Encryption and security experts say you should stop using Telegram
Gizmodo has interviewed a number of encryption and security experts to find out what they think about the security technology Telegram uses.

They don't like that Telegram messages aren't encrypted by default, they say the encryption technology is flawed, and claim the app leaks metadata "like a champion."

Interestingly, this is Telegram's official response to that article:

Nothing is ever stored in plaintext on our servers. Telegram's cloud chats can indeed technically be deciphered by the server — in order to enable seamless syncing for the entire cloud history on newly connected devices (you can use Telegram on many devices at once). But the decryption keys are split and stored in multiple data centres controlled by different legal entities spread across different jurisdictions. As a result, an unrealistic level of inter-governmental cooperation is required to force us to give up data. (E.g. several court orders from different jurisdictions.)
