Droid Doesn't - Not Yet at Least! - VIDEO OUT

Ok, bought the Droid and LOVE it. Does everything I can ever ask for and more. I have used iPODs and iPhones quite a bit, done a ton of research, talked with everybody I know who ownes either phone, and chose the Droid. On the first day of use, I believe I found the one thing this phone cannot do - which might be a deal breaker for me...

It cannot connect to a television and play a darn movie.

You would think it is a really infrequent once-in-a-blue-moon trivial feature, but in this world of downloading full-length movies for plane rides, trips in the car, etc - you would think that once you have all those movies on your phone/computer, they would give you a way to watch it on the "big screen".

iPODs and iPhones do this through the 3.5mm jack. Droid can't. I have spent too much time reading blogs, forums and reviews. No luck. No info on whether this is a true hardware limitation, or just need an "app for that".

Am I the only one who would use this feature???

Even the media dock does not have a "video out" feature. Looked into that.

Please tell me there's a way to hook this phone up to a tv and play videos!

Then I guess you have never owned a vcr, dvd, or dvr. Welcome to 1975.... The droid gets beat by betamax.

TVs are here to stay, and have every imaginable way to plug stuff into them - component out, RF, composite, SVIDEO, HDMI... HMM, guess the motorola guys were asleep at the wheel here.

A deal breaker, seriously ??

In the 4 years that i've owned my zune, i've plugged it into my TV once and that was at a new years party for about 10 minutes.

In a world of DVR's and $200 netbooks, is it even really an issue ? What if you wanted to pause your movie, are you going to get off your couch and press pause ? God forbid a phone call comes in..

As far as streaming movies, i just use my xbox, and a media extender or Netflix on demand

As far as hardware, i can see no reason why this wouldn't work.. My old Dell Axim would do VGA out..

i don't think i would ever use this feature... but it would be nice to have anyway.

+1 here, and I've used iphone/tp2, etc.

but if he has a specific requirement that is not there, then android may not be right for him.

For those asking about "dealbreakers", I know of only 1 person that I know that loves to download movies on his device and play them on tv.

That's all. To each their own! I can't argue what they want to do with a device :)

I can say... I'd rather have the blueray disc and play on dedicated hardware, but that's just me, not the OP!

Some people travel.

Some people have stupid long commutes into work.

Some people have girlfriends that drag them halfway accross the state to go outlet shopping during playoff games.

Some of those people have SlingBoxes and in-dash NAV units that have TV-In connections.

Very nice! That supports exactly what I was saying..... wait a jerk minute....

If you have a long commute into work, how is a tv out helping you?

How is a tv out helping you when shopping at the mall?

hmmmmmm

I use my iPod alot to watch movies I (pay for and) download via the internet on my plasma. or my buddies 12 in black and white. or the 8in dvd in the truck, which the kids watch, none of them fighting.

If I bought an iPhone, the iPod goes away. So would the Krazr cell phone.

2 devices down to 1.

You may want to look at the Touch Pro 2 or Nokia N900 (out at end of month). Droid won't have it, if nothing else but for the Pin-out configuration. TP2 has an 11pin USB port...Droid has 5.

And.. ??
Composite video requires 2..
A usb webcam (with audio and video and power for the device) has 4 connectors right ??

I don't watch movies on the way to work - I have an 8 minute commute.

I am just pointing out the very simple fact that iPods and iPhones have this feature, which I use alot to play all those movies they want to sell you - on a tv.

I assume you use that 32 gig of space for something other than music. I assume you have friends. SOOOO, if you like to watch movies with a few other people, HOW WOULD YOU DO IT ON THE DROID?????

THat was towards colnago. How do you use a tv out in that scenario where there's no tv, unless I'm missing something.

If I had a movie on the droid, I'd watch it on the droid. Most of my source movies are on disc.

I did say above that I can see where people are coming from though, especially you! I just don't have a need for a tv out personally.

