I think I may feel better if there was a place we could just move threads, or copies of the threads, when less-than-positively-spirited-debates start to break out. I for one am certainly tired of having to debate forum etiquette.

Rob and I talked about it a while back and thought it might invite negativity and decided against it. But, it seems we're going to get it anyway so, let's hear some opinions on it.

- We could help keep the forums clean if when a little fight started just move the portion of that thread into said sub-forum, leaving the original thread to serve it's purpose. This would allow members to post all they want (to some degree obviously, no hard core hate posts) without them feeling censored.

- However it would invite/allow people to fight to their hearts contents and it may be hard for members to not let the hate spill out of the sub-forum and back into the regular area on future postings.

-Or would it?

Thoughts, ready go.

:p

Seems to me like you'd be making more work for yourselves? IMHO, people should be civil and respectful on the forum, and that goes for pretty much any location on the forum. If they can't, they need to stop, be stopped, or take it to PM's.

I'm not a guy who wants to stop all discussions and disagreements, some tension keeps the forum alive. However, when it gets mean-spirited, that helps no-one.

Well, Phases, you know how I tried to roll. :p

I vote no on Prop R. It does sound like more work.

I think we should just start deleting posts and infracting. If we see a history on users, then it might be time for that user to go on an androidforums vacation.

I used to be very active in sidekick forums and there were a lot of various types of people and the best thing done was: lock the thread when it was "reported". This was standard practice.

Then in order of severity and number of issues....

Sometimes remove the offending post.

Add a "warned member" tag to the username and track IP to prevent a re-register.

Suspend for a time and then finally ban.

It seemed to help a bit to understand the process and curb some behavior.

Why fight in threads. Everyone has their opinion ... some stronger than others. Get what you have to get out & move on.

Sounds great, in theory. Unfortunately, not everyone is that mature.

That sounds reasonable.

Heh. Cryptic's got a fast trigger finger ;)

The infraction system works very well on the two forums I use it on. Makes managing users very easy, and is great for keeping history. I've found that most folks don't get too much history, they either learn and stop being a pest, or they go off the deep end and get banned.

i dont really get what is meant here? surely the whole point of a forum is to gain knowledge from differant people taking on and taking in counter points and opinions. debate should be encouraged, personal attacks, trolling and stupidity should be punished. theres a massive differance and anyone too stupid to realise this, mod or poster, shouldn't own a g1. have i joined the wrong forum here??!!?

Maybe.

1. Don't go inferring stupidity, man. At least spell everything right if you're going to take that route.
2. What does owning a G1 have to do with it?
3. There is not always a massive difference. If there were, if it were that black and white, this poll wouldn't even be here.
4. I realize you're not a mod so you don't have to deal with deciding what to do about each individual little fight, who deserves what and then having to potentially deal with how the user/community/admin feels about your decision - so I'll let that one go. ;)

Thanks, Phases! I walked away. It was a similar situation to the last one I told you about. :p

I was typing a rather longer version of #1.

Agree with all 4.

It's not always a cut-and-dry situation with some off-topic posts. Sure, it's off-topic, but it doesn't always qualify as trolling. If we start looking at it in black-and-white, we'll have quite a few less users due to too strict of rules that we have to enforce to the letter, or we'll have chaos because we aren't being hard enough.

The 6-ish (I don't remember the exact count) of us generally discuss issues and the gray areas. However, finding a way to cut down on stupid stuff to spend quality mod time (you know...moving and merging posts. Geez! Can I use this as experience to become an editor for the St. Louis Post? That's what we do! :p).

I think dkaufman1's post is pretty close to ideal. Instead of locking a thread (unless the issues continue), we should just delete the bad posts. Keep the rest of his idea, though.

I think you would be opening yourselves up to more work also. I frequent a forum where this thing is somewhat allowed and its not often pretty. It seems you get a small handful of people that begin to use that as a way to just be hateful and condasending to others. (I know I spelled that wrong also) I dont have a cut and dry solution to this either. Though I do agree with some of the above posts stating that a warning should be given then whack them with the ban club if they do not heed the warning. But I also feel both should be handled in private. As an employer, I can see how this would be a very sticky situation for Phases and Rob and the other mods to be in needing to come down on a member. Good luck with whatever you decide. You will have my full support what ever way you go.

So should I ban you for this? According to you, punishment for trolling and flaming should be punished.

Sweet! Whatever we decide, we should put "This rule approved by Windchill." :p (humor, not sarcasm)

dude, a forum where the super mod says "punishment for trolling and flaming should be punished." is a forum I do not belong to. Not be an elitist prick, but please. You'd be doing us both a favour.

You said it.

You flamed (personal attack) me (and I'm guessing Phases).

I'm just sticking by what you said. Where's the confusion? According to what you said, you should be punished.
