Android 2.2 [Froyo] Bugs and Questions - Post em Here

Just registered today so that I could chime in. New SmartPhone user, New Droid user (less than 30 days), Not a major geek, but most times I get it. :)

Did the manual update from the link and instructions provided here. Did not do a factory reset before beginning. Process went smooth, also learned how to install an .apk with Astro.

Phone acted like it took a beating on the battery yesterday after the update, but I was playing with it all afternoon. I let the battery run all the way down overnight and let the phone shut off. Put it on the charger for 3hrs. this a.m. and it's 100% charged. I'll report back on today's performance using the phone as I normally do.

Yeah, so far I feel all the battery concerns were blown out of proportion (including myself).

It seems the download/applying OTA update takes alot of resources. I typical usage on a full charge and so far at 80% battery, which seems better than my typical 2.1 battery usage. Will report back later in the evening if I have a better picture of whats happening.

Has anyone had any issues with the auto-brightness since updating to 2.2? I'm noticing that the screen has no problem going from dark to bright, but it doesn't go from bright to dark. The only way to fix this is to lock the phone and open it again.
The only other issue I've noticed since upgrading is that certain apps open up in landscape mode, when I'm clearly holding the phone in portrait mode. Doesn't really bug me though.

2. The new text messaging app is very cluttered compared to the old one. It's not necessary to have a picture next to every single message. The old format was much cleaner, and the Facebook status at the top was much more useful information than the recipient's phone number. The white backgrounds are rather annoying too, as they do not match the theme used throughout the rest of the OS.

I completely agree, I want my messaging to look cleaner, 1 picture at the top of who the txt message is more than enough, no need to have it at every message, i can read the name...

3. There is no longer an easy way to select "silent mode" with the volume rocker. The Droid certainly is not "silent" when it vibrates. Who thought it would be a good idea to merge the vibrate and silent mode settings?

This is driving me insane - everything else that I don't like about FroYo is Eh, but this takes the cake. I like having a vibrate mode (when I'm at the movies, at work, etc.) when I need to know if I have an incoming call to check if its important. But I also need a silent mode for when I'm having a txt convo for an extended period of time and dont want my phone vibrating every 20 seconds for 5 minutes. There has to be a way to fix this, worst idea EVER. I read johnlgalt's post. It kind of confirmed that there is no way.

Another thing, I've noticed the screen now flips the other way horizontally, not just towards the keyboard... While I can see how this can be useful - I don't like it, any way to turn it off?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

not sure about the screen orintation, but for the vibrate, you can set it to always on, or just while it is in silent mode in the settings.

Can someone please post the build number and kernel version? I downloaded 2.2 from the Google link, and I don't have vibrate on my phone anymore without configuring a ton of options, and my corporate calendar does not work but my corporate email does. (Referencing the same problem above, there is no way to have all 3 modes (ring + vib, vib, silent) in the same motion.

My version info:
Kernel: 2.6.32.9-g103d848
Build: FRG01b

And question2: Will the OTA update if it is newer replace this, or do I need to wipe back to 2.1 first?

I use my News & Weather widget every morning. Now when I click on a news article, it opens directly in my browser like a normal web page instead of in the "magnified" news browser window. This sucks, I can't see anything without zooming in and it doesn't format the article to the window size anymore. Anyone else seeing this?

I noticed that too this morning. I check it every morning too and now it's just a pain in the ass.

Also don't like how even after I use the browser and clear cache, history, and cookies when I'm done, I open browser back up and it reopens the last page and refreshes it. Even after force closing the browser or rebooting it does this.

Also, Visual Voice Mail is constantly opening. Hate that stupid thing. Can't uninstall either without rooting and not sure if I want to take that plunge yet. Maybe after 2.2 is rooted and tested and proven.

Would also like to know how people are tethering for free. A couple people who have mentioned it are actually paying for the service while others don't say.

Is there someone who isn't paying for tethering actually being able to use it without getting that page from VZW telling you to pay?

I had battery issues yesterday. My phone still gets hot, but not like it did yesterday. I'm hoping with some of the changes I've made (Exchange email push and other "tweaks") that the battery life will get better. I took my phone off the charger last night at 7:00 p.m. and did have to put it on the charger until 8:00 a.m. today

I also noticed that my data usage sky-rocketed in the last two days. Not sure what app(s) could be sucking up all that data, but will keep an eye on that as well!

Update - So, my phone has started acting up again. It's getting hot and it won't keep a charge. I will try deleting the ATK app. Also, I've logged out of the new Facebook app as others have suggested. I may have to go to Verizon tomorrow to see what they say. If no one can fix this for me, I may have to root with Sapphire!

^ hey i think i may have a solution for you. this goes as well for others too. if you have a task killer.

like many others i have experienced battery issues. battery life has gone down considerably and i had no idea why. after finally listening to those who advised me to uninstall my task killer, froyo has been way better.

the ATK, really does suck the life out of our batteries. phones been off charger for 7hours, been downloading tons of stuff, figuring out little tweaks and im only down to 80%. if anything i feel battery life has improved.

so really do uninstall your task killer like everyone's been saying. froyo will taste that much better

I own the HTC Evo and am new in here. Today, I just downloaded the update Android 2.2, but noticed that some of my apps (i.e., Better Keyboard etc) no longer work (and in that keyboard case with BK - I can type with it, but it makes the sounds.. but no letters show up in a browser or anywhere. Other apps also produce zero). What's up with that? Is there a way that I can reinstall the Android 2.2 again or should I just call Sprint tier 2 tech support.. or perhaps, with time. all the apps will be updated or work again??????? Asking for help please.

