Droid Vs Droid Eris

Your best bet is to go to the store and play around with both of them. I personally have the Droid and like it alot better than the Eris. For me it was a no brainer to go to the 2.0 android!

I agree with the personal thing.

For me, the big screen and Android 2.0 couldn't overcome the blocky feel and kludgy keyboard of the droid. ;)

Yes, but I really wanted the Droid, then i heard about the Eris and the Sense UI, and it's Android 2.0 update coming soon. Wouldn't that mean, if i got the Eris and then the update is released, I would get the free navigator and most of the newer stuff for free, without paying $200 for a phone that has it all now? I would just be missing out on the 16 gigs and physical keyboard right?

I love the Droid and never thought I would need the physical QWERTY but after a couple of days getting used to it, I'll never go back to touch screen only keyboards.

My advice, play around with both, see what you like, and remember that you have 30 days to return the phone if it does not work out for you.

Ok, thank you everyone, but you can still give suggestions.

So, are you saying that the Eris is better? I don't understand what you said when you wrote the screen and Android 2.0 couldn't overcome the blocky feel and kludgy keyboard of the droid.

I am saying that I preferred the Eris (hence I bought one). I would have liked the bigger screen of the Droid, and the Android 2.0. However the phone felt blocky and uncomfortable. The slide-out keypad felt rickety when sliding and to actually use the keyboard, well, I didn't like it for several reasons.

So those negatives outweighed the slight edge in display and Android.

YOU need to go play with the phones and decide for yourself. No one can make the decision for you. The phones are too close for that.

I tried both the Motorola and the HTC. I bought the HTC. Eris in my personal experience was a far superior device than the motorola. It was responsive, functional, and well tuned. I give it as a iPhone like experience. If I were Verizon I would have pushed Eris much more than Motorola and it would be my pick for an iPhone contender.

The motorola to me was flimsy, slow, choppy, and unimpressive compared to the Eris. I spent around 5 minutes with the motorola droid and about 1 minutes with Eris.

If I were you try both and I would guess you would go with the Eris. It's an exceptional phone. HTC did a VERY good job on Sense UI and upgrading the hardware to match the experience.

After about 1 day of use I've fell completely in love with my phone. No regrets over bypassing the Motorola. I mean, I downloaded the NAV4ALL app and I get free turn by turn NAV. So it's no big deal. Although HTC is planning on releasing Android 2.0 for the Eris once they've tuned it perfectly so it will have google nav eventually.

The Eris was much better in my opinion. Much smoother, has more features - minus the 2.0. That Sense UI allows you to do the pinch zoom and stuff like that - its sweet. The Droid seemed clunky and it was slow. I did a speed test in the store for downloading and the Eris was about 30% faster ironically.

After buying it I think its almost the perfect phone. I love it - the track ball is great too for navigating the fine line. I love copy and paste... freaking sweet. And the phone is sleak.

The only thing I could say that the phone had wrong is the battery life is horrible. I unplugged my phone at 8:00 this morning. Its 10:11 - and I'm down to 71 % battery life with very limited e-mail, phone, and websurfing. Infact all I did was show someone the web, read my e-mail once, and called my sister and mom for about 4 minutes each....

I'm looking into a bigger/better battery - and would gladly buy it.

this is the first i've heard of this nav4all app. how much does it cost? if you can get turn by turn nav w/o a monthly fee, that's yet another reason to get the eris as supposed to the droid.

I actually bought both. One for me and one for the wife. I played with both while picking which one to give to her and ended up keeping the Eris for myself. Sense UI is very cool + Web experience is better + Widgets. Droid does look and feel very solid and expensive and has a better screen. I don't text a lot so the keyboard was not important, even though Eris has a really nice word prediction function, you can't really make mistakes. Anyway, a very hard choice to make. I play with both every day and almost would love to see Droid's body, screen and Android 2.0 with HTC's Sense UI over that. That would be sweet

Ok everyone, i am back to my thread i began last night. So i went in to the verizon store this morning around 11, and picked up my new phone. I picked the eris over the droid. After having it all day, i am in love with it. Unlimited internet and i gotta say, the virtual keyboard is amazing, very responsive. I do not regret my choice at all. And by the way, after testing out in the store and talking to the rep, the camera on the eris is better for both pictures and videos, the videos i've taken to test it out is flawless. ALMOST LIKE DVD. I love this phone and am excited to have a phone that i will love for 2 years.

