Orange UK 2.1 update news

Why were you sending the phone back?

Hope he's telling the truth and it's only another couple of weeks...!

Just a problem with connections at my business address, I'm missing more calls than I'm receiving.

Orange have been pretty pathetic about it, hopefully the update will cure some of the problems, if not the contract goes in the bin.

I don`t understand why it`s taking so long.. 2.1 works fine on all other hero`s and the only thing "Orangelike" I can see on my 1.5 hero is the boot-up picture and the word "Orange" on the notification bar. How long does it take to change them.

I`m glad Orange don`t run anything important like a Hospital or the Police Force.. we`d all be dead

Erm, no it doesn't. There have been numerous cases of Orange handsets being 'locked' and unable to access their own network due to the radio ROM that ships with the generic update. That's why carriers have an obligation to thoroughly test updates before release. The current delay may be frustrating, but pales into insignificance compared to the outcry there would be if they rolled it out and customers' handsets stopped working!

Hi folks,
Not too sure if I should post here, but would like your valued advice please....?
Have had my HTC Hero Orange contract for seven months and have been waiting very, very patiently for A2.1; along with a thousand+ other Hero users. Very peeved off with the whole affair and how they've handled this from day one, but that put aside - I'm off to live in Canada at the end of the month and would like to take my Hero with me. So I've paid for the unlock for a Canadian sim but I was also hoping that the unlock would have allowed the OTA update to have kicked in, but oh no -naughty Orange have restricted this as well. The worry is, if they don't pull their finger out before the month's up could I get the update out in Canada???? Or will I live with 1.5 forever...... arghhhhhhh! Thanks.

Now you've unlocked it, use the gold card method to flash a stock rom on there and you shouldn't have a problem :)

Blimey, this month seems to be going by really slowly. My average day consists of a mad frantic search on goolge for any new news (and finding mostly old news telling me how people across the world are all using shiny new 2.1 on their hero).

A visit to the htc uk support page, and now finally, I've found this page, where we can all share our pain.

I hope the HTC servers are up for the mad scramble to download the new update if and when it comes.

Does anyone have any odds for it coming in the next week?

Thanks Striker, always been a bit aprehensive about flashing the rom. In addition my Vista machine has had major issues with the latest sync software, causing bootup errrors and after many fix attempts, had to restore the pc. I now just use my gmail account to sync up with outlook instead to mitigate syncing. I guess I'm after a few reassuring messages from unlocked orange users that the gold card method works with no errors or consequences.

Thanks again,
Chris

Orange are taking the p*ss now.

They are still offering the Hero on contract/PAYG via the Orange website so why don't they sort it out and release the update that actually makes the product they are trying to sell a WHOLE lot better. Plus, satisfy a lot of disgruntled Orange customers that have been waiting patiently for 2.1 on Hero.

Come on Orange hurry up.

Because if they release it prematurely and it borks customers' handsets they'll be in a world of trouble, not just from said customers but from OfTel and probably whichever govt. dept. is responsible for their radio network license too if it screws with shared infrastructure i.e. roaming.

Unlocked Heroes (sp?) are running 2.1 with an Orange simm fine.

So what exactly is being tested?

That we don't know, but the fact that a good percentage of Orange handsets became locked out of their network when the generic update was applied suggests something needs looking into, wouldn't you say?
