Root soooo

I decided to root finally being that im competent enough to make my own icons / screen capture with sdk. soo. i have a few questions that arnt in any guides ive found.

1. Is there a way to keep my settings exactly how they are now...i.e. icons yada yada?

2. which is the safest most stable and less likely for me to blow up my phone ROM for the evo?

3. What is the best method to restoring factory defaults i.e. unroot?

some info.... ive read and understand

and unrevoked is not a ROM it is just a program to allow you to root your phone easier?

Not a pro at this, but I'm going to try and take a stab at some of your questions.

1. I personally use Titanium to back up my apps and system settings. Now you have to be careful with your system settings with custom ROM's...some work well with your settings and some don't. I used my same system settings when I went from a rooted stock ROM to Fresh 1.0.1 w/kernel #26 without any issues. One thing I have learned, is to back up using Astro as well for redundancy. Also, there are some app settings that you'll have to re-establish...like Ouick Desk and Quick Settings, if you use these apps. I also noticed I had to do this with Fast Web Installer as well. Overall, I was able to get my device running like I wanted in about 30mins.

2. I've only used 2 custom ROM's- Baked Snack v9.7 and my current is Fresh 1.0.1 with kernel #26. I've found that Fresh seems to work the best for me. I haven't had any real issues (outside of the account & sync issue, which is completely fixable) with Fresh and it is very stable. But, you have so many ROM's to choose from and ymmv when it comes to custom ROM's. So I suggest that you read, read, read, read and read.

3. Over at XDA, there is a RUU that you can use to get your device back to "out of the box" settings, unrooted and all. I personally would only do that, if you plan on returning the device for repair work or something else. Once you root, you'll never want to go back...at least I won't.

I used a guide I found on AndroidCentral.com and it was extremely easy to use. It's called [How To] Unroot and return to stock and it worked flawlessly when I used it after messing something up in the rooting process.

Yes, I used unrevoked 3 and it was very easy. I'm new to rooting and used the Newbie Friendly How To's w/ Instructional Videos so I could SEE how to do it.

Thanks alot. And what ROM doesnt have sync problems.. i use gmail alot and would rather not deal with those issues

^ Honestly, I think most ROM's don't have this issue. It has to do with the removal of certain Sprint apps like Friendstream, Peep, Stocks, News, and one more I can't remember. Removing NASCAR, football, Sprint Zone, and a few others won't affect anything. I know with Fresh, once I reinstalled the missing apps, my accounts & sync FC disappeared. Plus, Flipz indicated that in his change log and provides a folder of removed apps that the user can easily reinstall.

I really dont mind the extra apps. But wtf is NAND? and i start with rooting then backup? then i install the ROM right?

Backup first then root. If anything goes wrong you can recover everything with your backup file and your phone will be back to the way it was before you started rooting.

^You need to root first and then backup using a back up app...I like Titanium or you can use MyBackup. Rooting the device doesn't mean your installing a custom ROM, it just means you now have superuser (SU) permissions to do what you want.

This was pulled from PPC Geeks- First off, What is NAND?
To keep it simple...it's your phones internal memory.

I also know that with it completely unlocked, you can delete system apps. Remember that UR3 only unlocks the NAND to do its thing and then locks it back up. This is why using the UR3 method as a root method limits you. If you don't have any plans installing a custom ROM, UR3 will work just fine.

first you should back up your apps and settings?

use myback up from the market (its free for 30 days) you can back up your apps and user data (these are separate backups) titanium back up is only after you have rooted and you should switch to titanium after you have installed your new rom and have your setting re-installed. note: make a back up inside of launcher pro first and also make a settings save with folder organizer, then use mybackup. another note is if you are sincing your contacts with google already DO NOT back up your contacts with mybackup, no harm done it will just load your contacts in twice, its just not needed with google.

I tried simple root but could not find the extra's folder with the recovery. I did the first link you provided and the whole process took about 20 minutes.

no you can go look for a theme to give you that white taskbar. make sure the them is designed for your rom.

after rooting your phone will reboot as if it was stock. Now is the time for the nand back up. boot into recovery mode and make a back up (this will save you incase you get a boot loop on your rom install) boot loops happen because clearing your cache didn't work, you just got to do it again. search for nand back up instructions.

flash your rom, I recommend fresh or damage control, they seem to be the most complete for 2.1 android.

now go flash your radio's

no re-download myback up. retore your apps. restore your data. run launcher pro (may have to re-download) and restore your launcher pro back up.

you should now be where you were before you rooted

run all your apps and look for force closures, some data gets corrupted after backups. just the app not your settings tho. if you get any force closure re-stall the app. don't unistall, just go to the market and re-download the app it will install over and save your settings

you can now go look for themes to give you that white task bar, just make sure they are for your rom and correct version number.

simple root and that noob turtorial you linked will both use toasts methods part one and 2 and will fully unlock nand.
