Help Possible Battery Fix from HTC

What your saying would be true had HTC NOT had the link w/ instructions available.

Um, the link was exposed by non-HTC folks (the link was meant for a select group of people and was exposed to them with the instructions to not hand it out) and HTC made official statements that this was NOT the final update and to not use it for the general public.

(Full disclosure... I downloaded and installed it, but I don't like facts getting screwed up).

Same. Just restarted the Evo. Turned the screen off for a quick bit.

Up Time: 4:06
Awake Time: 2:28

Update:

Uptime 1:06
Awake Time: 1:05

Dam -_-. Screen was off and I was distracted doing photoshop stuff. Think it could be launcher pro? Also my battery meter is still at 2 bars remaining to be charged, been charging all this time -_-. But there is an update for launcherpro in my market. Thing is I don't like updating when they don't have ads...because most updates just add ads.

Thats right after a reboot right? If so that looks normal (see my first check in). Give it an hour (without touching it if you can, screen off) and then check back in.

ok, my final check in. Has been about 2 hours total since reboot. I have had background data and auto sync back on for those 2 hours. (had them off for 1 hour before the reboot)

Starting stats.
Uptime: 00:1:55 min
Awake: 00:1:55 min
Battery: 65%
Time: 11:18 pm

Finishing stats:
Uptime: 01:51:40
Awake: 00:13:45
Battery: 52%
Time: 01:07 am

So looks like I am averaging about 7min awake time per hour now. And about 6-7% battery usage idle per hour (in constant roaming)

So ive had a battery decline like alot of others with the RC. I had been getting about 1.2% battery per hour on average of a week or so watching it under light/moderate use. After first installing Froyo it went up to about 1.8% battery per hour on IDLE doing almost nothing. I removed the LED Light app (not that I need it with the flashlight anymore) and switched the radio to GSM and back to CDMA as I think EarlyMon suggested - I just got 1h45min exactly, before it dropped to 99%. Making it around .7% battery per hour, AMEN! I did do a battery pull after removing the app and switching radios just to be on the safe side, hope this helps for some people!

*Oh, and also went into Google Talk - and had to set that not to auto start with the phone, AND sign it out. Thanks given to both who gave these suggestions!

Ok this is the third time I've seen something about LED light app, removing it fixes the battery, or makes battery performance better. What's the exact name? I have LED Desire Light...

Now, I didnt exactly say the app "LED Light" was what made the difference - it was just suggested, and as much as I try to single things out, after tweaking it all day it was an extra thing I was willing to try, since the new flashlight app with 3 brightness settings is much better, just imo. But its name is, just "LED Light". I personally belive the radio SAID CDMA but, really wasnt. And obviously G Talk wasnt helping things.

<3 Froyo so far now that my battery life is back, and better!

I do an uninstall on it just to rule it out. LED light app has been mentioned before as a program that will keep the phone awake. Might not be the one you have, but at least you can rule it out, and just reinstall if it isn't the case.

Ok, 90 minutes unplugged, only 3% drained, so it looks like things may be looking up. Shut down, pulled the battery, booted back up, removed the LED Light app, changed Google Talk to not automatically login, turned syncing off for a few hours and then turned back on, and whether it's a coincidence or not, it's not even close to the 15% an hour I had earlier today. Whew!

Edit: 9 1/2 hours unplugged, 82% left. Of course 7 hours of that was while I slept, but this is a huge relief after the 6 hour drain of yesterday, when I didn't touch the phone at all (except to check the battery level with panic). Again, whew!

Let's see if we can remove the guesswork here.

If you don't have these, kindly get them free from the Market:
  • SystemPanel Lite
  • Android System Info

Here's my intended procedure:

  1. Lauch Android System Info, go to the Tasks tab, Menu-> Sort by CPU - Home key
  2. Launch SystemPanel Lite, click on the three pie charts up top
  3. Just leave phone idling, with that screen, and keep an eye on Network and CPU
  4. Maybe give it some time, see if you're seeing anything that just stikes you wrong for lots of CPU use or network traffic
  5. Long press on Home key, choose Android System Info, and see what process is offending
  6. Failing that, choose the Logs tab, save logs and look them over for anything unusual

Note that SystemPanel Lite - with a back key - will give back your full list of processes - and you can tap on any of those for LOTs of process details.

