Running AVI files on Hero

I have read some posts on the subject of how to play video on the hero but none have given a definitive answer. I tried to convert avi to mp4 but wouldn't play. So I need to know really which program to convert with, free would be good, and the best settings to convert to.
Would like to use hero as a multimedia phone but not happening without being able to play movies. help please.

container = .MP4
encoder = H.264
Frame rate = 23.976
Resolution = 320 x 480
Video bitrate = 768 kbps
audio encoder = AAC
Audio bitrate = 96kbps

I am using a program called 4easysoft total video converter
I don't use that prog..but seems good.

Oh and the above settings are base settings. I always set mine so my audio is of much higher quality and my frame rate is much greater..around 30fps..same with bitrate

This is the iPhone standard quality which works very well with the Hero

H264, 24 fps, 480x320, 1.3MBit; AAC - 128KBit

i also prefer to do my videos as 3gp files

they convert much faster than mp4 files from avi's

im using avs video converter 6 with these settings

on the video settings

frame size set to 320x240
frame rate set to 23.276 fps
bitrate set to 300kbs
file type set to 3g mp4

on the audio settings

audio codec set to mpeg2/4 audio
chanels set to stereo
sample size set to 16 bit
sample rate set to 8000 hz
bitrate set to 80 kbps

i find this gives good quality and acceptable file sizes.

typical 90 min movie comes out at 250-300 ish mb

i also found that although the vids played well the seek time if you jumped from the start to say the middle of a movie was very long . i put this down to my class 2 mem card..

but yesterday i changed to MERIDIAN media player (free in market) and the seek times have vastly improved (plus it lets u edit mp3 music tags wich is very handy)

Handbrake is a good program and my movies look great. It was one of the first things to disappoint me about the Hero compared to my old N95 (it played DIVX files via a native DIVX player) but since I found Handbrake and used the H.264 codec I am so impressed with quality of picture, no stutter just smooth playback. I think there's another thread which gives a number of ideal settings?
