Root silly root question

Hello,
I currently have official ota 2.1 running on my Droid Eris and was considering rooting to remove some bundled software, like that mp3 store, footprints, etc.. I'm happy with the. Official and have these questions:
1 will rooting wipe the device? Apps, logs, etc.
2 I have hboot 1.47 now and want it completely reversible. Can I un root and retain 1 47 hboot?
Can I root and keep the official 2.1 onboard?
Is it worth rooting for the sole reason of removing unwanted software?

1. yes (you can backup your stuff on / from your /sdcard though)

2. yes, you can un-root

3. well, there are custom ROMs that were built using the latest v3 2.1 leak (such as Ivan's Eris Official 1.0 w/OC), but with bloatware, and root goodness baked-in

4. if you are getting low on memory space for your apps, many custom ROMs that have bloatware removed, give you much more space on first flash. Ivan's starts with over 140MB after installing--I never had more than 99MB (I never did "see" the 2.1 OTA , so I don't know what it would have given me...).

You'll end-up after rooting with an HBOOT of 1.49 with "S-OFF" (S-OFF means security is turned off) this is only accomplished by flashing the leaked base root ROM).

Funny thing is I didn't root for a month after getting my eris... wanted to wait out the OTA.
Then gave in 2 days before it was released.

Can't believe I waited so long!

Same here...thought I would lose the ability to root, so I jumped on the root bandwagon right before the OTA hit my phone...

Yes, a couple of new ROMs, actually.

The first is a leaked 2.1 ROM (base root ROM) that had its factory bootloader set to S-OFF which allows you install a custom recovery partition which allows you flash the custom ROM that you really want (that has all the goodies). The base root ROM is a pretty early, buggy version of 2.1, but it has the key ingredient of the S-OFF HBOOT bootloader.

Note: the Eris was not actually rooted like most other devices. The base root ROM was "provided" (leaked) to the outside world.

Read through the stickied threads in the all-things-root-eris forum (where this thread is) to get a broader idea about what is going on. All of the stickied threads have information that is good to have at least partially absorbed before deciding to and attempting to root.

All the other questions are reasonably well answered. Let me add a tiny detail here.

Flashing a new ROM will overwrite the current OS partitions (boot, system, and data), so you can not carry all of your configurations from one ROM to another - if that is what you meant by your question #1.

OTOH, you might have been asking a slightly different question, which is: can I root and preserve a BACKUP of my current ROM?

The answer to this question is "Yes, but not with the default instructions as given." To do this, you need to perform what is known as the "Toastcfh battery pull trick".

Even if you don't plan on using this method, it is extremely valuable to look through the pictures and text in the above post to get familiar with what the first part of the rooting process looks like.

The OS software - including the OTA updating process - is completely independent of which bootloader is on the phone. It is entirely possible (but a bad idea) to put 1.5 on the phone with a 1.49.0000 S-ON bootloader - and the OTA would still happen.

If you are concerned (you needn't be), just make sure you keep a copy of the ROOT-PB00IMG.ZIP file, the Amon_RA (v1.6.2) recovery image, and the Leak-V3 PB00IMG.ZIP file in an backup somewhere - then all options are available to you.

I think your concerns about future updates are a little bit overdone - my money is riding on VZW doing not a single thing further for Eris users. But even if it does happen, even the Leak-V3'ers will get that update. The reason? It is identical to the OTA-2.1

Yes, this is exactly what I was hoping to accomplish...trying to publish a lot of the "little things" that you have espoused over these past months (checking HBOOT version, MD5 sums, basic USB debugging, finding your SDK , etc.)--hopefully a little more one-stop shopping for simple issues.

I stupidly formatted my document with leading spaces on each line, not remembering/realizing that the forum editor strips-out leading spaces. So, I have some format editing to do to make it look a little nicer.

Should I PM you with something or just post it up?

You can put stuff inside a [ CODE ] [ /CODE ] tag pair (without the spaces I used here, natch) to use a fixed width font and preserve spaces if you need to... it will look a little strange if you do the whole document that way, but sometimes it is necessary for things like tables with columns. I think you can also use other tag pairs within that basic block as well for thing like boldface, font color, etc... maybe even font size changes.