Actually I can understand that. I don't have extra cash to throw on a 200 netbook. I have my ipod touch and my modded xbox. When I watch video podcasts at my girls house cause she doesn't get any cable it the ipod that gets hooked up. I still don't mind taking that thing around with me, but it has its own set of cables and plugs. And with me constantly useing the net or some other thing on this phone when it has the capability of holding the content. I would like to carry around only 1 device and set of cables if I ccan.

Finally. Some form of intelligence. iPHONE DOES THIS GUYS!!!!! WAKE UP!!!! PEOPLE WANT TO DO THIS!!!
well... i'm not sure it's a matter of intelligence. personally, i just would never use my phone to watch movies on a big screen. i would use my laptop, dvd player, etc etc. the only time i might watch a movie on my phone is on a flight or something. but even then, i'd likely use my laptop. video-wise, i guess i would use my phone-camera to take short clips of friends, vacations, and such, and then show them on my phone. i mean yeah, i'm for any kind of cool feature i can get... how about a radio on the droid, or a way to connect/broadcast/stream movies wirelessly to/from my networked computer? i can think of a ton of features that i'd like. but this is one i doubt i'd ever use.

having said that, if this is something you need, then it's something you need. and i'm sure you're not alone. all i can say is that the droid can't do this. it is physically incapable of it. wadaya gonna do, ya know? :\ if you really need it, then clearly the droid isn't the phone for you.

as an aside, i encoded some movies to play on my droid just for the techno-thrill of it, and i gotta say they look amazing on the droid's screen!

So, by shouting on a forum is going to make your video out turn on ?
Iphone does 480i.. wow.. Seriously, you plug a iphone into a 12" b/w tv ?

I'm sorry, i'm probably showing my age here, but i can live 30 minutes without the entirety of recorded music or watching a video..

And to answer your earlier question "if you and your buds wanted to watch a video, how would you do it on a droid" Well, if my friends were too cheap to have an xbox, laptop, dvr.. I'd probably tell my friends moms to buy them one.. I would however control my media pc via my droid, just for kicks...

my $0.02 if it's really that big of a deal, get rid of the droid, get an iphone, then troll some apple forums

Again, it's a requirement for a few people. I personally do not require this.

There are plenty of HTC options that do this without you locking yourself into encrypted itune store (expensive) purchases.

iphone also has non-working alarm clock and gimp mode, those are core features that my droid does well!

To each their own, there will be people on all 4 sides of the square of popular phone OS's, and there will be pros and cons.

Did you know the droid has an external antenna jack? That's VERY exciting, especially on the VZ network!

THIS!

If an ipod is your only form of entertainment playing, there's something wrong in that picture.

I'm not discounting that tv-out would be very nice though. I would just NEVER use it. I have dvd/bluray players that go much better with my large tv. I'd rather GTG with friends and put a bluray in to take advantage of the resolution of the tv.

Some people like tv playback for presentations. I say.... WTF are you doing with your company laptop :)

Droid is not a phone. It has a more processing power and memory than a home pc sold 7 years ago. It's a handheld computer.

hmm.. my contract said phone.. I do agree it is a computer that just happens to make phone calls.. However, back in 2001 my AMD XP chip clocked in at 1.53 ghz.. (oh, and that was 8 years ago)

To keep things in perspective, in 2006 my Dell PDA was doing 624mhz

Ok, it would be nice to be able to just have a cable that plugs into the TV and plays videos, I can't think of ONE place that I would do this, but sure, it would be nice.

Where are you plugging in your ipod/itouch/iphone that you NEED this extra screen size that it wouldn't be available?

Don't tell me travel, I travel, and did for a few years, 9 out 10 of the hotels don't have the ability to let you plug into the TV with anything. I just don't see the practical application in this. Either that or, I have nothing that desperately needs watched at someone's house that doesn't have a computer/xbox/ps3 that I could just stream off the droid anyway with the USB cable.
