UC Berkeley scientists create and release an earthquake-sensing app for Android
The MyShake app takes advantage of the accelerometers that we have in our everyday smartphones. These sensors are said to be sensitive enough to distinguish the difference between an earthquake and the movement of everyday life.

For MyShake to work properly though, the phone needs to be laid on a flat surface and there needs to be at least 300 of them in a given 12,000 square-kilometer region.
