Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

It would help massively if the people on phone company call centres ever had a clue what you were trying to ask them about. ;)

It really would, it's ludicrous that they aren't versed in the major handsets they offer - it's unrealistic that they'd know every single one but Orange work on a star system and the Hero/iPhone/etc... are classed as 5-star phones and generally carry the most expensive contracts so you'd at least think they'd know them!

Grrrrrrrr. I'm rooting mine tonight.

So after lastnights rumour that Orange would update at midnight, I rang them this morning, and Jonathan was my helper. Midway through me explaining what the Hero was, and how Orange airs the updates. In a snotty way he said, "Orange doesnt update any phones" So I asked him, "How come you gave us the last update then, do you even know what the HTC Hero is..."

And like a little girl, he said hold on, need to talk to my supervisor, while listening to the Black Eyed Peas on hold..(And having a piss) Jonny boy returned and told me that "Orange has the update." So i said, "Umm okay, when do we get it" He said, "Im to low on the ladder to know when, but just know, we have the Update and havent set a date yet or I havent been told it"

Its 13:53 UK time and this conversation was like 5mins ago.

What if one of us tried to get hold of someone higher up in orange maybe then they know what sort of dates we are looking at for release?

Well, earlier this morning Sean.ellingham said that he was able to debrand his Orange branded phone and then update to 2.1 by using ROM version 2.73.405.5 which is what you have said you have used, so I thought you may have a used a different version, oh well!

I noticed this today as well. So I can only assume that not all Orange phones are the same, and therefore react in different ways to this fix..

It's certainly good to know that the Orange 1.5 rom can reverse the Network lock problem that some are having with this fix.

I can't say that I'm going to be recommending Orange customers to try it now though.

I did unintentionally flash a 2.73.405.66 ROM before the 2.73.405.5 one (both found on XDA developers). I doubt that this made a difference, but I suppose it's possible.

My Hero is just over a year old now, and shipped with what I believe is the original firmware. It has had the September (2.73.61.5) and February (2.73.61.66) updates flashed in its life thus far (again, I can't see this making a difference). It was purchased direct from Orange and is still simlocked (assuming it was when I bought it - I've never tried another SIM).

Don't know if that helps anyone - just throwing it out there...

Last year I had a contract dispute with Orange, I didn't get anywhere with customer services so I was given an email address to the Executive Office at Orange, and within 48 hours after emailing them my complaint the issue was resolved!

Anyway, in light of my previous success, I have just sent them the following email.....

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope you can help with a query that neither I nor members of the Android forums have been able to resolve by speaking to Orange customer services.

I have owned an Orange branded HTC Hero since September 2009, and like thousands of others have been waiting for the much anticipated operating system software update from Android 1.5 to 2.1. Owners of unbranded phones have already received the two part (Over the Air) software updates, however owners with branded phones have been left waiting while Orange work on their own version.

I would therefore be extremely grateful if you could confirm when this update will be rolled out to users with Orange branded handsets, rumors have varied from a few days, to a couple of months and would appreciate it if you could resolve this issue and advise an accurate ETA.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to receiving your response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am not promising that I will get a definate answer (if any at all), but it's worth a shot, so fingers crossed!!

I use this thread a lot to see when my 2.1 will be coming... but i`m on Orange and not got it yet  everyone on here seems to have forgotten about us.. this thread is now about bugs and questions people have for the upgrade they`ve just got.. What about us who haven`t got it yet.. can we have a new thread?

I have also been using this thread a lot to see when 2.1 will be available in the UK, unfortunately the last 3 pages are all from orange users discussing that they cannot get it so I actually missed the fact that it is now available for download for unlocked phones.

maybe a new thread could be started and stickied announcing it's arrival and this one renamed.

2.1 now downloading :D

Why in the world you didn't watch htc support site aswell? Did you think that androidforums will make a shiny new thread (with logo and stuff) announcing the release of HTC 2.1 to the masses? No No NO NO NO!

The first thing you needed to do is check the htc support site for any information and after that, searching in forums like this one.

So it's not orange users fault that you've missed that!

BTW: the 2.1 update isn't "changed" at all if you compare to VillainRom 10.3 custom ROM. So, why people want to have the official release? I was in the same situation but i was mad as hell to just stay and wait for the update and i installed a custom rom and now i'm very happy because i can put custom 2.2 froyo when it will be out (villain 12). That's a BIG advantage, due to the fact that htc will not upgrade hero anymore.

