Root Some Nub Questions/Comments.... :)

I am getting the new Evo 4G in the next week or so, when Sprint gets some more in(currently sold out). I am upgrading from a Rumor First Gen..... rofl. Anyways, i want to root my Evo and i have had a few questions of the subject.

What exactly is a ROM for a rooted phone? My interpretation of it is basically just a jail broken (.iso equivalent) image of android with some customization and tweeks done to the OS. If that is correct or wrong, please let me know.

And a recovery ROM, this is a backup ROM you boot into to install a different ROM or to remove one and try another. And all other ROMS basically run on top of the recovery. I think thats right...

Also, after my Evo is rooted can i tether my wireless devices to the Evo using the wireless hot-spot feature?(Without another 30$/Month).

Last questions, does anyone have a link to where i could buy a 32 Gig Micro SD? I cannot seem to find one. And if anyone has any suggestions for a good screen protector/hard case for the Evo that would be great.

Any other basic info on rooting would be appreciated.

Yes essentially you are correct

You don't use the built in hotspot feature but rather a different app that comes with the majority of custom roms out there

as far as screen protectors I had the invisible shield one and ended up pulling it off because I didn't like the feel of it run the phone naked and take care of it much better feel IMO

When you flash a ROM, you are literally replacing the OS. Different ROMs offer different levels and/or degrees of customization, enhancements, performance gains, or newer versions of Android, such as 2.2 Froyo. Here's a list:

Are you referring to a recovery image? If so, this a boot level, text based interface, or as an analogy, a type of 'DOS level' Android if you will. Depending on the recovery image on your phone, when you boot into recovery, you have options to backup your phone or recover to a previous state, flash or update ROMs, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, drive mode, etc. When you're finished with recovery mode, you then reboot the phone back into full Android and observe the changes you've made. Some ROMs require you to reset and wipe your data and/or cache. If so, you'll have to set your phone up again with your Google account and sync info, restore your apps and system data via utilities, or reinstall and arrange your screens from scratch.

Instead of the Sprint HotSpot app, you'll use one from the market called Wireless Tether. No Sprint fees, free app, but it's generally a good idea to send the dev something for the time and effort involved in creating and sharing it (as well as the dev who created and shared your slick new ROM).

I think the current class 6 microsdhc limit is still 16gb. The only 32gb cards I've seen are class 1&2 SanDisks, starting around $160.

Micro SD Flash Memory - Sandisk 32GB micro SDHC (Class 2) Card (Retail Packaging)

Class 2 is ok for docs or music, but if you're using it for data (especially apps2SD), then an Evo will likely stand around and possibly choke while waiting on it. 16gb class 6 are much easier to find, with several reputable brands/sources in the $70-75 range for far better transfer rates than a class 2 can provide.

Sorry for such a noob like question but how would I go about backing up my phone? What I mean by that is if I was installing a theme/mod and it didnt come out right, how could I revert back?

When booting into recovery and going into backup/restore screen I see
-nand backup
-nand + ext backup
-nand restore
-backup Google proprietary system files
-Restore Google proprietary system files

What do these options mean? Also when flashing a mod/theme, am I supposed to clear the cache first? lol, I'm so lost.

The goggle files you really don't have to mess with. So I've heard. Unless they change there technology.... I read about this I a thread some where I believe azkabam said some thing about it hold on illl find the thread
