Any chance we can use this thread for 3UK 2.1 update news, as per the thread title?
I sent a support request the other day asking for info, although it quotes up to 10 days to respond, so maybe I'll hear something by 2011.

Ooh news... "NOTHING HAPPENED". That's news, right?

We already thought it was coming in July. Does that make this news? OK so it was in a recent post by someone at 3, but it was nothing we didn't know already, does that make it news?

Call me old-fashioned but I don't think any of this is news.

OK my mistake i should not have used the word news. Would the words "sort of update" have suited you better?

I understand completely where you are coming from with your statements and couldnt agree more. But when there is so little information coming forward regarding the update for three then, in my opinion anyway, when any little insight or confirmation of status comes to light then it is a bonus. As such i thought i would share this "information" here with people that may or may not be interested in it.

Also i thought it may have been "news" worthy due to the semi form of admission that they are not giving it their all to get this this update out by the fact that they are "juggling" it with Galaxy S and other bits. THis would make for the increased time to get it out over other networks.

But I will now hold off posting anything regarding news that is not the latest and greatest breaking actual news and instead refrain from using that word and just post informal discussion or lite information. Thats when im not just trawling the posts and reading all the other news that everyone else posts.

Cheers

The latest news from the moderator over at 3's blog is "our update will come right at the end of this month. We’re going as fast as we can in the testing, but things have taken a little longer than anticipated."
"we’re working as hard as we can to get the update out as soon as possible. We are a smaller network and we don’t have endless resources, but we are making sure the Android update for Hero is up there amongst our other testing priorities."

from mid-july to before the end of july to very end of july, im doubting whether it will even be july or maybe august.

Hi, I was responsible for setting up the facbook campaign to get orange to release 2.1 to us. We got it today. We had nearly a 1000 members, and I honestly believe it was our campaign that made Orange deliver.

Chris Kennedy has now set up a similar campaign for 3 UK users. It's called:-

"
"3 UK - Give HTC Hero owners the 2.1 Update - NOW"

Please join. The link is shown below.

I wish Chris all the best with his Facebook group. Please join.

Hi everyone, just thought I would share a reply from Three to my e-mail:
Hi ------,

Thanks for your email about the Android Software 2.1 for your HTC phone.

I'm sorry but we don't have the updated version at the moment. We're working with HTC and hope to have this on our network soon. When we get it, we'll put details on out website Mobile phones, Mobile Broadband & SIMs from Three.

If we can help with anything else, please call us free on 333 from any Three phone or 0843 373 333 (5p/min from a BT landline, other networks may vary).

Thanks

@David – the update will be finally approved by our testing team this week, then HTC will push it out to Hero customers.

So take from that what you will. Shall be interesting seeing how likely this going to be for this month. But finger crossing and positive thoughts will get us through. LOL

Seriously guys why not just use this guide to get 2.1 on your phones (http://androidforums.com/htc-hero/112255-guide-beat-wait-2-1-branded-phones-uk.html) you're obviously sick of waiting and doing it this way you won't get the rubbish 3 branding all over the phone. As soon as I heard 2.1 was out I gave 3 a week or two to release it as I would have been happy to wait a little while for an "official" upgrade, but the general feeling was it was going to take another month or so before it was ready so on hearing that I used the guide and am glad I did, why keep getting annoyed when you can get it now??????

A great many users don't wish to futz around with unofficial methods. That's why separate topics were created for each of the "Official 2.1. Updates" as well as one on "How to beat the wait" by debranding/installing the generic 2.1 and the comprehensive sticky thread about rooting/installing custom ROMs. Like Android itself, this forum is all about choice. ;)

Couldn't agree more about it being a choice, but I do know that lots of people don't seem to know how to search forums and may well be unaware of the option to have 2.1 on their phones using this method, just offering up the information sir :)

Have to say I didn't really want to "mess about" upgrading my phone manually, however the wait for me personally was just a little too much and I couldn't see how I would gain anything from having a 3 branded rom (although I do understand your point that people like to do things the "official" way as it is) as opposed to the standard generic rom.

Looks like the update will NOT be coming in July after all. I here a lot of people leaving 3. Here's what the product manager, Brendan Arndt, had to say:

"Hi Guys

Thanks for all your patience regarding the 2.1 update for HTC Hero. We have now tested and approved the software and this has been submitted to Google to get the final go-ahead. We’re hoping that they can push this through as quickly as possible, but we’re not clear on the timescales for this yet.

Really sorry for the delay on this update. We’ve been working really hard to approve and launch lots of handsets and updates this month including iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S, and the 2.1 update for Hero has had to queue up alongside these other big launches, particularly the Galaxy S which took a number of versions of software to get right. We’re a smaller network than some of our competitors, and while that has its advantages it also means that our testing team doesn’t have limitless resources. We’ve done our best to manage priorities, but the 2.1 Hero update hasn’t gone through testing and approvals as quickly or as smoothly as we’d have wanted – HTC did have to supply us with a couple of versions until we were satisfied it was bug free. We really wanted to get this to you for the end of July, but we’ve missed our deadline – I’m really sorry I can’t bring you better news on a Friday afternoon but at least you’re now in full possession of the facts.

As soon as we know more from Google on their timescales we’ll let you know."

Why on earth does it have to be "submitted to Google?" Sounds like excuses to me...

*edit* - that's it for me - rooting this weekend now!

Perhaps maybe Google needs to approve the changes they've made?

I don't really understand all the outrage. It's not like, our phones aren't working right now. If you don't like it, root. Otherwise, you're going to have to wait. Complaining is seriously not going to help the cause at all.

I think it's refreshing that they've kept people updated.

depends on how you see it. If you see the 2.1 update as an added bonus, then obviously nothing to be frustrated about. But if you see it as a promised (which they did do) necessary update then you would be, especially seeing the official version being released over a month ago.
