Root purchasing rooted droid, any danger?

hello,

is it possible that someone can load up some software that'll allow it to phone home my information to them? im in the process of purchasing a rooted droid. id much rather keep it rooted, and start from there learning it, instead of having to start from scratch.

if something like that is possible, would a factory reset cause any problems since the phone is already rooted, or would i have to go through an unrooting process first?

You can do a factory reset and it will stay rooted.

I don't know what your question is, but I will try my best to answer.

You can home information to someone on a computer by emailing them? You could also use an instant messaging client to make a message just pop up.

If you purchase a rooted Droid, it will make life much easier. Instead of factory resetting, I suggest you just download ROM Manager off Market and then just flash a new ROM. In doing so, you will in turn clear out all the data (make sure you select this when you wipe). And when you do this, it will ask you to sign in to your google account and then you can use your own. This will delete all contacts, etc. Messages will no longer be there either. Don't forget to format the memory card to make that start fresh as well. From this point on, your rid of the old Droid and you can customize it on your own. Newly built 2.2 ROMs are blazing fast. Based on forum suggestions, I suggest you use JRummy's Kangerade when choosing a ROM. I'm normally a BB fan, but it seems v0.2 is pretty buggy at this moment and this can cause you to get frustrated with your Droid. Enjoy your device!

I should add that it might just say "wipe data/cache" instead of "factory reset" depending on which recovery software it has on it.

If it was me I would probably do that prior to booting it up for the first time. Although, if the seller has half a brain he will probably have already done it as he's got more reason to worry that you might get his personal information if he doesn't wipe it.

that was great information. thanks to the both of you.

the only reason i ask was i was worried that some how, a rooted phone could be set up to send the seller my information (passwords, accounts) without my knowledge. but since i can reset it (or get a new rom) with no issue and have it remain rooted, all the better.

The only way they could do that is....Not possible? Only way you can have your information stolen is if they put a trojan on your memory card. Then maybe they can do it remotely through the memory card by making your computer infected if you open a program that the buyer has put on the memory card. Then he can see your computer use, etc. But this is WORST case scenario and can be easily avoided by wiping your memory card (ez) and being wary of foreign programs.
