AMOLED vs. LCD Screens

Thanks! Guess I am so frustrated from waiting for the phone I jumped the gun without doing the proper research. Got caught up in the hype of LED and LCD displays. Darn VzW, HTC, and Samsung for the backorders!

Always hated reading user comments from those that do not know what they are talking about.....and now I am one of them. Guess that is why there are smarter people than me on here to keep us straight.....uuuhhhmmm.....updated and corrected anyway...;)

It's all good, none of this stuff is "common sense" so it's understandable to have such questions.

i got my replacement the other day and noticed it was not as bright and sharp as i remembered and my sister mentioned something as well (she also has an incredible)

but i thought it was possibly because i had not seen it in awhile
so i put my old and "new" ones side by side and they definitely are different
the "new" one looks washed out, not as clean and the blacks are not as black
im planning on calling verizon tomorrow
any other suggestions?

According to the slides It says that AMOLED has better sunlight readability I thought that was where LCD won out. In know I have a harder time reading my incredible in the sun than I do my iPod touch. Is this the Incredible lacking the nits (brightness) or is it inherent to AMOLED?

I was curious about that too. My guess is that, while the screen appears brighter because of the richer blacks (which would also theoretically make it easier to read in the sun), the actual brightness is lower.

In other words, while the Incredible appears brighter in normal lighting situations due to blacker blacks, when you take it into a bright lighting situation you can tell that an LCD screen is brighter than an AMOLED.

Looking at other things that little slideshow said, that actually makes sense, since the Achille's heel of AMOLED battery draw is bright screens. So, HTC made the screen less bright so it wouldn't draw as much battery power, and they could get away with it because the contrast ratio is so awesome.

EDIT: I just checked on my brother's droid, and in the Droid's screen (LCD) is indeed significantly brighter than the Incredible's Screen (AMOLED). Although, even with the Inc on full brightness, the blacks were still blacker than the Droid on the lowest brightness :)

I believe it also has to do with the layers in the phone reflecting more sunlight.

I just received a "like new replacement" Incredible and I had read they might switch to lcds but never really thought about it. anyway, got my replacement and immediately thought it looked funny. I noticed that the whites look yellowish and overall the display is not as sharp. I went and compared at the verizon store and sure enough I'm right. The employee made note in my account I called 611 and they said that phone had the screen replaced and they would send me another and make sure the screen had not been replaced on it. Honestly if I had never seen or had the AMOLED it would be fine, even great, but after having one anything else is unacceptable. Hardware version is 0002. Is there any definitive way to check?

Hi guys,

I am expecting my Dinc in two days. Very much like you, I would like to find out if my dinc is amodel or lcd. For those curious souls, I suggest a simple experiment to test your screen.

Accorcding to the pdf posted in this thread, LCD power consumption is constant while amodel power consumption depends on the display content. Amodel(oled) consumes few power than lcd in most cases. When showing a white background, however, amodel consumes 330% power than lcd. If this is correct and sony's SLCD also has constant power consumption as the lcd described in the pdf, we would be able to see if our dinc is amodel or slcd by comparing battery drop when using a white vs. black background for few hours. White background should use significantly more power than black background. Of course you have to keep the screen always on and refrain yourself from playing with the phone while testing.

So, let us know if you have tried this.;)

Hardware Version 0002 doesn't mean anything.

I got my Incredible a day before launch and is also 0002.

That doesn't mean it has the LCD screen.

Fact still is the amoled display was a big part of the marketing push for the Inc. LCD diminishes one of it's key advantages. Factor in that Motorola is more diligent with substantial updates with the X, the non-rooting consumer may now be better off with the X. I prefer the Inc, but mine has amoled.

VZW can spin all they want, but, the Incredible is not really that with LCD. Super LCD is still a lamp backlit LCD.

added:

The more I think of this, the more it seems people that bought into the amoled as part of the lure to get the Inc will have grounds for another handset- if their amoled version fails and is replaced with lcd. The change is more than cosmetic and is a downgrade.
