here's just my personal experience:
I got my eris at the end of December, and went bananas when I first got it, installing apps like crazy - at one point I had over 75 third-party apps. One of them was a task killer, and throughout the day I would kill apps that I wasn't using that remained open.

I waited for the 2.1 OTA release, and after I did it, I noticed there was less available free space on the device than before the upgrade (it was reading around 108mb space used when all caches were cleared). The phone was lagging horribly, and I did a factory reset. After the reset, I reinstalled only about 6 or 7 apps. And I haven't used - or needed - a task killer since. I still get a full day out of a charge, without being OCD about killing apps. It turns out that a lot of the apps I had originally installed, I really didn't need. And one of them was a task killer.

Like I said at the beginning, that's just my personal experience.

Just ran a test on my buddy's new Eris. Launched a few apps until memory got down to the 30mb mark. The phone was toast. It lagged twice as much and I even noticed general interface navigation to be slower. We installed task killer app (the one with the red Android icon) and once we killed some apps memory went back up to 80mb and the phone lag was greatly reduced. Thats clear evidence for us. My friend is keeping the task killer app.

It works for some but others don't need it. I used one for awhile then uninstalled it, haven't noticed a difference in performance. When will this thread get closed?

Here's my little too cents...

I use task killers because my BB v0.4 Froyo OC 1.1ghz loaded with well over 100 apps and 30 mods (verified by ME trialing this 5 different times, 5 different days, 8 different roms) WILL run like SHIT without one...Now Linux is awesome but kiss my ass telling me MY phone (mine specifically) abso-freaking-lutely DOES NOT need a task killer. If I didn't, ATK, Adao, and TasKiller wouldn't have an ass load of downloads daily, nor would AutoKiller be popping up in dev'd roms.

Now I want one of you linux people to explain why on 5 DIFFERENT DAYS and 8 different roms I didn't run a task killers why my phone restarted, froze, locked up, ran slow, "reallocated" sluggishly, and half the time felt underclocked...WHEREAS when I put my task killer back on, it benched higher then a 2.2 Nexus One EASY and everytimetime...? Maybe your SUPER "I'm smarter than you" android phone actually has nothing major happening on it to the point you when you would need one, so you never "felt" you needed one.

No way this 400+ page flame is gonna unsell me on ATK's, I don't give a damn how many people bash the use of them. Enjoy your facts, I'll enjoy mine.

I understand how the task managers work, I actually prefer autokiller, it's just that android's version of linux's allocation process sucks for me because 30 megs = slow happens according to my tests and android doesn't seem to give me performance boosts on it's own. Btw, half the apps came from some of your best modders and developers, so my crappily made apps oddly are made I'm assuming by the same people who believe task killers are uneeded, right?

EDIT: I Apologize, I got a little heated because I'm not sold on the "un-need" of task killers...can someone tell me why, OH WHY, my phone whether factory reset or fully loaded runs worse without task management applcations instead of providing the linux jargen? I can understand the linux jargen but what cases would cause the jargen to be disproven as in my case? I REALLY need to know this for troubleshooting purposes.

It's putting octane booster into your Corolla and thinking it'll run a 9 second ET. It gives a slight bump in performance and prevents apps from staying open and robbing you of your battery life, but it doesn't hide the fact that there is too much going on for the phone to really handle efficiently.

Check this out - I can add some recent info to this thread.

I have used ATM (paid app - Advanced Task Manager, aron la) since 1.5.

I never used it as a automated "task killer", but more as a task switcher. That, and I would occasionally manually kill tasks. In 1.5 and 2.1, manually cleaning up tasks seemed to perceptibly improve responsiveness when the Eris reported free memory south of 35 Mb... above that, I'm not so sure.

Well, lately I've been swapping and discarding ROMs like they were kleenex, so that means that every time I flashed a new Froyo ROM, the automated (Froyo) market install dropped the latest version of my apps on the phone.

So, I fired up ATM the other day, and was greeted with this changelog message:

Version 4.1:
In Android 2.2, the SDK has been changed where terminating applications will not end the associated services and notifications. Currently it will only kill the application's immediate background processes. Due to this, I will be transforming and adding a number of functionalities over the next few weeks to make this app into more of a backup and application manager. I apologize for any inconvenience.

There you have it, from a developer who is intimately familiar with the APIs and process handling in Android, who was making money from selling a task manager/killer: he has concluded that the removal of certain APIs in Android 2.2 has effectively gutted the raison d'etre for his product - and that he needs to transform it into something besides a task manager for it to survive as a useful app.

This seems to jive with what Frisco reported in that other "smackydown" thread

Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming!

Erisuser1, yes the task/memory management in Android 2.2 works great now but this thread is about Android 1.5-2.1 not 2.2. Unless you root the Eris and load a 2.2 rom you still need a task killer app. There is no way around it.

Those of us who were running, back in the 1.5 and 2.1 OTA days, a "no-issue Eris" (read: "an Eris which left the factory in the condition it was meant to be in when it left the factory") know better than that.