If you're suspicious about any app, go to the Android System Info Applications tab and tap it - it will show you every flag that permits an app to do anything of interest (begins with FLAG_).

Report back and I'll help as much as possible.

Well on system panel, CPU Activity is constantly 550MHz-700MHz+. Not sure if that's normal since I have the screen on and the app is running in view. Network I don't really see any transferring going on. My battery is STILL at 67%, 3 bars needing to charge. Been charging since 6 or 7 PM, and its now going on 4AM. Ridiculous -_-.

Back in the Android System Info, "android.process.acore" there's 2 copies of it, are both 100% CPU all the time. Although the Total CPU Load is around 5%. Wat's really annoying is the fact you close out all these apps, and they instantly load right back up. Windows mobile never did that.

WTF? With separate Process IDs? Are you running another launcher besides the stock one?

Did you have any issues during the installation process?

Have you done a factory reset?

Did you install a separate Flash at any time?

Do both/either associate with the com.android.htcdialer package?

The only way I've heard of for a.p.acore to go to 100% all the time is when you have it in an infinite loop.

The only way I've heard of having two a.p.acore procs is with a non-stock launcher.

Have you looked for error entries in your log files using aLogcat? You can do that by filtering for "E/" after pausing the log.

Please advise.

Well after some trials it seems that the HTC clock widget was causing my awake time issue. After I killed it via system panel, my up time/awake time ratio is MUCH better.

2:03:37 Up
0:24:20 Awake

Before I killed the clock it was pretty much a 1:1 ratio. Not sure why this would be the cause but maybe there are different triggers for each phone and this happened to be mine.

Exactly. htc did NOT publicize the link. Bloggers and forum posters with zero connection to htc did it, without bothering to check with htc first. The only public statement htc has made about this update version is NOT to install it.

htc liability = zero

Indeed. They have zero liability, but i'm not convinced that's why they did it. I think they did it because it was made public and Sprint doesn't want people downloading before they officially release it to the masses. I'm pretty sure the release on Friday wasn't called a beta release anywhere in the statements, so they probably aren't looking for things to actually change in 2.2. And who releases a version to "test" so close to the official release date.

I think this version is the final, but that's just my take on it. They very well could make changes before Tuesday. Doubtful though

Sorry for the delay.

The Process ID's are the same. Just 2 exact copies.

Yes I already mentioned I'm using Launcherpro. I also asked in a previous post if that's what could be causing it.

I've had no issues installing, except right at the beginning I got an "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command" Like this guys screen-shot:

http://androidforums.com/1270022-post715.html

Only with mine everything else was fine and installed smoothly, took less than 15 mins.

Have not done a Factory reset. I have a lot of customizations right now, If I have to as a last resort then I will.

Never installed any other flashes, Bought the Evo, stayed that way till the 2.2. I did have launcherpro before as well, but had no problems though.

Not sure how to find the htcdialer package, but When I expand the android.process.acore I get:

Process ID: 435
User ID: 10114
Status: Background
Package: com.fede.launcher (Which is prob. the htcdialer you're asking.)
Same with the other android.process.acore.

have not tried aLogcat.

Recap:

  • Toggle background data on/off - give it an hour off
  • Reset CDMA with Network app: toggle it GSM auto (PRL), exit, then restart and set it to CDMA auto (PRL)
  • Update PRL
  • If still having trouble check your log files with aLogcat to see if you have a rogue app or some app conflicts.
  • Check your browser history - is anything accessing the web you didn't know about before?

Froyo isn't creating new problems - but it IS exposing underlying ones that were there before - in my point of view.

Another quick note - if your camera isn't working or if you're still have battery problems, either kill or uninstall LED Light.

Hope this helps.

PS - How to deal with checking logs here:

http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/137494-official-unrevoked-developers-have-froyo-evo-7.html#post1270183
So I checked my logs and noticed the constant E/lights error constantly popping up. what does that mean?
