, if that entails beings rooted, sorry, I'm not going to pretend like I'm not because people get defensive. I'm not going to say I'm sorry because I think it's quite childish. And I'll leave it at that and so should you.

On the other hand, Yes some ROMs soft keys don't light up but very few, maybe only one actually, one of the versions of Fresh, and I think one of the versions of Evil Eris, but I may be wrong about EE.
The rest of the ROMs I personally havn't had a problem with the soft keys lighting up.

Thanks for the explanation on the ROMs.