Mine behaves the way it used to with the Ringer Toggle Widget I use from the market. I can switch from ringer on/vibrate/silent and it behaves as expected. Vibrates on vibrate mode and is silent on silent mode.

Edit - Vibrate in Sound settings is Always. It maybe has to be like this for the ringer toggle widget to work like I stated above.

I was hoping to continue to be able to do it with the volume rocker on the phone... but thanks, this is a temporary fix until Google gets their SH!T together and fixes this, stupidest move yet. Because now that volume rocker is 100% useless.

I love the new orientation that is something I wanted from the get go. I just now found out it does that from a few posts ago. Why aren't things like that in the changes information. We need to make a comprehensive list of things that changed since no one ever tells you everything.

Actually, that is on their most recent, unreleased PDF about the changes in 2.2 that showed up on the web. I don't recall if it's on the older one.

Hey,

I have the same issue with data usage. It's insane. I used to have a maximum of 5-6MB a day, and now it's 20MB or more. I see megs of data just flowing down with for no apparent reason and I don't know what's causing it.
I have a 500MB plan so this could mean trouble fast!

Can anyone suggest an app that can show me data usage detailed by app by app?

I have all kinds of data usage monitors, but they just show data going in and out. It drives me crazy to see all that data transfer and not knowing what it's actually for...

Please Help!

Thanks

I'm the opposite. I HATED having to use the volume rocker to do it. One, it takes more time to do it. And two, I don't like that it makes the volume raising sound as you go from silent/vibrate to loud. I find the toggle easier/quicker, really only if it's on your home screen though.

I agree, except there's 2 problems with that:
1. thats a space on my home screen that I have to waste on that toggle
2. what if I'm not on the home screen? I could be in an app, and before the app, was not on the main home screen, it would take 2 home presses before even getting to the widget. The rocker will work whenever as long as you're not in navigation or listening to music....

and if you're setting it to loud, you probably shouldn't mind the volume raising sound, esp since you only hear it once if you hold down the rocker, it only beeps when you let go.

We'll agree to disagree :D

I've blogged about it elsewhere, but it bears repeating. I was one of the users impacted by what's turned out to be a very buggy FRG01B.

By item:

  • Apparent speed of the device itself seems slower. I've not timed it, and this may be more psychological than anything as I grow more frustrated. However, it does feel a bit laggy. Keep in mind that in order to create as fast a response as possible, I long ago disabled all of the device's transition effects (it doesn't look as pretty, but it's fast).

  • I've got a 20MB pipe that runs a server, 1-3 laptops, and a variety of handheld devices as my daughters come in and out of the house. I routinely get 1.5MB torrent downloads for new HD Doctor Who episodes. My bandwidth is fine.

As of yesterday's force to FRG01B, the networking (wifi seems worst) has been at best slow. At least 25% of the time, it fails entirely.

  • YouTube is useless. I assume that because of the fouled network connection, the player simply times out on the stream.

  • The Gallery lags badly. I assume this is because of the fouled network connection attempting to load Picasa albums and ultimately failing.

  • Any app (and they are legion) that needs a good Internet connection is now unstable. Because the device can't get decent network connectivity, timeouts are reached and the apps tend to fail.

  • I play "Trap!" -- an addictive little game involving bouncing balls on the screen. The interesting thing about this app is that it's one of the few affected by the 2D graphics bug introduced in the 2.1 upgrade.

If anything, the performance of "Trap!" is worse under FRG01B than under 2.1.

To be a bit more scientific, I downloaded the LagTest app to check results, and it seems to show that the 2D bug may have been resolved.

It's unclear, then, what might be causing "Trap!" to lag.

  • Flash simply sucks. There's no other way to say it. I tried playing Falling Girl, one of the oldest, simplest Flash games out there. The girl falls slow as molasses in January. Really. Jagged, slow-motion falling. The simple control of click-and-hold doesn't translate into press-and-hold on the handheld. There's no way to interact with the game.

Even if you did, it's so laggy as to be pointless. This may be due in part to network connectivity issues, at least with respect to streaming Flash videos. But Falling Girl is so simple that it ought to load very quickly with no further streaming. It shouldn't be so pointlessly slow.

  • Some users have reported difficulty playing local media. I've not experienced any problems, but I use Meridian rather than the stock media players. I've watched Star Wars and listened to lengthy playlists without interruption

If the FRG22 update resolves these problems, then Verizon/Motorola/Google needs to get it into the wild ASAP. If there's an FRG22 that's been pushed to some users as reported, we need that file right the frak away.

I agree with what's been stated before: if you get the upgrade notice, don't upgrade immediately. You need to have Debugging enabled and get your Droid plugged into a computer and the upgrade file saved off of it first. Once you've got that, it can be released to ... well, people like me. :D

Anyone having problems with launcher pro. After the manual update, I cannot get it to stick. Every time I hit the home button it goes back. I have tried home switcher and that did not work either. I really liked the dock and the ability to add stuff to it. Frankly, I am not impressed with the froyo dock and the three buttons.

Also, my manual update went fine, thanks to the instructions on this forum. I have had few issues other than the some nervousness and two reboots with a battery pull. Had to uninstall the virus protection. Have had a few times that my battery got sucked down fast for unknown reason.
