Help DROID Incredible random restart/reboot problem

Just got off the phone with Verizon technical support.

Rep INSISTS.......it is an app problem....has sent instructions on backing up everything...either on google account or on sd card.

Then do a factory reset....and add no apps for a couple of days and see if the phone does the "power cycle". If not....add one or two apps...and wait and see if the "power cycle" problem returns....if not add another couple of apps. When (and if) the power cycle returns...it can be assumed the most recent app MIGHT be the cause.

Anyone else gone through this?

It's likely not an app problem. People have received brand new phones with no user apps installed that did the same thing. It seems to be an OS bug. Hopefully the upcoming over the air update will fix the problem. Your only other choice is to try a replacement phone - but others have found the same problem occurred with the new phone. If your reboots are infrequent, you may want to wait to see if the update fixes it. If you do a reset, let us know if the reboots stop.

I'm thinking that having my GPS enabled is rebooting the phone. While I'm traveling I have Pandora and Google maps running with my GPS enabled, I've always got Pandora running without any reboots and often have Maps without any reboots but I noticed the other day when the GPS is on I get random reboots, sometimes spaced out quite often or sometimes back-back.

I'm sure its the GPS vs any app because I had it restart, it loaded back up, and before I could unlock it and go into the menu it restarted itself agin.

What is causing this? I like having the GPS enabled when I am traveling, anyone know of a fix?

No affiliation, it is a software issue. VZW and HTC are aware of the problem and working to fix it. It was MUCH worse.

I talked to someone at Verizon and they said they never heard of it.

Is there any sort of an official release on the matter?

Either way...how does a software issue know when I'm in my house and cause the phone to reboot but every where else it's fine? That's the only thing buggin me.

When I spoke to VZW customer service they had no idea either. It was effecting the market I'm in really bad. Turned out when the rep I spoke to @ 611 called the local store in Greensboro NC he was "schooled" on the issue.

It has to do with signal strength, search these forums there are several threads, including one I started on release week.

For me the issue was so bad I was restarting every 30 seconds in some places. Since week one I have a random reboot here and there but nothing drastic. I know they are working to develop complete fix, but are not there yet.

Yea, I've been reading all the threads.

I'm in Cleveland. I'm from PA. My dad has the same phone and he's in the 400+ hours of Up Time. He went to a location where there is no signal and sat for half an hour and no reboots, still going strong.

I went home and did the same thing just to test it and had no problem.

Only time it has EVER rebooted is inside my house. We've always had problems here. Our old phones would always drop calls, so we got the network extender and never dropped a call again.

The extender has been unplugged for days, so it's not that affecting the phone.

I just don't understand how it's a network thing, an app thing, or any other thing VZW wants to blame it on.

Nothing knows I'm in my house and it's time to reboot. It baffles me.

My dad is driving out soon, a 3 hour drive one way, just to see if his phone starts to reboot while it's in my house. I'll lose my mind if that happens.

Wish I had a answer to give you........but, I'm willing to bet it will reboot. I know with my phone there is a spot I drive through were it will sometime reboot depending on battery level as well.

Who knows!

It's pretty crazy.

I love the phone otherwise. I talked to a VZW guy last week and he was supposed to call me back at a certain time, never did. 5 days later now and still no call. I might try to use that and all these problems to swindle me a free extended battery.

I don't suppose there is a way to get a history of what apps you installed and uninstalled from Android Market?...

If you join AppBrain they keep a record of all your apps you have installed bother there and on the Marketplace. Very Useful.

Also you can get App List on either there or AppBrain and that lists all your installed apps and keeps a backup list on your data card.

I am having a reboot issue as well however it is not a completely random issue though. It appears to only occur when I am running data intensive applications. Like when I am using the Verizon VCAST Streaming to watch the World Cup this past month and also if I am downloading some larger files from my SFTP server or a torrent.

Anyone else experience this in just these specific instances?

I have been having the same problem. It first started happening with v-cast video during the World cup. The signal would freeze and then the phone would reboot. It also happened today twice....once while listening to Slacker and the other time while using XM/Sirius.
It Is starting to concern me.

Had it happen a few times in the past couple weeks. Doing different things with the phone. I checked a txt message and the phone reset. I was playing a game and it reset. I was swiping through the screens and it reset. Anyone having similar experience? Not a big deal, just wondering what the issue was.

Do you mean rebooted?

If So, this is either a hardware defect (i.e., bad phone) or a software bug (i.e., problem with operating system or app). No one knows for sure yet. We are all hoping the over the air update coming out any day will fix it. However, most people have the reboot problem when they are not using the phone (while it's sleeping). Some have experienced rebooting while actually using the phone.

I think that it's unlikely that it's a memory issue as many people report reboots one after another. Others have reported that CSRs are blaming either low network signal or router problems. It sounds like a network issue to me. Supporting that is the number of people who receive replacement dincs and report reboot on the replacements, reboots in/leaving elevators, etc.
