Sync G1 with iTunes in Windows

If you download and set up the program iTunes Agent

http://ita.sourceforge.net/

you'll be able to set sync your G1 with an iTunes playlist (you're actually syncing the MicroSD card with iTunes, but it works the same).

After you install the program, connect the G1 and follow the instructions here: http://ita.sourceforge.net/docs.html#how_do_i_add_a_new_device

The "Recognize by folder type" field is important. It's basically how the program distinguishes your G1 from any other device you connect to your computer - I added a Notepad file called ANDROID to the root of the MicroSD card, seems like it can be anything that simple.

In the "Music Folder" field, I pointed it to the Music folder at the root of the MicroSD card on the G1.

In the "Associate with playlist" I left it as "use device name." Now, when you go to iTunes, under "My Devices" there should be a playlist icon that says "G1". Add whatever files you want (make sure there isn't any DRM) and then right click on the iTunesAgent icon in your system tray and click "Synchronize devices."

Enjoy!

Beeeee-you-tee-full!!!!

This is one of my major concerns/to-do's with my G1. Works great!

Although it is simply a file transfer method, and does not update iTunes with any play counts/times from the G1, it is awesome! I suppose to make this work we would actually need an actual iTunes app - not holding my breath on Apple giving us that. ;)

Thanks for the info!!! Now to get an Outlook sync solution, and I'm set!

Worked exactly as described, and setup was straightforward and well documented. I'm new to the G1 music player, so I feel like I could get even more functionality though use of playlists.

I did, however, create a Smart Playlist in iTunes to dynamically grab recent podcasts matching a certain pattern ("NPR:") - and voila! I'm replicating the functionality I had with the iPhone, providing me my morning public radio fix while I ride BART in to the city. Ahhh....

Thanks for pointing this useful sourceforge project out! :)

FWIW, you can automatically sync the G1 with Windows Media Player 10 without the need for 3rd party software. WMP10 sees the G1 as an external media device and will sync what you throw at it.

I'm using iTunes to read from an external hard drive with my music on it, getting 1 set of music onto my iPod, and with WMP10 and a G1 with a much smaller storage space, I'm using WMP10 to just sync specific albums :)

Works like a charm.

Well i got it to work but as Expected it will only sync Music you have imported into Itunes if you purchased it from Itunes still no go. Witch doesnt suprise me i kinda figured it would be that way

I am able to put itunes purchased tracks on my g1. I downloaded and mp3 converter from here http://www.download.com/Free-Mp3-Wma-Converter/3000-2140_4-10442362.html and then converted the itunes track into a mp3. I took the mp3 and put it into the music folder on sd card and then turned it into a ring tone with ringroid. I also checked the track with the music player on the g1 and it works fine although the artist info was gone but the track name was still there.

This is great that this works. Thanks.

Could you not just copy and paste from computer to microsd card the music files/folders you want and put them on the card and go???

Thanks and I need to set this up.

Larry

if you ripped the track off a cd you can just transfer on to the sd card but I had trouble with sync and ended up using a mp3 converter to get my tracks on to the g1. I like that I can use my all of my itunes tracks.

I am having problems with this. For some reason my device is not coming up in my I-tunes under my devices. I think it has something to do with the Recognize by folder jank. I am not 100% sure of what to do there. Can you please help a brother out. Thanks

Hey, i downloaded and ran the Itunes Agent and everything is working great so far. The only thing is, when I go to "music" in my phone, i see all of the names of the songs, but it says that the author and the album are "unknown". Is there any way that I can make it so that when I put the song onto my phone I can also include the artist and album names?

WOW! This is the project that I have been hoping would happen for a long time. I've been trying to find an alternative to iTunes because of the macintosh lock-in that they force you into. I mean, even Windwos Media Player allows you to sync to any USB device? Very lame on that Apple is doing everything they can to force you use only their products. I guess that's par for the course from a corporation.
Anyway, thanks much for the information on Songbird.

I'm downloading and installing it right now on my mac.
