First i would like to say that I LOVE my Evo, and it is by far the best 3G phone i have ever had!
But...
I have been playing with the 4G that is currently running here in Nashville, and have noticed some things.
1. the speed is all over the place, i have pulled everything from 6.5Mbps down 1Mb up to 530K down and 200K up. it is so variant that i have noticed that sling player (the desktop version via Android WiFi tether) runs better on 3G then it does on 4G. I can run a speed test and get a pretty reliable 4Mbps down, and then on 3g Get about 700K down, and even with that sling player will still run better (reports higher bit-rate) on 3G...
2. Building penetration... I know that WiMax runs at 2.5Ghz and there will be more degradation then 3G, but going into a building where i have full bars of 4G and then dropping down to no bars (but still have signal), when i only loose 2 bars of 3G is a bit ridiculous...
3. Range - I Know that Nashville is nowhere close to being fully deployed, but the towers seem to be highly directional. i can be literally standing below one and get one bar, i move 50 ft out and i get full signal, move about 500 ft more and be down to 2 bars.
My theory is that maybe they are ruining the towers at a lower power then normal until the city gets officially lit, but then again looking at the clear maps i begin to wonder if this is just the norm for WiMax...
Can anyone in a fully deployed city confirm or deny weather this is still the case?
