sorry for putting this in 2 places - newbie
im a complete newbie to android, ive got a htc desire and ive only had it a week and a half, i do absolutely love it but need help with a couple of things.
im on orange so called unlimited internet but really capped at 500mb, ive downloaded the widget to track usage but the issue is more for when im at work (at home i use my wifi and my battery lasts ok)
however when i go to work i can only get "G" as the internet and my battery goes down super fast but the main prob is my data usage goes mental, i used 23mb over a 24 hour shift even with uninstalling 97% of my apps and switching the mobile internet off, i found it still being used so i turned my phone off, i can see in settings what uses the data and ive uninstalled some but im worried ill get rid of something ill need (i uninstalled orange world and my phone switched itself off!) im worried about using all my MB when im not even near my phone and also kinda annoyed.
do lots of apps eat more data? it feels a little daft to be getting rid of all my apps to save my MB for hotmail and facebook, i liked my apps it seems silly to have to curb them or install them when at home and on my wifi to save data and then uninstall them when i go to work,
i really went through the 211 page manual and tryed turning everything off but my MB usage still got caned.
is there anything that really stops all my MB being consumed? does turning my phone off totally stop it?
sorry for huge long panic rant, i love my phone but dont want a huge bill for going over oranges not unlimited internet
any advice please? thank you

i did the background data one yesterday as well as turning off mobile network in wireless in settings, is there something in the background that i cant turn off acessing the internet?

does turning the phone of help as well?

in the settings widget i have airplane mode, bluetooth, gps, mobile network and wifi. is the mobile network on the right one to use to swtich it off?

thanks for your and help and sorry for the blatently dense newbie questions:):)

I was turning my mobile internet off within settings and using wifi at home. Was having the issue of the mobile internet not turning back on though when I went back into settings in the morning.

last night I put the little switch widget thats within settings and it works perfectly now.

As was said above i would put that on one of your screens and switch it off when not needed. There should be no data usage when this is off.

i got to work at 10am noticed data usage high when i wasnt even using the phone at 2pm ish and turned it of then, had it on for approx one hour in evening to go on internet but is was being super slow so i turned it off, i had the phone switched off overnight and working it out when i got home at 12pm today id used 23MB
im in again on thurs for another 24 hour shift and im going to turn mobile network off and my wifi before i leave the house and not turn it on for the whole 24 hours just to see what happens.

I think many people who have this data connection issue is because there are so many different ways of turning data connection off/on. Its simply too complicated for the phone.
Anyway have you looked at location services, maybe an app is pinging your location using data? Also I have one of those 3g/internet measuring doobree flip flops! There kinda not totally up to date. I know this coz I just got back from spain whereby I watched internet usage like a hawk. Sometimes it would take several hours to add on my mornings internet usage, it was kinda annoying it wasn't instant.

Just a point to note sunny, Orange 'Unlimited' net is actually 750mb (Fair Usage) which isn't a hard cap and has no charges if you exceed (just the potential of having your speed slowed). If you have 'Inclusive' Net then that is only 500mb with a hard cap and extra charges as soon as you go over.

The above info is taken from the latest actual T&c's , not the confused answer you sometimes get from Customer Service.

not quite true cos it depends on which tariff his on, cos dolphin has 500mb cap and panther which i have is unlimited, and in t&c it doesnt state limit.
btw the above seems like the iphone terms (750mb)

here is the t&c
"Inclusive Mobile Internet - up to 500MB anytime mobile internet browsing. Usage above 500MB will be charged at the rates set out in the Price Guide - see orange.co.uk/paymonthlyguide.
Unlimited mobile internet -subject to fair usage. Mobile internet is not to be used for other activities (e.g. using your handset as a modem, non-Orange internet based streaming services, voice or video over the internet, instant messaging, peer to peer file sharing). Should you exceed your fair usage limit or such use be detected, notice may be given and Network protection controls applied to ensure the quality and availability of our network to all customers. This may result in, at Orange

ok i used the widget to turn of the mobile internet and it worked brilliantly no useage until i turned it on myself. i turned facebook and hotmail to manual as they where both on a 15 min refresh. thanks for all your help and advice i also spent a long time talking to orange about my (not) unlimited interent and boy do they seem to have some communication issues going on or what! my contract is defo for unlimited interent, sam who sold me my deal (which is a dolphin mish mash) is adament it is uncapped unlimited and has added notes to that affect on my a/c of course if i go mental ill get a letter but from her guidelines they do not have a FU cap!! mental the billing dept have caps in there info for the 500mb contract deal and unlimited at 1G they admitted caps have come in place recently, i told them to research the products they sell to see that andriod caps are unrealistic so i think i might just let my dolly (desire- im a girl i can name her) just cane the internet and see if they try and bill me for going over 500mb. i was also told the reason my a/c shows interent useage counting down from 500mb is because 'thats the only calculater they have'!!! riiiiight!

There's a My Orange app on the market that I use every day, gives you a breakdown of how much data and calls you've used/got left. I find it really helpful.

I started on a Dolphin package with 'Inclusive' internet last month when I got the phone (it was sold as unlimited to me by CPW), it showed the 500mb counting down as yours does.

This month I've switched to Panther (with 'Unlimited' internet) and now I have no countdown or data usage listed on my account.

As I mentioned sunny, you can get 3 different answers from 3 different customer service reps so I'm going to work on the premise that the actual terms and conditions is the correct answer for myself.

It can be really confusing I know.
