HTC has about a week to release this patch before I return my Evo. The unresponsive screen didn't bother me at first but yesterday while trying to use GPS in my car mount it was infuriating. I couldn't scroll without clicking things. I had to touch the back of the phone with another finger to make it work.

Radio Shack has 0 in stock and I may be forced to return back to my TP2.

I got my EVO on launch day at Radio Shack as well, didn't try wi-fi until the 7th. My signal strength is very bad when compared to other wi-fi devices, including my iPhone. Sitting in my office / den which is about 30+ feet from my router, the iPhone signal is solid, yet the EVO is a friggin dot. I find this to be unacceptable, I logged a ticket with HTC, performed all of the troubleshooting that they asked to do, nothing worked. They basically said I can send it in for repairs or contact Sprint for a replacement. So, do I now call Sprint or do I just call Radio Shack and get a replacement?

If it matters, I spoke to both HTC and Sprint customer support yesterday, and they told me that they were going to have an update soon to address the wi-fi signal strength and bluetooth drop out issues, which are both related to each other. The genuises at Sprint said that HTC was working on a router and bluetooth compatability list... hahahahahahah.... HTC confirmed a software update..

ouch. that's gotta hurt.

and things like wifi reception and such are often rectified through firmware fixes. Some inefficiency in the firmware's interaction with the radio. If it's a dealbreaker that's one thing. Some just ride it out until it's fixed. Think there's a few threads on wifi performance if you search.

Yep, did searches here, and on other forums about this. I've tried everything, different routers, different settings, I've spent way too much time debugging this issue. I'm all for waiting for an update, my question is how long? HTC's response seems to indicate they have no idea when and if a firmware update will resolve this issue (see below).

My last response to HTC included several links to sites reporting this issue; Yet HTC still will not even acknowledge it's a problem. What I would like to do is go back to the RS where I purchased it from, see if they have stock, and have them fire up a new one and test the wi-fi at the shop, along with everything else before I leave.

Here is HTC's final response about this issue:

"HI, Daniel. Thank you for your reply regarding the wi-fi connection with the HTC Evo 4g. If no other steps have resolved the issue, including using only routers that utilize wireless B and G frequencies or resetting the device, the only other option that HTC can offer would be to contact our Repair Department at the number provided previously: 1-877-293-0807. Unfortunately, we are unable to determine when, or if, future updates may be released. Also, for any request for device replacement or exchange, you will need to speak to Sprint as this is handled solely by the carriers within their policies and guidelines. IF you are in need of additional technical support, feel free to contact our Tech Support at 1-888-449-8358."

You know what? Engineering isn't telling the call center what is really going on. Even "Tech Support" are people who NEVER talk to the engineers. Beleive me, I know. I'm an engineer for a large consumer electronics company. We can't call tech support and fill them in every time we think we are on to something. Until our fix is tested, verified, qualified, regressed, etc, the call center doesn't know it's coming. When we have a fix, it get's released, and the call center is informed through a training manager, who has to properly train the call center on what to say, do, etc.

If they give dates out they create expectation. They miss the date and the entire forum whines and complains. Better for them to say soon and go from there. If it's a firmware issue, trying to find a fix on your own will just get frustrating. It happens all the time with new devices and there's often a fix within a month or so of acknowledgement, or so it's been elsewhere.
