Should I get the Nexus One?

I currently have an iPhone 3G but ever since upgrading to iOS 4, it's been garbage. I'm pretty frustrated with Apple and I am now considering an Android phone.
Even though the Nexus One is no longer available from Google, should I still get one?
My main concern is whether or not it will be supported for at least another 1.5 years. Will it get Android 3.0? I don't want to invest $600+ and get a phone that will only last me until Christmas.
Are there any other Android phones that you would suggest for me? I am an average user, don't need anything too fancy, but I need it to be an unlocked GSM phone able to work in Canada on the Rogers/Fido network (I believe it's 3G 850/1900).
I am also skeptical about getting other phones because of the carrier modified OS (like senseUI, touchwiz). If anyone suggests a phone other than the N1, could you also shed some light on the OS modifications.
Also, should I just be patient and wait for Android 3.0? Any good phones coming soon that are worth the wait?

edit: I will be travelling to Italy in September so I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get the phone from Vodafone and bring it over to Canada. Would it work? Is this a wise move?

I have the Nexus One and I like it. I believe the rumored requirements for OS 3.0 are sufficient for the Nexus one, so its highly unlikely that google would decide to pass 3.0 on the Nexus One (it is google's phone). So if you do want to get it, go for it. However, I would also suggest you look at other Android phones. The samsung galaxy s (Captivate in the states), has a comparable processor and more on-board memory, so you might want to look into that. Just make sure you get an android phone with a 1GHz processor.

If you get the nexus one from Vodafone, the 3G wont work in Canada. So you're better off buying the ATT version online.

I am considering the Samsung Galaxy S, the only thing I'm concerned about is the touchwiz 3.0.
Any comments on touchwiz?

I haven't tested the Galaxy S, so I really can't comment on that. you could google and look for some screenshots/videos.

Nexus will most definitely get Android 3.0. It will be the first phone to have it actualy.

Galaxy S and Captivate are almost the same phones. Touchwiz is on all of Galaxy S phones. I would advise against Galaxy S phones untill they officialy get Android 2.2 in september. And if Samsung fixes all the bugs in 2.2... then I'll advise of buying it.

I myself as a owner of the N1.. won't be changing my phone until some firm starts putting vanilla android on easy rootable unlocked phone. So maybe never lol

When buying phone abroad you must know what to buy. IF you buy a phone that has the wrong radio for your carrier you're screwed and you won't be able to make calls. You have to make sure the phone uses the same frequencies as your carrier does.

Android 3.0 is due at the end of this year. you should wait with buying your phone untill then. There will probably be some great ones comming soon.

from what I've been researching, the custom UIs don't really seem to be any good.
which manufacturer doesn't use custom UIs and ships unlocked phones with the vanilla android? the only vanilla android phone I've found that' has decent specs is the Nexus One.

N1 is the only phone on vanilla with 1ghz processor spec. And it will remain like that because of the stupid manufacturers... hope that 3.0 will fix all this things.

If I didn't get the nexus one, I would have gone with the captivate, though I would have hacked it to bits and installed the vanilla android on it. I did hear a few people say that the captivate felt a little cheapy, and I have to say that the nexus one is the most solid phone I've had so far. I also heard the 3.0 requirements rumors were more of recommendations than hard requirements, so I would think that most phones that came out this year shouldn't have a problem running the new version.

The nexus has superb build quality and materials, better than any other android phone out there by far. It's on par with iPhone in terms of solid feel. Plus it has vanilla android which is a must for me, and its such an open and hackable phone. Nexus to me will remain the best android phone out there for the foreseeable future considering the whole package. Plus it gets updates right from Google, has the colored trackball, amoled screen, etc its the best in my opinion no question. It will be the Most future proof, and It's like a collectors item phone in a way.

The only problem now is trying to actually buy the Nexus One? Anyone have some recommendations on where to get a new Nexus One in Toronto for ATT/Rogers/Fido, other then craigslist/kijiji?

nexus 1 is the only phone that is pretty much garuanteed to get 3.0 since its straight from google.

i heard you can pay 10 dollars and set up an account as a developer and still order the N1 from google. i havent looked into it since i already have one and dont need to worry about it. or you could always get one from ebay or some website. just make sure you look into it and trust where you are getting it from.

i checked the android dev site and it costs $25 to signup, but there is no indication of whether or not i can purchase a nexus one after registering. can any confirm this?
