Gmote is Great!

I have been looking for a touch pad type of app for years all the way back to when Ipaq PDA's roamed the earth. What a great app and I'm just amazed that its free too.

I have a media center PC hooked up to my big screen tv for Movies and Music. I have been using VNC on a laptop to control its actions from the couch but its laggy and hogs too much bandwidth. Gmote works just as I want it to, as a remote touchpad and keyboard and nothing more. I can move the mouse and launch local movies or navigate through Netflix and watch a movie from there without busting out the laptop and running VNC.

I am still in search of a free app that allows keyboard and mouse control.....BUT also has live snapshots of the computer screen as you move mouse or use keyboard. This way, I can fully control my computer while away from the computer AND monitor.

Gmote does not show monitor screenshots. This makes Gmote a remote control app only useful while you can still see your computer monitor. I want full control and screenshot feedback so I can control my computer from anywhere.

Requires you to download a gmote server. I want to use VNC, thus I am disappointed.

I'm having an issue. When I input my Server Password on my phone, the password screen just pops up again. What's going on?

You guys don't understand the point of the app.

I'm with the OP, I use it for my laptop and HTPC when I'm watching movies.

Yes, I am very happy the OP pointed this app out. I have planned on buying a media pc in the past, but this just makes it that much more convenient.

I imagine it would also be really nice for those tyat workout at home, being able to easily access all your music via LAN.

Plus, its fun to make my wife think the mouse is going crazy on her

Just tried this today. It's awesome. My wife and I love it. My LCD TV is my monitor, so not having the keyboard/mouse at the couch is nice. Can reserve that for playing games.

I also love gmote. I too use my media center pc for a DVR and watching movies and surfing the web on my big screen. This app is great mainly for the touch pad and keyboard.

I have a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard but the keyboard is always put up across the room and I usually only need to use it for a quick search or something. So using my phone for the keyboard is great.

The only thing I wish gmote could do is to use the pause/play/skip controls with media center and media player.

I agree. Doesn't work with my bluray software either. What I do like is that the Gmote server plays music on its own through the PC without bringing up Winamp or that sort. I also like that it can stream music to the phone.

Petite question on GMOTE.... does controlling your PC's music via using the HTC as a remote mean that you will now be streaming all your music files on your internet connection, thus raising your bandwidth in leaps and bounds? I ask because I'm on a capped bandwidth plan (like most), and don't want to use up my bandwidth and pay $$$$$$$$ every month just to control Windows media player by remote.

You can use it both ways - stream the music to your phone and play it there, or just use the phone to turn the music on/off on the pc itself. In other words, just use it as a remote mouse.

I'm still unclear on what I was trying to find out, though.... whether GMOTE uses up your ISP bandwidth while it is streaming music or controlling your PC via the LAN on wifi. If I play music on my PC, I am not taking up my ISPs bandwidth. But if I use GMOTE to play music, am I using up my bandwidth from having GMOTE control the music via wifi?

Well, you're using gmote over your wireless network, so that wouldn't use any ISP bandwidth I don't think - wouldn't it be over the local network? Also, just sending mouse movements and clicks to control your PC wouldn't use up any bandwidth. Streaming music from the pc to the phone would be using more data, but again, I think it would be local data only - it wouldn't go out to the internet and then back in - it would just be handled by your wireless router.

Can i use this App to play movies/music on my Laptop onto my TV (new LG)?

I'm having to move usb drive from 1 to the other at the mo. Have also tried PLEX (LG Media Server) but it's not v reliable.

It's just a remote control for your computer. If you connect your computer to your tv and can play movies now, you can then control the mouse from across the room with this app on your phone.
