It appears that Allo may be launching this week
Evan Blass has posted a very simple tweet in regards to Google's new messaging service, Allo. The tweet simply states: "Hello, Allo (launches this week)." So if this tweet is true, then we'll see Google Allo at some time in the next week.

It launched today - but for me, the half-baked SMS fallback capability means it will likely not get used a whole lot. After the amount of time they spent on it, full SMS fallback capability would have been the bare minimum to launch with :( (my opinion only of course).
    • When I'm on a computer, I have to rely on hangouts
    • When I'm on my phone, to SMS somebody (that doesn't have Allo), I have to use Messenger (or deal with the half baked SMS (recipient gets an ad for Allo, and my message from a 5 digit number, instead of my #, that they can respond to)
    • So, Allo will be used to talk to... Google Assistant?
Sorry, not getting the purpose, yet.
It would have been great if they could have provided true SMS fallout (if recipient doesn't have Allo, send the message using regular SMS, and show my tel#). Oh, and allow Allo to be set as default SMS app too.

As far as the phone number, i would assume your recipient would have saved your number as your name in their contacts anyway.

I understand Google wanting to get the word out about Allo, but repetitively sending the same ad over and over seems cheap and rude.

Half baked idea. These features should've been incorporated into hangouts (which can be used as a default SMS app as well)

The features of allo are great. It's the execution of these features (ie a whole brand new half baked app/idea) that really ruins it for me.

I fought long and hard to get my friends to use hangouts I'm not gonna bother trying to convert people to allo also when it's pretty limited. (Ie you can only use it on your phone..it's tied to your phone number...but it's not a proper and app) epic fail
