Hi all,
I've narrowed down the features I want in my first root experience, and so far I have come up with overclocking, JIT compiling, and App2SD. I want Sense removed (or most of it) because I use dxTop for my home. In browsing the forums I found the following four ROMs that seem to fit this description:

  • Senseless
  • Ivan's
  • Eris Lightning Bolt
  • CyanogenERIS
However, in browsing each there seems to be a range of issues to deal with - GPS, MMS, etc. Of course, I would like to choose the ROM with the least of those issues. White Widow was a candidate but not after reading about the controversy...

Any thoughts? Anything that would help me narrow down that list?

Thanks in advance!

Can't speak to anything other than Ivan's Eris Official: it has Sense, overclocking (limited to 710 MHz at the top-end), but I don't think it has any of the GPS or MMS issues you were referring to.

I imagine you could install an OC update/patch to allow you to OC higher if you wanted. Also, thenestor has successfully install JIT on it (kudos to him! :D) [you've got to remove some or all of Sense in order to do this, I think]. I'm not sure that JIT will give you too much more than a higher Linpack score.

I heard that there were a2sd issues with it, but the ROM frees so much memory that I haven't needed to pursue it.

Also, Ivan recently posted that he is working on another version (1.1, I think), but no release date yet posted (but I'm looking forward to it).

By the way, I love Ivan's ROM. Its been solid for me.

I'm sure others will chime-in regarding the other ROMs. Cheers!

CyanogenELB is very stable Cyanogen build.....

currently I am using A2SD, JIT and OC'd @748 with 4.9-5.0 mflops
and re metamorph themes available for cyanogen builds that work with this rom (incase you don't like the stock look), also with the latest build 2.5 I am getting excellent battery life

IMO Cyanogen Electric Lightning Bolt is the most stable Cyanogen build ....
MMS does work though you have to use Handcent

with that said....there are alot of good roms out there ...I think I have tried them all .....

I have to add White Widow 4.0 to the list of great AOSP Roms. There has been some nastiness over Andrizoid's releases, but I stay out of that and just enjoy the finished product. BTW--4.0 has JIT removed, but Andrizoid included a file to add JIT back in.

I was on Aloysius, and really like it. WW is more stable for me.

Let me know how you like it and how many MFLOPS you hit.

I did that Vanilla non-transparent background batch and that worked fine...no problems with Market this time. But I really hate gallery because it keeps trying to sync with picasa even though I unchecked it in Acounts & Sync. I'm going to try to remove that. Everything else is great. I'm using Launcherpro as my home.

MFLOPS:
3.775 @ 710 Mhz
4.998 @ 768 Mhz (I got 5.117 @768 Mhz once! Nuts...)
Froze at 787 Mhz... :(

I don't want to push it any harder than that since battery life is the biggest concern for me.

I just flashed Cyanogen ELB2.5 and I keep getting FC's on Live Wallpapers. What's the deal? Additionally, I wiped and re-flashed again..

Open gl needs to be properly installed.

Also, some won't work anyway.

I prefer navigation to be stable over lwp.

CELB is the best, stick with it. WW has plenty of things not working and is full of copyright infringement.

Did you flash the JIT patch? I'm running at 787 w/JIT and so far no instability (about 5 hours)

I'm also tired of Gallery asking for my permission. No is my final answer :p

I'm using Eris Lightening Bolt 2.5 OC'd at 806 with setcpu and have a consistent 5.2 mflops. Battery is 10x better than the 2.1ota update, one charge can easily last me 200 texts, random market surfin, internet surfin, couple games, from 7am to 1am :) Everything works perfect for me, the vanilla is beautiful and the keyboard especially blows htc's ime out of the water. If you aren't using the vanilla keyboard then throw your eris in the trash can.

I can send/recieve mms with handcent flawless and have used navigation many times with no issues. This is the best ROM I've found for our phones, if anyone can contest than I am interested.

Edit: Important point: my phone hasn't rebooted once during operation though it is OC'd at 806MHz, I even "stress tested" it using linpack and setcpu for 30 minutes each. And I get excellent battery life with setcpu's cpu governer on "ondemand".

Okay, so I rooted last night and tried out Lightning Bolt but it seemed to have a few more pre-installed apps than I was hoping for, so I tried out White Widow 4.1. It's slick, but it too seems to have a couple extra apps as well, so I guess I don't really know what true "vanilla" would be...

For example, there is a News & Weather app in WW. Is that stock or is that an extra that Andrizoid included? It is better than HTC's weather app, but I would still rather have something that can handle multiple locations. I do like Superuser and Quick Boot but I don't know if those are stock either...

Can anyone tell me what is the MOST vanilla ROM available?

It's probably Senseless, though you should know that, based on the info at the xda forum, it does have a few issues - no multi-touch in the browser (though third party browser fix that), I think no GPS from satellites in maps, just network location (though I never tried it myself), and I think no MMS (I can't remember - maybe Handcent fixes that?) Also, I think no JIT or overclock, I think no Apps2SD, but it doesn't really need it - it's pretty fast. It does have the News & Weather widget, though, but I think it's about as stock Android Open Source as I think you'll find on the Eris.

[ROM]-[5/25/2010] CyanogenERIS v1.1 + Senseless[JIT/Overclock/Vanilla!!!] - xda-developers

(Note that I am talking about Senseless 1.0, not CyanogenEris 1.1 (which I haven't tried yet - I just downloaded it this morning.)

If I understood their pages correctly, these still contain Sense, right? I am looking for something without it - preferably without anything (just the stock Home, since I run dxTop)...

Yes, sorry, they both do contain Sense. Looks like there really is no up-to-date, master ROM list :).

Here's a ROM collection page, but its a little out-of-date (11-May-2010):

Known Droid Eris Roms, Patches and Hacks - UPDATED 05-11-2010 - xda-developers

Here's two obvious ROMs without Sense:

CyanogenERIS v1.1 + Senseless
[ROM]-[5/25/2010] CyanogenERIS v1.1 + Senseless[JIT/Overclock/Vanilla!!!] - xda-developers

v0.7 - Senseless (AOSP Clone)
[ROM] v0.7 - Senseless (AOSP Clone) - xda-developers

I know there's others, but there's lots of small differences between each.

Your best bet would be to just scan the Droid Eris Android Development - xda-developers thread looking at the threads that start with "[ROM]".

Hope this helps.

Yeah, doogald mentioned senseless as well, but not having accurate GPS capabilities is a deal-breaker for me...

I found another one called Tainted Vanilla but the developer has stopped working on it so that's not really an option either.

I guess for now I'll decide between WW and ELB and wait to see if anything else comes along (froyo perhaps?)...

Thanks everyone!

Since posting that, I reloaded Senseless and checked - GPS satellite location in Google Maps is working just fine, as is Navigation and GPS satellites.

It does have the Nexus One-ish News & Weather Widget, but I actually like that. I'm running it with LauncherPro, and it works just fine.

One thing, though - with xtrROM my phone has about 80 MB available storage after loading all of my apps and cleaning cache; Senseless has about 67 MB. That may be the one thing that you look at later (though I will say that I have a few apps loaded with duplicate functions, trying out one over the other, so I'll likely free up a bit when I decide which I go with.)