Despite the risk of getting locked out my phone I decided to re-flash my phone with ROM 2.73.405.5 (downloaded from XDA developers) and guess what, IT BLOODY WORKED!! I'm now officially rocking Android 2.1!!

The entire process took about 45 minutes and I'm well happy! I haven't had chance to have a proper play with it as it's only just finished installing, but it all seems to be working OK!

Just thought id let you know, sent an email to 3 yesterday, and gee whizz, got a phone call this evening from them. The guy stated they had recieved an unprecedented number of emails etc on this subject, which is why they were answering. anyway...

Basically the rep told me they had recieved the software from HTC and were in the midst of testing, and although they did not have an official date for release, they reckoned it would be within the next 2 weeks.

He did say the release would likely be notified either on their website or by a text message, this hadnt been decided.

Not much of a confirmation, but at least they did say they had the software, and were aware of the large reaction this was having so fingers crossed.

It just struck me as strange that after 10 months of rumours in this thread and countless others when it did actually get released I couldn't see it as the thread had moved on to new rumours like when it would be released by orange. :D

I'm not blaming orange users and I only missed maybe 2 days, I was just making a comment that any real information in this thread gets lost amongst everything else, so yes I feel a shiny new thread would be appropriate, still I'm sorted now and hope orange users and others get sorted soon,

(maybe they should keep an eye on the orange support site for any information and after that, searching in forums like this one. :p )

Hey, 2.1-ers :D

How is Bluetooth working for you? I think it is working pretty stupidly.

I think noone should tolerate Google's (or HTC's?) bullying and nazism. Why is it impossible to send files from file managers? Why do I have to send music files from my music player? Why can't I exchange PDF files and Word documents with people? Why can't I send text files in HTML format to other devices which support this type of files? All I wanted (and all I thought I'd be getting) was Bluetooth file sharing, plain and simple. And yet, HTC and Google (don't really know who) have managed to make this so complicated that it's just insufferable.

What a massive, massive dissapointment :(

Just FYI.... there is an Orange-specific thread here - I created it by merging two other threads together. However I can't force members to use it, and anyway posts are often pertinent to other carrier's devices.

Maybe I'll have time over the weekend to tidy this one up and organise info slightly better, but it would really help if people would look for similar topics before posting new ones. ;)

Hello, just joined here after reading some good tips from others on the 2.1 update process. For the initial update to add the system software update menu item to the about menu the tip to move the phone forward to 2011 worked a treat to trigger the OTA message!! :)

So I just updated my unbranded Hero on O2 to 2.1 just last night and thought I'd share something of potential interest to others. Very happy it retains all information/data on the phone itself, can confirm I only had to readd widgets etc to the home screens.

On my phone after the update complete initially I was unable to get google mail to do anything useful kept saying no connection, also the google sync for contacts and calendars was also broken. Independently hotmail was freaking out too from the mail app telling me the certificate was out of date, yahoo mail (yes I have all of them) decided it was going to download over 1000 messages!!!
For some reason (not sure if its normal) the phone reset its system date post update to 1980!!! This basically stuffed the items working, switching the date/time on the phone to automatic then allowed everything to work correctly.

BTW Loving the 2.1 update. However I could not get the bluetooth file transfer app to work at all!! Seems to hang when attempting to read the services off my macbook even though they're paired correctly. Anyone had any luck with this at all?

So all those on networks should keep mailing them to let them know that there are lots of customers waiting for the update. Keep them on their toes.

Pretty much, I'm sure the networks already have, I emailed Orange 3 days ago, still no reply, I'll ring them up later and try to get to a person high up in the company so I can actually find out some information! The Support Staff as even more clueless then we are!

EDIT: Well people have said 3rd july for orange, Thats tomorrow! Don't let us down again orange!

I have an unbranded Hero with an O2 SIM running 2.73.405.5
Try as I might, I can't get it it to get the update. I've tried setting the clock weeks/months ahead, turning it off, on again, doing a rain dance nearby - nothing...

Anyone got any thoughts? I'm considering reinstalling the original ROM again (the same version as is installed currently) to see if I can kick the OTA update into life

Any suggestions/opinions?

Ta

I'm the same as you. I have an unbranded HTC Hero, which i got in November, and in currently on 02-UK. No sign of the update(s), the date trick doesnt work and there is no option for a system update!

This is really sad.. i cant wait until the update! and im going on holiday on Sunday so would love an update before then! :D

I'm have the same as you guys and got the initial update fine. I have an unbranded Hero on O2.
I could ONLY get mine to prompt by setting it a YEAR in advance not a few weeks/months. Try setting it to 2011 worked for me!!!
