Need a better to do list

Hi Folks.

I'm switching from an old Palm device to my new HTC Incredible and I need a to do list. But none of the ones I've seen work the way that I think a to do list should. They seem to treat to dos just like calendar events, but I already have a calendar app. Here's what I'd like for to dos:

1. Some to dos don't need a date or time. Just something to get around to whenever I get the chance. "Get cereal at the supermarket" means that the next time I go to the supermarket, I should buy cereal, even if I don't know on what day I'll get to the supermarket.

2. To dos with dates should show up in my calendar, but not necessarily at specific times. "Get the car washed on Saturday" means that I'd like to get the car washed on Saturday, but not at any particular time. If I had a specific time for a car wash, I'd simply make it a calendar event and wouldn't need a to do list at all.

3. This one is really important. If I don't get the car washed on Saturday, the car still needs washing, so I want this to stay on my calendar until I check it off as done.

Anything like that out there?

Might I suggest Note Everything? I use Note Everything Pro because I found I can't live without my to do lists and the options Note Everything gives are innumerable.

You can make textnotes, paintnotes (yes draw your todo list or a quick note), voicenotes, photonotes, checklists (cannot live without), durable checklists, gallerynotes, notes from a barcode and notes from google docs. I didn't realise till just now how long that really feels lol.
Ok so I make a note or list. I have options to send my note to calendar, barcode, or google docs. I can also add reminders, or (my fave!!!) sticky the note/list in my notification bar

. Even make a shortcut on your homescreen for it.
The widget allows you to make notes on the fly in a small unobtrusive widget.

I sound like a salesman probably but I'm so anal about checklists and todos. I hope you'll check it out.

I came from Palm as well, so I feel your pain. I found an app that uses the same options that Palm offered, especially I terms of repeating the tasks. Check out ToDo Task Manager. I had emailed the developer about getting it to work like Palm did and he was quite agreeable in getting it done. I don't believe the tasks will integrate work your calender though.

I also come from Palm, so I've set it up with folders for my old Categories. Plus, I've got two desktop shortcuts that create a new (text/voice) note in my "Inbox" folder.

Just the basics, excellently.

I used to use the Sony Clie (palm powered) as a PIM (personal information manager), so I know what you are talking about.

My 2 apps of choice are Springpad and Jorte. Jorte syncs up with my Google calendar flawlessly.

For notes, my preference is Springpad, and you can assign dates and ignore the start and end time if you want. What's also cool is that it syncs up on the web (for free) so my notes are backed-up online. I can also enter notes online and they will sync with my Evo.

I like Astrid for to-do lists. You can put items on your list and choose whether you want to add a calendar event for them. I like using it for recurring tasks like weekly trash day. You can set up the recurring event and hide it until you want it to show up on your list. For trash day, I have it set for Tuesday evenings and after I check it off that it's done, the item is hidden from my master list until the following Tuesday. That way my ongoing list isn't cluttered with those periodic events.

I used Astrid for a while, but I had to cut ties with it as it's very restrictive in the options for recurring tasks; you're shoehorned into daily/ weekly/ monthly, when I've got things that repeat every Monday and Thursday which aren't options in Astrid without making a task for each day (which then each have to repeat weekly and you hope you don't forget to update all of them if something changes).

Has anyone compared Note Everything to Evernote?

I'm particularly interested in a good To-Do list also. It's gotta be customizable and able to sync with a desktop in some manner.

I've actually been using Google Docs pretty happily for a while now. My only complaints are that it's slow and clunky on android, esp. the edit features.

hmm. I just put up a post looking for a task list or todo list or reminder list, but I would like it to show on my home screen, so I know to remember to get milk on the way home. Any ideas on this? Sorry to be hijacking, I think I am just asking for a variant. I am coming from palm to bb to winmo to droid.

This Todo Task Manager sounds like it may solve my need to prepare for the demise of my Palm and use only the Droid Incredible before the Palm actually passes on to the museums. One question. Are you able to create to do items on the computer, or are you forced to do all on the phone?

As it stands right now, phone only. I emailed the Dev with, who couldn't be more attentive, about this exact question he said that at some indeterminate point he plans on having the app work with a website (which I assume would fix that issue)

I personally enjoy the To Do List Widget by Chris Bailey (free/market). It can be placed on your screen in a large number of sizes and allows you to put a title on each list, enter stuff to do, place a check mark adjacent to each item once completed. I have a To Do and a Shopping List on one screen. It isnt fancy as some of the others but it does a fine job at listing things to do.

Any luck in finding the todo list with your requirements? I really like Evernote. It's features are many. The key feature is like is that I can sync Evernote - desktop/web/android. It has a checklist feature but you have to click the feature for every item you want to enter - tedious. Maybe I'm just missing additional steps.
Note everything is great but the desktop sync is a deal breaker for me. I'd be interested if you've found anything. I used to use Ilium's Listpro - awesome product but they don't have an android version.

I also use Springpad and love it. The best thing is the sync with the website, so I can add items at home on the computer and it's automatically added on my phone.

You can create different notebooks and many types of notes, so it may be worth a try.

I am actually going to check ALL of these suggestions out.
I am using gTasks (the one that syncs) and it's so-so. I use my calendar for alot of tasks.
Which of these apps syncs with an account and/or lets you enter via desktop?

Evernote is awesome, but it is not really a ToDo app (although it has some of that functionality built in). It is more a cloud-based file cabinet for storing EVERYTHING in your life.

For simple to-do, I use GTask (free), which does not have a lot of functionality, but has the awesome benefit of syncing with your Google Tasks, so you can create your lists online while in GMail (conveniently located) and they show up on your phone, and vice-versa. And, I hear they are going to be "beefing" up the Google Tasks pretty soon, offering a lot of the features requested here (and you can imagine how well they can integrate it with Google Calendar).

Based on some quick research, it sounds like Evernote and Springpad are very comparable. Evernote uses a windows program if you want, while springpad uses the web for desktop entry. Both are cloud-based so changing/adding items anywhere will be reflected on every device. Both are actually much more than simple to-do apps, but that's something I was looking for.

I have four separate notebooks: Misc Information, Shopping, Media To Check Out (for a song or movie I want to find) and To Do.

Within each of those notebooks I have sub-catagories... for example under Media to Check Out I have Movies and Music, both of which are checklists.

Under "To Do" I create tasks which can have due dates, reminders, tags, etc.

Under something like shopping lists, you can toggle privacy so it is accessible by your "friends". Therefore, you can create a shopping list that can be checked by a family member if they happen to be at the store.

Other types of lists are contacts, businesses, books, wine, etc etc. It really is all-encompassing, yet using notebooks you can keep it very simple.

The Android app allows you to add photos, audio notes, scan barcodes, and search nearby (so if you're in a restaurant you want to return to, just hit that button, find the name, and it saves all the information.

I chose springpad and I am both loving it and overwhelmed.
It will take some time and tip reading to be fluid with it.
I am loving building these lists though.

I use cloudlist. I don't think you can use it with the calendar, but it is simple, free and works for me.
