Root How to Root with Bootloader 0.8

Firstly apologies if this has been asked, but I cannot seem to find the answer.

My Desire is Bootloader version 0.8.

As far as I can see the instructions are for 0.75 and below.

Two questions, please.

1) As I read things I dont need to have a Gold Card for the Desire ?

2) Where are the instructions for Bootloader 0.8, please

As I read things I dont need to have a Gold Card for the Desire ?

From the above link:
a microSD card (to be made into a 'goldcard' - only necessary if your device is an operator supplied device)

So if you Desire is not operator branded then you don't need a Gold Card.

What I would like is a guide that doesn't mention the bloody gold card because it ain't half confusing.

Why does everyone say 'Use ROM Manager'? are you all on the payroll ;)

Just use fake-flash and then you know it'll work (I know ROM Manager does it too but I think it's just confusing people). Better still, just use the normal root method (TinyCore works best)

This is indicative of the whole problem with rooting. There are far too many different methods and utilities. It just ends up being too confusing.

You say the 'Normal root method' but there's no such thing. Lekky's guide may be pretty good.....if you've got bootloader 0.75. If you've got 0.80 then you need to go off and hunt for other methods. It all gets far too confusing far too quickly.

Rooting isn't a problem. I got that done pretty easily. It's what you do after that's the issue. I've spent all day trying to get apps2sd working, and then trying to recover my phone after I'd thought I'd bricked it, and then a couple more hours trying to get apps2SD working...all to no avail.

I've got a successfully rooted phone, but the whole reason for rooting it, apps2sd, still won't work. Searching on forums and googling answers leads you down so many dead ends and so much conflicting information that it's a complete nightmare. I've given up, this just isn't worth it. I've got a uselessy rooted phone now :(

And why? Because HTC couldn't be arsed to put enough internal memory in to the Desire to be able to install sufficient apps. I'l be totally honest. I really considered getting shot of the Desire and just ordering an iPhone4.

If you go over to MoDaCo it has the same rooting method for 0.80 so it's not hard (seeing as Paul rooted the Desire first so it's all his work anyway!!)

In the 'normal' method you partition the SD card after rooting the phone via the custom recovery utility. It's all very easy if you just go through it step by step. I don't use A2SD as I resign my ROMs with my apps already in the /system partition so if I ever have to wipe I don't lose any (except paid-for apps)

Yes, I did this and, no, it's not hard. I rooted it all fine.

This is where it all goes FUBAR. I went through it step by step, several times, and it just didn't work.

How do you know it's not working? Some apps, regardless of using A2SD, install themselves on internal memory

Several things. It's using far too much internal memory. I know some will be used but it's using all of it. I'm using 'root explorer' which shows everything installed on internal memory.

I've also got Google Earth crashing and complaining that it can't write to the 'Data' directory.

Only thing I can suggest is partition the card first THEN flash the ROM you wish to use...other than that I'm out of ideas.

Thanks, but after spending the whole day trying to figure this cr@p out I've run out of patience.

Its not HTC's problem m8, it YOUR own stupidity, If your too stupid to follow a guide, maybe you should get an iphone,

EddyOs it right its not hard, most people with more that two brain cells can and have worked it out.

I just think you need to do some more research.

Yeah, that's why there's a 117 page thread over at MoDaCo with people having problems, because they're all stupid.....just like you!

I have been doing this for a while and got it perfect now, here are some instructions i wrote for a guy on here who PM'd me!

They may help anyone who is stuck, or needs a noob guide for an 0.80 bootloader!

What i did to get A2SD was go to 14/Jun r6 riskfreeroot - HTC Desire rooting guide - now with HBOOT 0.80 and OS to 1.21 support - Android @ MoDaCo to root the phone in the first place - which is what you've done.

Then Lekky's guide won't work for us as we have 0.80 bootloader. So dont use that - i tried 3 times!

Once its rooted as above, go to here: 10/June v1.8.1.7 - fake-flash by Koush, launching recovery on your device without a PC - Android @ MoDaCo and make sure you can access the Custom Recovery screen.

If i remember correctly, the second step of that says to put update.zip onto your SD card but from the download on that page there isn't one! Anyway, what you had to do was just rename the zip you download to update.zip ... something that took me a while to work out!

Anyway, you are ready to move on once you can see the NANROID BACKUP option in the green menu following these instructions.

Then i went here: 27/May r3.1 - MoDaCo Custom ROM for HTC Desire with Online Kitchen - Android @ MoDaCo and choose the option called "- r3.1 ROM with default MoDaCo additions and A2SD+" with this link: http://coblitz.codeen.org/www.romra...odacocustomrom-withadditions-a2sd+-signed.zip

This is a Modaco homebrew ROM, so i am a free member there and as you can see it includes A2SD+ (which is same thing)

Now with that zip also on your SD card go to the NANDROID BACKUP found in the CRI (Fake-Flash) section and after selecting NANDROID BACKUP it will then ask you to update from SD and you select the Modaco 3.1 zip!

Good luck

Anthony1...don't see your arse mate....swearing on a forum doesn't win you any friends at all (even it's from a post such as you had...) I know it's frustrating, esp once you get the rooted bit done. I thought I was the thickest dude this side of the equator after I'd done the (easy) rooting part....it's just after that bit that I got stuck too! Took me piggin AGES to complete the part I'd started doing it all for in the first place...ie) apps2sd!!

If I remember rightly, the the thing that threw me a bit was, I wasn't even sure that I'd succesfully rooted it in the first place....maybe someone could do an app to check it is or summat...I don't know!

Also....I'd had an error during the flashing that took a while to sort out when using ROM Manager (it seemed to hang during the procedure of rooting, and I thought for a bit, I'd bricked it too....luckily, I HAD backed up my existing rom with it before starting, so was able to re-flash to that, and then start over again!) As a result, I wasn't 100% confident with ROM Manager...but stuck with it and it all worked out OK!

If I then had an app to say...Yep - your phone is rooted...I'd have been more confident moving on.

I used the app to partition my card and that was the thing that kicked it all in....but again, there's no concrete confirmation it's worked.

When 2.2 comes out, I think I'll flash to that and stick with that, coz for the average user, I can't see any obvious benefit to stay with a rooted phone once we can install to SD!
