Official 4G/WiMAX Coverage Areas

i was in vegas last week and the 4g was awful. it would keep disconnecting even while i was outdoors to the point i just turned it off for the duration of my trip. when it did actually work it wasn't that fast either, disappointing to say the least.

it's a finiky technology to be sure. its good if you can get a solid signal without moving. in a car, on train, etc, its pretty useless.

Grand Rapids is a head scratcher. They must only need one tower to cover the city.

Grand Rapids got 4g because the city choose Clear as the company to install their wireless:

The City's primary goal for this project is to enhance public safety by dramatically increasing the information available to mobile police officers and firefighters. Clearwire’s progress had been impeded by litigation initiated by a local cellular company. A purchase agreement was announced and approved the end of 2009 opening the door for Clearwire to complete and launch their state-of-the-art 4G network in Grand Rapids.

So it was not a marketing decision by Sprint/Clear as to rolling out 4g, but more of a happy co-incidence for us who can use the 4g.

When I was at Best Buy picking up my Evo, the guy next to me picking one up as well mentioned that he knew where there was a 4G signal in the Minneapolis area. He said it was the sole location and I am guessing it is a Test location of some sort. He couldn't reveal the location because he said he was under an NDA. (I told him he should anonymously geo-tag it so that we can all enjoy :D -- he was mean and didn't seem amused and said that would probably violate the NDA...jerk)

My best guesses are some sort of important business area, or government building, but I have no idea where to even begin.

My question is for anyone that might have any good ideas. Where could this location be? Where are the typical test areas in these pre-4G cities?

I happened to stumble on a 4G area by accident. I forgot I had left the 4G scan on and it showed up while I was watching my kid's softball game by Northtown Cub Foods in Blaine. I got 1 bar on it. :D Unfortunately, I live outside of this area so no 4G for me yet.

July 4th I was at a club on 10th and Broadway and I was using my Sprint Overdrive to use Ustream on my HTC Hero. I used the Overdrive because the WiFi is sometimes faster than the sprint network. All of a sudden Ustream on my phone said "reconnecting" That rarely happens. So I look at my Overdrive and it says 4G. The overdrive didn't connect to give 4G signal but it said connected and it stayed connected for about 3min until I restarted my overdrive because I was doing filming. Just a few days ago at my home (N. Cherry Creek area) for a brief moment my overdrive was saying "Connecting 4G" and that NEVER happened as long as I had this overdrive. So now it's making me think because the 3G network on my Hero was in and out for a few days around May/June 2010. I even restored my phone and it still did it for a bit, then after a few days the 3G signal held up back to normal when I listen to internet radio in the car from my hero. Next time my overdrive reads 4G, I'll try to take a picture to show you. I heard that 4G should be in Denver September/October 2010.

Hello everyone. First post here.

I just had some questions about my 4G speeds in Austin.
I live at the intersection of Lamar and Parmer, and I am literally in the middle of thee towers - each no farther than a few thousand feet from my door, yet my signal strength drops out to as low as 2-3 kbps....and that's several times a day too, whether i am in my apartment or on the sidewalk. My low for the day is usually around 10-15 kbps.

This is not all the time though, since I have actually seen speeds of almost 3Mbps even with my apartment at my desk. These short bursts of speed usually last around 10 - 12 minutes, and then plummet down to 250- 300 kbps or slower.

What i found strange is that when I ran several tests near two of these towers, I couldn't break 3Mbps.

At one of the three towers surrounding where i live, I ran a series of 3 tests and came up with less than 2 Mbps, even though I was within two hundred yards of the tower( s )
( There are actually two small towers side by side near Westview Middle Schools football field. )

I took back my first Evo, thinking something was wrong with the phone, but now my replacement Evo gives the same results.

I have seen short bursts of speeds of over 4+ Mbps with an average of no lower than 2.5 Mbps on my phone while in the parking lot of the Parmer / I-35 H.E.B. , but I ran a series 12 tests on the same tower from the North and West side of the tower and couldn't break 3 Mbps. ( Avg. of around 1.7 Mbps )
This was done within 200 yards of the tower in an open field on a clear day.

Just curious if this sort of signal variation is normal, or if there is something screwwy with the towers ?

One more thing I found odd is that despite having full bars and two rings, i see around 600 kbps on 4G. Other times i can have two bars and no rings with speeds of over 2Mbps.

Do the strength bars and rings really mean anything, or is there some other factor that varies the strength ?

I hope I don't come off as whining about any of this. I mainly curious :)

Thanks everyone !

I forgot to mention : I'm using a EVO 4G.
As far as updates and such, I'm currently updating, so we'll see if Frodo 2.2 will help any.

Update : Well I just did a test with 2.2 and first results gave a reading of 0.03 Mbps .... however
I just got 4G signal.

My first reading 5.27 Mbps !

Signal fluctuates between 1.25 - over 3.5 Mbps on 4G now, but still really drops once 3G kicks in .

Just tried 4G at Disneyland yesterday and got nothing as well. Not sure I believe these rumors of it around this area because I am not getting it anywhere around Anaheim. It constantly says scanning....

Since it's not "live" yet, it's possible they've turned it off for tweaking. One thing I've noticed about my 4G signal is that buildings interfere quite badly with the signal. I have to hold my phone up and away sometimes to connect to a far away transmitter.

I work in Westwood and get a very strong signal. Though the wierd thing is I only do when I'm on the 2nd floor parking level. If I go down to the street I get about half the strength and then a very weak signal inside the office. But I get to enjoy the blazing fast speeds of 4g when I'm on a smoke break. When I do get a strong signal some sites I go to have absolutely no loading time at all. But other sites still load a great deal faster then regular. I live in the San Fernando Valley area (Northridge) and get no signal there.
