Official 2.2 update impressions thread!

5. Battery life SUUUUUUUUUCKS. I had it fully charged and literally in an hour it was RED and almost dead. I charged it up, used it for 20 mins, and it was down to 80%!

My battery life hasn't declined that severely, but it has gotten worse. 2.1 was a tremendous improvement for battery life but 2.2 seems to have undone all of that. With 2.1 I could sit and listen to Pandora for an hour without making a dent. Now, not so much. :(

Just ran a speed test and, for some reason, my Wi-Fi connection appears to be 3-4 times as fast. The best the droid ever managed on my connection before was 3+Mbps, now I'm getting from 9 to in excess of 10Mbps. :D

I am HUGELY disappointed with this update.

1. Streaming audio is outright broken. Slacker and Pandora sound like @#$% sice the update. It appears that Android 2.2 no longer supports the AAC+ codec. This issue is also being reported by users of the HTC Evo and the Nexus One who received the update.

2. The new text messaging app is very cluttered compared to the old one. It's not necessary to have a picture next to every single message. The old format was much cleaner, and the Facebook status at the top was much more useful information than the recipient's phone number. The white backgrounds are rather annoying too, as they do not match the theme used throughout the rest of the OS.

3. There is no longer an easy way to select "silent mode" with the volume rocker. The Droid certainly is not "silent" when it vibrates. Who thought it would be a good idea to merge the vibrate and silent mode settings?

4. When you receive a text message from an unknown number and select "add to contact" from the menu, it does not actually transfer the phone number to the selected contact. VERY annoying.

These are issues I've noticed within the first hour of use. I have a feeling I'm going to find more major issues with this release.

I agree with number 3. I dont know why they would take away the feature of going from low volume to vibrate to silent.. now you have to go and turn vibrate off then go and make it silent.. seems like a step backward

Here's my thoughts so far, cons first:
  • "Alarm Clock" became just "Clock" and now it seems you have to go into the silly looking psuedo "dock" clock in order to even get to the alarm clock. I liked it better when I could set up a direct link to the alarm clock. Somehow my DigiClock Widget retained this link, but I can't create a driect link on my desktop.
  • Speaking of Dock: Don't like the new Dockscreen... With my current wallpaper it looks horrible and also I somehow turned on an audible signal when inserting/removing from dock and it is really a bad sound, but now I can't find where to uncheck it.
Now Pros:
  • Speed is definitely increased.
  • 5 homescreens with markers is better than 3 with none. Also if you long press the markers, you get a small preview of the homescreens.
  • Was able to move some apps to SDcard. I know this really is more a function of the individual apps, so now that D1 and EVO are getting 2.2, I expect the apps will be updated soon for this.
That's all I have seen so far, so we'll see what more comes to light. Overall I am happy with it.

My guess is that it's in reaction to all of the people complaining about accidentally hitting their volume button in their pocket or through regular use and turning their phone on silent.

That said, I wish they'd make it a toggleable option. I keep my phone on silent most of the time, but it's nice to be able to go from silent to vibrate through just a button-press.

Given the huge discrepancy in people's battery life, it must not be the update, so much as it is the new firmware causing some apps to endlessly loop some background functions and drain the battery for those that have them. I guess that is good news, assuming that the makers of these apps notice the problem and correct it.

Like UBR said, you'll start using it more - if you really want to. But it works perfectly fine since the last update - and Send to Phone for Firefox also works well with C2P

OK, Flash is still in beta. See http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/106331-so-where-can-i-get-official-flash-player.html

As for other missing apps, when I first went ot a FroYo leak, I had a similar issue -0 the next day when I was all set to complain about it - they were there.

Try waiting ~24 hours and seeing if they are still missing....

Ok, so I flashed this yesterday, apps still not on the market.. easy tether pro, LogMeIn app.. I put those 2 that way maybe someone else can check to see if it's just me or not.

When in the dock press the menu button and then select Dock Settings. You can uncheck the dock insertion sound. Mine wasn't selected when I updated so I had to play around a bit to find this.

I would think that too but I check running apps all the time and never have anything but the keyboard which always runs? All I can say is if it doesnt improve in a week I will request a new phone. I am on charge number 3 and it is dying as we speak. Also flash is horrible and does not work well at all! I do not get why anyone said it was cool? I was waiting for it forever and now it is so laggy! I can not even watch a youtube video on wifi with it because the frame rates are so bad ugh! Anyone else have this problem? Also I know that is not my battery problem because I only used flash for two times around 2 min each and won't again because of how bad it is but I will say I actually watched my battery meter fall two times while watching the 2 min video, sad!

I gotta believe that some of the problems people are having are related to loading a 2.2 ROM over a 2.1 ROM without any data wipe of any kind. I'll spell out what I mean for those who aren't rooted and don't have experience with loading custom ROMs.

When 2.2 was leaked, it was a well known fact that a Data wipe (factory restore) was HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to run 2.2 without issues if coming from 2.1. I personally wipe much more than just my Data partition (factory reset) when switching ROMs (even between 2.2 ROMs). All of the problems I am reading about I see everyday and my first question is "Did you wipe data prior to flashing this ROM?"

What's my point? If you are having serious performance problems after 1-2 days, go ahead and do a factory restore. You will still have 2.2 but you WILL LOSE ALL OF YOUR SETTINGS, CALL LOGS, ETC. Google will back up your apps from the market (both paid and free apps), contacts, Gmail calendar objects, etc.) but without an app like Titanium Backup (which requires Root Access), you will lose quite a bit.

Beats having a really slow phone though! :D

Can anyone confirm that the new 2.2 Voice Commands over Bluetooth are accessible by a headset when the device/screen is locked?

So for example: If the device is locked and in your pocket while driving, are voice commands available by just hitting the headset button without interacting with the phone?... or do you have to unlock the device first?

I believe I read that the Droid X's Motorola add-on voice command app is not accessible over bluetooth when screen is locked.

ROTATION! Or Lack thereof...

Well, here is another 2.2 problem I am having, this one is kinda bothering me. I am using a program, need it to rotate horizontally, I turn the phone, nothing happens. I shake the phone, nothing. Shake it again, finally the screen rotates. If I start some apps with the phone upright, the app opens sideways. I turn the phone sideways, turn it back upright, nothing. It takes several tries before the screen rotates properly. Im sick of having to move the phone all over the place if I need it to rotate. ANyone else see this issue with 2.2?

Definitely having this issue - my rotation just doesn't work anymore.

Honestly I think stock 2.1 was better than the current stock 2.2. Since I forced my update, my battery has been awful, it died in about 6 hours instead of the usual 14-16. I have used the current Kangerade ROM for 2.2 and it had way better battery life than what I had before, sometimes going a full day. Sadly I had to unroot, but will probably do it again. Another complaint is that my Droid seems a bit laggy. Unless the new build fixes some of those issues, I like the custom ROM 2.2s or stock 2.1 better.

Yes this works, I tried it this morning with the phone locked. Pressed the headset button and a voice menu came up, the screen did not turn on, told it to call a contact and it dialed with no problems.
