Long press (press it and hold your thumb there), then when your phone vibrates and the icon turns red, drag it to the trash can at the bottom of the screen.
Never found the trashcan but thats ok dragging to bottom seemed to do it
it is possible to remove Icons (or are they called widgets now) for preinstalled apps like Gmail??? i don't need the clutter... this is a PHONE not an email box

Join the club. lol. There are a few threads discussing the deletion of default apps. It seems that the apps have been embedded into the OS, so they cannot be removed.
I have no experience rooting phones like this, but some people seem to think that once your phone is rooted, it will be possible to delete them.
And to answer your question... no one knows how to root these phones yet. There is also no timeframe. Just a "someone... somewhere... sometime... will figure it out".
It seems like the Droid had some huge differences between various releases. Some phones do things or look certain ways that others do not. We'll probably see a more uniform layout to everything after the firmware update.
In my experience, most new electronic devices are buggy and tend to be a tad disappointing when they are first released. The beauty of phones like this, though, is that they have huge potential. People will be finding new ways to improve it continuously, so don't get too down in the dumps by the little things so early on.
The stupid search bar is actually worse the the actual Voice Dial widget,,,, if one actually finds what I asked... it stops... and requires me to phsyically select the correct choice.. so it is a "Voice Search but you must push button" i hve found the voice search on maps is good if I go for pizza and afterthat it is so so.. i have been told as the google servers gather all our data they will learn and it better
Umm... you can control your whole phone by voice (including searching) by adding a shortcut to your home screen for "voice search". It will appear as an icon like any other program, and operates very well.
I don't see the issue?
also... as far as the voice search, be more specific. It's like taking your car to the mechanic. If you just say "fix it" he will have tons of questions. if you describe what the car is doing in great detail, he won't. Its like anything else.
Instead of saying "Call johnny"... try saying "call johnny mobile 1" next time.
I've never had it prompt me asking more questions.
When I use the Voice Dialer app, it brings up a dialog box confirming the number. I have to press Ok.
If I use the microphone icon next to the Google Search widget, it dials the number.
