Samsung Galaxy Note 8 review calls it a tough sell
Engadget's Samsung Galaxy Note 8 review notes that while the phone is excellent in almost every way, its price tag makes it hard to consider for all but the biggest of Note or Samsung fans. If you can forgive its price tag, this is the phone to have.

For every one reviewer, there is another.

Tomorrow someone will praise the machine as the next coming.

I take these dime a dozen reviewers with a grain of salt. So many reviewers want to pur their own emotion and interpretation on something, and that does not make for an unbiased "review".

If it was a "tough sell", then why are there dozens of people waiting to get their hands on this thing?

One obvious answer to your last question would be that Note fans haven't had an update since 2015 - which could make it an "easy sell" for some. ;)

Considering that the Note FE has sold out in South Korea and Note fans have been waiting 11 months for this phone, I'm interested to see what the reviewer will say about the iPhone 8's tough sell. Horrible screen, proprietary wireless charging, no microSD slot, and potentially more expensive than the Note 8.

iPhones use proprietary wired charging, so proprietary wireless won't come as a surprise to anyone ;)

I'm trying to figure out how the phone would even know if it's an Apple charger or not! A magnetic field is a magnetic field...

I know Samsung uses Qi compatible wireless charging. Which uses a digital handshake between the charger and the device that's being charged. It detects something has been placed on the pad, basically says to the it, "Are you Qi compatible?" if the phone responds "YES", then it starts charging, but if there's no handshake response, because the iPhone or whatever isn't Qi compatible, the charger won't energise the induction coil to charge it. That's how I believe Qi compatible charging basically works.

Wireless chargers don't keep their induction coils energised all the time, because that would waste energy. It's only energised when it knows when there's an item on the pad that can be charged. When the item is fully charged, it tells the charger to turn off or reduce power probably.

If Apple wireless chargers are proprietary, and not Qi, then they'll likely only handshake with and charge iPhones.
