Inserting a new SD card

Apologies guys but this may seem very obvious to you all but I just wanted to check before I went ahead with it.

I've had my HTC Hero about three weeks now (and I love it!

) and have bought a Micro SDHC 8gb card for it as I want to store music on it. It arrived today and I was just wondering whether I need to do anything before I remove and switch memory sticks? I have the current 2GB memory stick in there which was provided and I've saved a few images on there but I'm not bothered about trying to save them and put them on my new stick. Is it just fine to go and switch or is there something I need to do?

If you're running stock there shouldn't be much on there. Some apps save data on the SD card so you might want to just copy the contents of your current card onto the new one. If you don't really care (i.e. free apps), you can just put in the new card and re-install the apps if any suddenly stop working.

Thanks for the response! Yeah I haven't fiddled around with it much so I'm copying the music onto new card now.

I did notice that I don't have the DCIM folders on my memory stick or the MP3 folder. I added the MP3 folder but not DCIM. When I take pictures whilst my new card is in there will it automatically create a DCIM folder? I haven't taken any pictures on my new card yet/

Hi

I just put a 4gig card straight in mine with no probs and it created its own
DCIM folder.
The only prob I have come across is the 2 gig one that you get with it has the sinc application on it and the user manual.
I put the original one back in the phone and copoied it to the computer then put the 4 gig back in. So maybe copy these things before you change just to save the time.

Whatever app you use will create any folder it needs to save the files. It doesn't really matter which folders your media is in though. Android will scan your entire card and display all the media it finds. This can be annoying when game mp3's start appearing in the music player and images start appearing in your gallery or photo viewer. You can stick a .nomedia file in those folders to prevent this.

Actually, android doesn't treat all media equally. I have folders called 'mp3', 'ringtones', 'notifications' and 'alarms' to make sure things end up in the right place.

sooo if you create these files on your SD card, like the MP3 and notofications does the phone automaticaly know where to put things or is it the phone that creates these folders?

I made the folders, android interprets them

Oh and turns out my music folder is just called 'music', not 'mp3'.

Thanks guys. I did just insert the memory stick straight in although as natnat suggested I copied the HTC Sync file off the provided 2gb card onto my computer.

However, I bought the stick off eBay (always a bad idea I know but I'm scabby!) and when putting music on there I had a lot of problems like not all the copied files coming up on my player and then one minute it said I had 456 songs on there and then it said 280 etc.

Hopefully it was just a dodgy/fake Sandisk stick (it didn't come in any retail packaging). I have returned it and have since ordered for the same price the stick off Play.com where people left reviews saying it worked perfectly (including on HTC Hero). I hope it was just a dodgy stick and my new one will work and it's not a problem with the phone!

Yeah, it's very easy to buy a dodgy SD card (especially off eBay). There are loads of fake ones out there. They even modify them to that they appear to be a larger capacity than they really are. So a 4GB card may show up as 8GB in windows, but when you go past 4GB of data it starts writing over stuff at the start. (Which would explain why your 450 songs became 280).

I got my SD card (and lots of other things) from play.com and have never had a problem
