Put my EVO to work today and I was amazed.

I live in California and it is illegal here as well, but I see a lot of people still talking and texting while driving and doing stupid dangerous shit.

tell me about it, down here in miami you have people doing hair and eating in the car at the same time, its horrible, i always shake my head when i see someone texting while driving and even worse when your in the car with the driver doing it, stuff like that pisses me off, and no offense but i truly think some people were just programmed to die for stupid actions, you see people dying left and right for doing it but yet they shrug it off as if they cant be touched...and then its to late.

Maybe you did, but you just didn't see the near-accident b/c the other driver was already in the ditch by the time you looked up from the phone:p

Seriously though, these laws are not made and put into place b/c every single driver is a problem. They are put into place because many or most drivers are incapable of multitasking (depending on where you are driving, the NEED for attention on the road is different, ex. open freeway vs Raleigh NC traffic), and the costs associated with mistakes while texting are FAR greater than implementing/enforcing the law.

And even if many people haven't had near-accidents, I can't tell you how many times over the past two years that I have had to lay down on my car horn because the light turned green and the person in front of me just sat there.... and may have never looked up on their own!

In fact, 4 days ago that happened when trying to make a left turn at a light. The woman in the car in front of me (she was about 4or5 cars back) had her head down. The light turned green and the cars all pulled out from in front of her, and she didn't move... So I laid on the horn, then after a 2-3 second delay she hits the gas and runs straight out through the yellow light while flipping ME off!! I'm just left there thinking WTF!? The funny thing is, I think I remember seeing something like that in a movie... I think it was a Bruce Willis flick.

Anyways, hands and eyes free would be pretty sweet if it were a little more practical, but you just can't trust anyone else when it comes to regular texting and driving. Personally, I'm happy to give up texting while driving if it means that, if the woman in front of me had been caught, she would have been punished to the equivalent of a DUI. But I'm still looking into practical hands free and TTS and STT... though the best I have found is an app that does TTS (so I immediately get the message) and sends an auto-response letting the other person know that I am driving and if they need me to respond that they can call.:)

Obviously the death/accident ratio isn't high enough yet to be implemented nationwide.

Do you also drive better after a few beers?

The way you worded your reply made me think of that idiocy...I truly hope you don't fall into both categories.

I don't drink and drive. Thanks for your concern though.

so when would there ever be a good time to text and drive ( i would think never ) , granted I do it but i still know if im not carefull i would be in someones rear in a split second, so i got into the habit of just pulling over if i need to text someone right back immediately

I could think of quite a few times it'd be really good to text and drive.

For those that text and drive - at the very LEAST use speech to text.

I do sometimes, but most of the time it's not accurate enough. I use swype when i'm texting/driving now a days.

If you think you can look at a phone and type a message while still paying adequate attention to what's going on around you, then you have no freakin' clue what your limits are. You may get away with it for 20 years, until some kid on a bicycle comes riding out of a parking lot or driveway and you're just that 1/2 second too late noticing her.

Grow up before you kill someone. There's no text message that's so important it can't wait until a traffic light, or you get where you're going. Unless you're name is Obama, that is.

I know exactly what my limits are and what i'm capable of. Thanks for your concern though.

Sorry bout your luck. Glad you're okay.

To this one... I wonder if you shake your head the same way when you see a cop driving and playing on his nice little lappytop running some plates while driving too.

All of your general concern is nice and all... but you have to realize, just because the dornknob that happens to cause a wreck because he DOESN'T know his limits, doesn't mean I don't know my limits. I have my own rules / limitations I put on myself when driving to ensure my safety and the safety of others. Fact of the matter is, I know when I can text safely, and when I cannot. I am so very sorry if you don't like it. It's just the way it is... and i'll continue to do so.

Please, continue to hate on me for doing it, and calling me stupid... but having me text on the road is a HELL of a lot safer than say; guns in the hands of irresponsible people, drunk drivers, drugs etc etc......

Thanks again, for your concern.... I really mean that, but it's not needed.

Chastise me all you want flame away if that's what will put you to sleep at night!

And I thank you for that.

I truly hope your first problem from texting and driving is something simple like hitting a curb. You are fully right that there are many worse things out there. I just don't personally see the need to add to the list with my own hands, so I don't. Even if you truly are in full control of your driving, your reaction time IS slower, and your attention IS affected. What if you don't avoid that drunk running a light because you are split focused on a text and the cars in front and next to you?

I don't know you, but I also don't want harm coming to you. If you are as invincible as I used to be, you'll probably laugh this message off. It's ok with me.

This message is brought to you by someone who has sent THOUSANDS of texts while driving and stopped two years ago.

I txt, facebook, etc on my drive home from work everyday. Of course this is in bumper to bumper traffic where we're going 0-5 mph. So I think its dumb that I could get a ticket for my non-dangerous txt'ing. People need to use some common sense & I'm tired of the government telling me what that is. For example, on a recent drive home I posted this pic to Facebook:

I'm pretty sure I can safely txt at 3.3 mph. :D

When the government tells me how to act in an effort to protect me, I don't really like it.

When the government tells you how to act in an effort to protect me, I don't have a problem with it.

In a perfect world, we would be governed by nothing more than common sense. Unfortunately, we have a bunch of little Oriduses out there, necessitating such laws.

No problem, but life is funny and can teach you lessons you may know your limits but others dont, no matter how safe you are someones is always gonna be on your path whether you survive or not its up to the big man upstairs, what im saying is you maybe 100% sure you wont crash while texting while driving but there might be something out there that will change your life.

Not sure why you're rolling your eyes. It should be illegal to do that everywhere.

And if it's not illegal, it's still stupid!

Well, i've been doing it for almost 10 years now. I know my limits. At least I can ride up next to a cop and text to my hearts content and not get fined ^_^.

Yes, I'm takling about you Oridus!

I was using Sprint Navigation in one city (Kansas City), but when driving in another city (Orlando), I noticed that the Sprint server was laggy and even timed out, so I switched to google navigation and it worked perfectly. It is so nice to have options when it comes to reliable, quality navigation on a phone!

That said, when I was playing music and using Google Navigation at the same time, I would get an occasional phone call. The EVO did not like that and would usually reset in the middle of the call.

I find Google nav to be far superior to sprint.. but to each his own.

Technically, it is. As far as I know it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle in an unsafe manner in any jurisdiction. I think texting/surfing while driving would fall in that category. I just don't know why this is not enforced.

There shouldn't be a need for additional laws against texting and driving.

I would rather take on a drunk driver than a texter... at least they are keeping their eyes on the road in all likelihood and trying to drive. I am not sure I agree with your irresponsible gun people statement either. You are being just as irresponsible as they are. Your car makes a mighty big bullet. I will not call you stupid but I think your view is very immature and short sighted. It is people texting and driving that has scared me off from riding a bike on public roads. Too many people are doing everything other than driving while behind the wheel of a car.

He is an Idiocy.
It is proven, when your not thinking about operating your vehicle on the road, the conditions, and other vehicles on the road, your brain does not recognize all hazards.
He is the perfect example of a guy that ends up causing a fatality and then says, "Wasn't my fault, I didn't see him"

Anyone who uses a cell while driving and texts while driving is a TOTAL ASS WIPE that has no regard for other people's safety.