I played with both for about 30 minutes total. I spent 5 minutes on the Droid, noted that swiping between panels was a bit jerky but overall it's fast and responsive.
I played with the Eris, and it reminded me of a faster Sprint Hero. I tested out some of the things that I noted slowed down the Sprint Hero and it definitely handled it better over all. After about 15 minutes I went back to the Droid and it felt night and day faster.
I will agree that swipping between panels is not as smooth, the physical keyboard is cramped, and the camera (still) needs software updates. However, it definitely has more hardware potential and when root access is gained there's no telling what the community will port over.
I'm not sure that it's likely that an HTC ROM like the Sense UI could be ported, but if there's a device that will get it outside HTC I could see it being the Droid.
That being said, if Verizon releases the Passion before my 30 days or announces it before my 30 days I will take it back and hold out for the Passion.
The Eris already has a technique for gaining root access, but that doesn't change the hardware. I believe that software updates and optimizations will smooth out the Droid's UI.
Either way, if someone went for the Eris or Droid I believe they made a great decision, they are both awesome phones and offer a wonderful user experience.
My personal decision led me to the Moto Droid, but they are both fantastic devices and I'd never knock anyone for choosing one over the other. There's no wrong decision in this choice, only your choice ;)

There were lots of little things that bothered me about the Moto Droid that I just couldn't overlook. First and foremost--I did not like the physical keyboard at all. I'm coming from a Tour, so I feel like the Moto's keyboard was garbage. What's the point of having a keyboard that you never plan on using? Couple this with the fact that the Eris has such a great virtual keyboard, and it was a no-brainer for me.

Other hardware issues that bothered me (with regards to the Moto Droid) were the volume rocker and the battery door. These are small details, I know, but they really bothered me. The volume rocker was plasticky and extremely loose--felt like it would fall off after a few months. The battery door fell off in my pocket once and once again while I was just playing with the device. The Eris's battery door is one piece and much more aesthetically pleasing, in my opinion. The volume rocker on the Eris is a little more robust and solid.

I didn't find much difference in the Android 1.5 and 2.0 software versions, other than the Google Navigation. I think the Sense UI helps close the gap. Now I know A LOT of people will disagree with me on this, but for the average user, 1.5 is fine. It's like the difference between a 5-Series BMW and an M5 BMW. The M5 is obviously superior, but the 5-Series is adequate for most.

Mostly, I use my phone for web browsing and tasks that can be handled by the Google products I've been using for the past couple years (Gmail, Google Chat, Calendar). The Eris can accommodate my needs on all fronts, plus, it feels better in the hand and pocket. Because of this, I chose the Eris.

There is no way the motorola is flimsy. I am very happy with the video quality of the droid and the recording of the videos is amazing for being a phone. My brother has the hero and there is pretty much no reason for me to want that phone so to me droid wins.

That's why it's called a personal opinion.

To me, the sliding keyboard and overall feel of the Droid feels very mechanically poor and clunky. It did not have a solid feeling. The keyboard's membrane style also felt poor.

Not saying it's a piece of junk, but it does not have the same feel as the Eris.

Again, personal opinion.

The volume rocker was plasticky and extremely loose--felt like it would fall off after a few months..

Funny, my Eris feels the same way.....

And great analogy of the 5 series vs. the M5. I feel the same way. I am honest enough to admit that I'm not "into" phones enough to notice all the superior features of the Android 2.0 OS. For me, the phone does what I need it to do...fast internet, and good messaging and good contacts management, plus the ability to sync with Outlook.

To me, I place a great deal on the tactile sensation of the phone. Is it easy to carry around and comfortable to hold? I'm on the go alot and always throwing the phone in a pocket...the droid would NOT go in my pocket nearly as easy as the Eris.

And the keyboard...I hear you about having a keyboard and not wanting to use it. That track pad on the right made it a stretch for my right thumb...and I have big hands. Not comfortable at all.

As someone said, both great phones, both with their positives and negatives so it's just a matter of which positives really grab you and which negatives you're willing to live with.

Went with the Eris.

Sense UI is simply superior to Moto Droids interface although you never know someone can make a slick interface for the Moto Droid in the future.... Moto Droid just felt too big for me also. Eris is nice compact and pocketable.

I dont care if Moto Droid is faster, I can still do anything on the Eris that Moto Driod does in a more compact and pocketable device and thats all that matters to me...and 2.0 will be out for Eris for sure.

I simply wasn't happy with the Driod's design and didn't feel like the extra $100 was worth the camera flash and the 2.0. Once again personal opinion. I played with both before my purchase.

Not sure if the Droid does this (didn't test this in the store because I didn't know about it) but I simply love the fact that when I'm on a call and I pull the phone away from my ear, the unlit display lights up which makes navigating voicemail and other functions so much easier. Not sure if this is part of the sense-UI but it's amazing!

Its always bothered me with my other phones having to press a "send" key to un-sleep the display, especially in the daylight when my other phone displays weren't "fully" asleep and it acted like I was trying to answer call waiting and would interrupt my current call. I say "Phooey to that!"

Great replies about these two phones. I've played with both for only 5-10 minutes but have yet to purchase one. I'm leaning on the Eris for it's overall design and lack of keyboard. I was a hard core physical keyboard guy for four years, until I got a iPhone 3GS and now I'm waaay faster on a touch screen than a physical. I even went back to a BB and my fingers never got used to the buttons.

I may head back to the store and check them both out, especially when the Eris is only $99...now that is a major steal!
